Obituary printed in the Iola Register, 11/9/2002. Russell Eugene "Gene" McHenry, 74, died Saturday, Nov. 2, in Bella Vista, Ark. He was born May 10, 1928, in Iola, the son of Russell E. and Ruth E. Lam McHenry. He was a Merchant Marine and later joined the U.S. Navy, retiring after 23 years of service as chief machinist mate. Following his retirement from the Navy he was employed by San Diego Gas & Power Co. He was married to Sersuko Ito in 1967 in Japan. She is deceased. The McHenry family moved to Clinton, Mo., where he worked for the Kansas City Power & Light Co. at the Montrose station. They later moved to Appleton City, Mo. He started the fifth and sixth grade little league football program sponsored by the Appleton City Optimist Club in 1978 and coached until 1997. He also was active in the Optimist's baseball and softball program. He had coached and traveled with his son, Terry, to motocross races. He was a member of the Appleton City Council from 1994 through 1996 serving as mayor protem for part of his term. McHenry was a member of the Appleton City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 11242 and Masonic Lodge No. 412 A.F. & A.M, York and Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Ararat Shrine. He liked to travel, collect donations for the circus and perform in parades for the Shrine. He earned more than 20 Crown Jewels through his service. In April 2002 he was presented a citation of honor for distinguished service to the Shriners. He is survived by a son, Daniel Eugene of Chula Vista, Calif.; two sisters, Janice and her husband, Paul Smith, of Bella Vista, and Donna and her husband, Art Conway, of Amarillo, Texas; two grandchildren; and four nephews and nieces. Two sons, Toshi and Terrence Eugene, died earlier. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Hill & Son Funeral Home in Appleton City. Masonic services were by the Appleton City Lodge No. 412 A.F. & A.M. The Legion of Honor Rose Ceremony was by the Ararat Shrine Service. The Revs. John Ketcher and Frank Claiborne officiated. Interment was in the Appleton City Cemetery. Military graveside services were by the Appleton City VFW Post No. 11242. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Hospice, 1200 W. Walnut St., Rogers, Ark. 72756 or Shriners Hospitals for Children. |

from the Iola Register, 11-Feb-2003 Christena CornerFormer rural Humboldt resident Christena Corner, 83, of Topeka died Friday, Feb. 7, at a Topeka care center.She was born April 5, 1919, near Humboldt, to Fred L. and Inez Wamsley Dice. She was a 1938 graduate of Humboldt High School. She worked for Gessler Drugs West in Wichita for 14 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Phoenix Chapter 159 in Wellington and E.R.C. Resource and Referral. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Wichita. She lived in Wellington 1945-1955 and Wichita 1955-1994 before moving to Topeka. On June 6, 1938, she married Walter T. Thurman in Yates Center. He died in 1964. On Oct. 13, 1975, she married Howard E. Corner. He died in 1993. She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Cory of Topeka and Carmen Lamberson of Ridgway, Colo.; a son, Leland R. Thurman of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Virginia Collison of Humboldt and Joan Sallee of Iola; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel in Topeka. The body will be cremated. Private inurnment services are planned. Memorials to Meals on Wheels may be sent in care of Stormont Vail Hospital, 1500 S.W. 10th or to the Marian Clinic, 1001 S.W. Garfield, both in Topeka, KS. 66604. |

Extracted from the Iola Register, Monday, February 10, 2003 Anita BensonAnita B. Benson of Iola died Saturday, Feb. 8, at Windsor Place at age 102.She was born Oct. 12, 1900, on a farm 2 1/2 miles north of Iola, the daughter of Harry N. and Lena Odland Brown. The family moved to Iola when she was 5 years old. She attended Iola schools and was graduated from Iola High School in 1919. She attended summer school studying piano at the Bush Conservatory in Chicago, Ill. She later attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, where she met Laurence J. Benson. They were married in 1922 and moved to Chicago where they lived for 15 years. The couple then moved to California where she did secretarial work at 20th Century Fox for 10 years. He died in 1970. She returned to Iola in 1979. She was a member of Santa Monica Bay Women's Club and Wesley United Methodist Church and Dirt Diggers Garden Club in Iola. She is survived by three nieces, Mary Ann Mann of Iola, Peggy Osborn of Kansas City and Betty Renier of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a nephew, Clifton Brown of Sun City, Ariz. A daughter, Barbara, sister, Clara Smith and brother, Mont Brown, died earlier. Graveside services were this afternoon at Highland Cemetery. The Rev. Lance Bailey officiated at the services. Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels were in charge of arrangements. |
