Her husband Richard Freeman "Freem" Wood, son of Albert Wesley Henry and Nancy Dunten, was born in Huntertown, Allen County, Indiana on February 24, 1840. He was 55 years old at the beginning of the journal. Malissa, born in Morgan County, Ohio on December 8, 1845, was the daughter of Samuel Teter and Mary Ann Kuntz. They were married on July 4, 1864 perhaps in Iowa. All of their sons were born while they were living in Carroll County, Iowa. An Anderson County Deed shows that they were already living in Anderson County in 1885 when Malissa Wood purchased 160 acres in Anderson County from W. F. and Marilla B. Minchen of Carroll County Iowa for the price of $1600. The property is described as the southwest quarter of Section fifteen in Township twenty one North Range nineteen. Freeman, Malissa and George were still living in Anderson County in 1900, but by 1909 had moved to Lincoln Township in Kiowa County, Kansas. They were living in Pratt County, Kansas at the time of their deaths: Lissy on June 4, 1918 and Freeman on November 23, 1919. They are buried in Pleasant Plaines Cemetery in Pratt County, Kansas. Their children were: SAMUEL ALBERT "ALLEY" WOOD, b. August 25, 1869, Iowa; d. March 30, 1893, Missouri; m. MAGGIE LIGHT, September 10, 1891. When Alley became ill, his father went to Missouri to be with him. He was there at the time of his death and brought his body back to Anderson County for burial in Burch Cemetery. WILLIAM THEOBAULT "WALT" WOOD, b. May 05, 1872, Carroll City, Iowa; d. January15, 1948, DeQuincy, LA; m.MARY MAUD READSHAW, February 03, 1897, Anderson Co., Kansas; b. January 28, 1878, Indiana; d. September 10, 1980,DeQuincy, LA. In 1900 Walt and Maude were in Iuka, Pratt County, KS with two young daughters. By 1910 they were in Meade County, KS. In 1914 Walt moved is family to DeQuincy, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. JOHN MARK WOOD, b. November 01, 1873, Iowa; m. LILLIE SIMPSON, February 16, 1899; b. May 1877, KS. In 1900 they were living in Pratt County, KS. LEVI SANFORD WOOD, b. August 15, 1875, Iowa; d. March 14, 1962, Iuka, KS; m. LUCY FLETCHER, March 25, 1900; b. March 1882, KS. In 1900 they were counted on the Pratt County, KS census, in 1910 were in Edwards County and in 1920 were in Appleton Township of Clark County, KS. FREEMAN ELMER WOOD, b. December 11, 1878, Carroll Co. Iowa; d. August 26, 1956, Pratt Co. KS; m. (1) JANE ELIZABETH SHAW, September 03, 1902, Garnett, Anderson Co. KS; b. Abt. 1880, of Welda, Anderson Co. KS; d. March 30, 1907, Pratt Co. KS; m. (2) ETHEL LAURA LIBBY, February 27, 1910, Cullison, Pratt Co. KS; b. April 17, 1883, Sedgwick Co KS; d. July 11, 1966, Pratt, Pratt Co KS. He is buried in Pleasant Plains Cemetery in Pratt County, KS. GEORGE T. WOOD, b. October 03, 1882; d. Aft. 1956; m. JENNIE MARGARET SPEAKER, August 04, 1909. In 1920 he was living in Lincoln Township, Kiowa Co. KS with his wife and their sever year old daughter, Ester Mae. Saturday, January 19, 1916 I have recopied this all from an old tablet an it was pretty well to pieces an I reckon I have made some mistakes. Can't see very well an have done the best I could. Who ever gets it may have to put their studying cap on. Commenced this last week to recopy an finished to day. May eyes are tired. Benn cold an stormy and could not do very much. Not got very much to do now any way. All ice an snow out doors. Will have to clean the hen house soon as the weather gets good. I was born in 1845, the 8 of Dec. 70 years old last month. February 1895 13th Real chily this morn. The day pretty fair in forenoon. After noon some cloudy and snowy just a little. Freem an I went to town with Mr. and Mrs Crouse. Near 5 clock when we got back 14th Some cloudy an chily. I washed, carried in snow an wood. Carried water too an could hardly walk. Freeman went to Ida after the mail. I got a letter from Rose an Mrs. Fritz in Iowa. An Geo got one from his cousin Cora Wood in Indiana. 15th Chily but thawed a little this after noon. Freem in the house. Got a bad cold. Geo went home with Art Smith from school this even. John an Sanford gone to Fairview to Literary this eve. Sat. 16th Not very cold. Killed a pig. Then John went to Garnett. Walt come 3 clock. Sun. 17th Very stormy looking this Morn. Tried to rain a n sleet just a little. Walt went home after dinner or rather to the place he tended. Elmer an I went out to see Mrs. Wilson. She is sick. 18th Very stormy looking again this morn. Freem went to Garnett. Roads very slipery an snow all gone only the big drifts. Sanford some home before school was quite out with the headache. John went to Elmer Hentons yesterday bout____. He got back after dark. No place sure yet. Tues. 19th This morn he went to Cars to help husk shock corn. He left school last Friday. We all went to Literary but John and Sanford. Sanford did not go to school today. Guess he won't go any more. He don't want to. Walt went back after dinner to day. John come home this eve. He forgot to take his mittens. Not very cold this eve a little freezing. Fri. 22nd Sanford an I went out to Walts place. We started early and when we got there Walt was in the field husking corn. Sanford went out to help him and soon after, Mr. Furgeson an the Constable come an several others and served papers on Walt for $195 damage. They just done it to scare him to get all he had. Got him to go to Colony an then they took all his grain an rough feed in their Possession. Sanford and I come home. Then Sanford went back a horseback. An after dark Walt and him both come back. Sat. 23rd Sanford went this morn to tell Geo Herford bout their trouble. Geo was not up yet. He got up an started to the place. Sanford went with him. Freem and Walt went too. They got their 1st. They went to see Furgeson. He would not give up, but sent teams in Walts field to husk out Walts corn. Walt Freem and Geo Herford came back an left Sanford there to husk corn. Then after dinner the three of them, Freem, Walt and Geo went to Garnett to see a Lawyer. Then Walt an Geo went to Colony where the Justice and Freem come home. Walt got back 10 clock or a bout that. We was all in bed when he come. Sun 24th This morn Walt went to Herfords. Him and Geo come back for dinner. Elmer and our Geo went to see Roy Doll. He is bad with Eryhyplas in his leg. The boys all home for dinner. After dinner Geo Herford went home. Mon. 25th Walt an Freem went to Garnett this morn early. They got back at 11 clock. They went to see a Lawyer Bowman. After dinner Walt went back to his place. Sanford went out there early this morn to husk corn and see what they was a doing. John came home from Gars Sat. noon, went back this morn to his work. He is helping Car husk corn. None of us from here went to Literary. Tis rainy an rather misty and very dark. Thurs 28 Been cloudy some mist an rainy. Just enough to make it mudy. Last Tues. Walt an Sanford come back. They brought 2 loads of machinery an truck from Walts, an yesterday went back an got another load an brought the cattle an horses. To day Sanford an I went an brought his house truck. An Walt went to Garnett an Bowman has give his suit and Walt has been beat out of a bout 200 dol feed an damage. They scared him to give up all his grain for damage. When there was some mans cattle destroyed a bout 20 acres of corn for Walt. An the old devil took that plan to beat Walt out of it. March Fri. 1st Walt over to Joe Slutz to help him trim apple trees, very pleasant. Sat. 2nd Pleasant. Little chilly this morn. Walt went back to Slutz to help on the Orchard. John come home fro Cars yesterday. Sun. 3rd Chily this morn early then the sun shined warn till about 2 clock. The wind raised in the North an grew colder all day an blowed very hard. John went to Elmer Fentons after dinner to work. Mon. 4th Real cold this morn. Ice on the Windows tho went off before noon. Mr. Wilson an Wife come to spend the day. Mr. Simpson and Edd called this morn and Mr. Brocklesby called this morn. Walt an Sanford halled hay this fore noon. After noon halled wood. Is now 11 clock an we all went to Literary this eve. Tues 5th Some chilly this. I went to Garnett with Mrs. And Mr. Crouse. Got back at 3 clock. Eggs 15, butter 12 ct lb. Weds 6th Walt an Sanford broke stock here at home this forenoon. After noon at Joe Slutz. Thurs 7th Freem and Sanford plowing. Walt went this morn to help a man make a pond. He is not home yet. Sanford an Elmer went to Fairview to Literary. Geo went to Hiatt to singing school. He went a lone. Sat 9th Walt a Joes place to work. Sun. 10th Very windy and chily. Elmer, I an Geo went to West Phalia to see Henry Andrews an family. He had moved 1 mile out of town. We found them well. Walt was not home last night. Mon. 11th Cloudy tho not so chily as yesterday. Simpson an Edd called last eve to stay all night. They started for home this morn. Tues 12 Cloudy all day and tried to rain a little by spells. After noon Sanford plowing. Walt at Joes place plowing. He was home last night and we all went to Hiatt Literary. Elmer an Geo at school. Freem an Jim Colins went to Garnet stayed all day. Web 13th Windy an cold. Been getting colder all day an this after noon tried to rain. This eve trying to snow. Freem at Jims at Garnett to day again. Freem there to witness Jim an Collier an Kent in a suit. Went against Colliers over $100 cost. Thurs. 14th Cold this morn. Some ice on the windows. Did not snow but little trying to snow now. This morn Freem, Walt and Joe Slutz went to H______ sale. Walt come this morn. Joe, him an Sanford plowed all day yesterday. Cold as it was Sanford went to Garnett to day. Fri. 15th Walt went back to Joes after the sale. An after a late dinner then come home. This morning him and Sanford halled manure to day the boys all went to singing school this eve. Sat 16th Walt an Freem went a hunting this fore noon. Got nothing. After dinner Walt went over to his place to tend his horse. John came this eve. Sun 17th Boys all here for dinner. Fred Clark come this morn. He lives in Argentine, Kans. John went back to his place to work. Mon. 18th Quite pleasant. Freem and I went to Garnett. Crouse and wife went a long. I took 9 lbs butter, 15 doz eggs, I doz hens. I got 3 pair cuff buttons, 3 collar buttons for 90 cts. Got me a pair of good shos for 89 cts. An groceries. Freem got him a nice suit of Clothes for 9 dollars. We got 3 sacks of flour. Sanford sewing oats all day. Tues 19th Raining this morning when we got up an rained all day. Bout noon it looked like it would stop and Walt went home to get his team to help plow in oats. An it soon begin to rain an he did not come back. Between 4 an 5 clock it begin to snow an snowed hard as it could. Was snowing an drifting hard when we went to bed. I think full as much fell as the big snow of this winter only it was wet and packed more firm. Weds 20th Quite big drifts this morn. The snow was from the North last and the house on those 2 sides was covered with snow. Looked so nice I would like to a had a picture taken. Walt did not come today. We looked for him all day. Elmer an Geo did not go to school yesterday. Teacher went. No one there all day. Elmer an Geo went today an no scholars there but them. We washed a 3 weeks wash to day and moped. The snow went off very fast today. Fri. 22nd The snow will be near all gone today. Got a letter from my Niece yesterday Kate. Bro. Harveys girl. They live in Cae (?) She was a little girl when I see her last. She was married Nov the 3rd 18_9. Her man's name is Stonebreaker. Walt come Thurs. to help hall hay. He has been helping to day to hall hay for his ______? April Tues. 23rd Cool this morn. Day warm. Sanford and Elmer plowing. Geo hearding yesterday and to day on the 80 south. Joe Slutz come near noon and got some oats. Geo hoed some in garden this eve and yesterday eve. Tis all ready for work. Freem fisting up the grape vines and sharpening posts yesterday and today. Baked the 1st pie plant pie and cooked the 1st spare gr_ss this spring, today. Thurs 25th Cool this morn. Hot in day. After noon Geo and I went down to the grave yd to plant some flower seed on Allys grave. I panted some here at home on the south side. Freem went to Joe Slutz sale this after noon. This after noon looked like storm. Fri. 26th Planted some more flower seed this morn an this after noon Freem an I went to Mt. Ida. Quite warm and dusty and getting dry. Need rain bad. Sat. 27th Planted corn a little while this afternoon. Walt come this eve. Sun 28 John come this morn bout day light. He was to a dance last eve and drove 15 miles home this morn. He went down to see Ballard Collins. He is very sick an has been since the 14th of March. His horse has cut up all day and went off this eve on the run. Frank Sumers and Sanford went to Fairview to church this after noon an to night went to Washing school house. A lady talked. Tues. 30th Finished planting corn here at home an commenced plowing on the south 80. Freem and Sanford took Jims planter home this after noon. I went over to straighten up for Walt and then went to Mr. Collins stayed till eve. Ballard is some better. I took Walt's old dun horse and Sanfords cart. Yesterday afternoon gray fan had her mule colt. May May 1st Took the heater down an straightened things in the room somewhat different. Churned 2 times and moped and a number of other things. This eve Charley horse is sick and Sanford went to Mout Ida to get some medicine. Freem an Elmer halled old hay all day. Filled up some washouts in the field and mulched the grapes. Thurs. 2nd Elmer and Geo halled mire out of the barn this forenoon. This after noon Elmer and I went to Garnett. Elmer got him 2 hats, wool an straw and neck tie. $1.21 for all. Fri. the 3rd Working on the south 80 fixing to plant corn. This after noon Freem went to Ida. Bout 3 clock it come up a hard rain. Wind blowed very hard and hailed some. The boys all over to the 80 an was out in the worse part. Freem got far as Jim Collins an stayed till the hardest was over. Alt Vanscoy got here just in the worst of it. 2 cattle men was out in it all with 72 head cattle in the timber at Kents ford. They stayed here all night. Sat the 4th Rained real hard last night. The ground is soaked full now. Bout noon begin to rain easy and rained till bout 3 clock. Ben a cattle man stoped in here out of rain for dinner. We washed for everything was full of water. An so many wet clothes hung them out. Did not get dry. Sun the 5th Walts Birth day. John come home last eve. He went back this eve. The boys went to Fairview to Church. Sanford rode coach horse. The 1st time any one was on his back. They hitched him up this morn, drove him down through the place. Found 7 young wolves. Sat the 11th This afternoon Dug come after a load of hay. Freem and Sanford went a long to the 80 to get a load for us an they burnt off the 80. Sun the 12th Walt come bout noon. Him and Sanford went to Jim Collins. Mr. Swartz called this morn to get the clock. Clock Elmer found Yesterday. Walt went back after supper. John did not come this week. I an Freem went down to the Branch. I picked 1 gal gooseberries. The 1st this year. Some traveling Dr in Mont Ida the last two weeks. They have a concert every night every other night free. Milford Cunningham called this eve to get Freem to help fix the grave yd fense tomorrow afternoon. This morning a light front nothing hurt here. Mon the 13th Walt come at noon. Elmer dragging corn. The rest fixing pasture fense. Some windy and real chily till noon. Tues the 14th Real chilly this morn and near all day. Elmer dragging corn. The rest in the fense business. Geo helping me yesterday and today. The cattle in the north pasture. Walt went home this eve to see bout his horses. Quite chily for a week at nights. Walt and Sanford went to Welda last eve to a concert. Just when they got back home. Wed 15th Pleasant. John Drumton (?) was married to day. Thurs. 16th Cloudy all day an seemingly cold enough to snow. Walt and Sanford commenced to break out some more on the south 80 this after noon just to try starting with one team. We all went to Welda last eve to a Dr. concert. Fri the 17th Walt went home this morn to drag corn to day and tomorrow. Sun 19th John come home to day. Stayed till evening. Walt went to the concert last eve and come home this morn. Stayed at Joes place last eve. Henry Andrews an family come last and Henrys brother come last eve. Stayed till 4 clock this eve. Elmer and I went yesterday afternoon to pick gooseberries. We got 3 ® gal the second picking this year. Freem went to Garnett yesterday. Tues 21st Quit chily this morn near frost. This week 2 light frosts wiped the beans and the cucumber vines. Freem and Walt went to Ida yesterday. Got back at noon, then Walt went home to drag his corn. Sanford went fore noon to Lafe Walkings to get the scraper. Then in the after noon they fixed the north pond. Elmer dragon corn yesterday and today. Sanford breaking on the south 80 today. Freem making posts. I canned 5 quts of gooseberries, from the 3 ® gal Elmer and I picked last Sat. Used the rest. Weds the 22nd Geo and I went down to the Bennett Branch and picked gooseberries enough to can 4 quts. Canned them today. Walt come this eve. Sanford breaking, Elmer dragging corn. Thurs 23rd Walt went to Ida this fore noon to get his breaking plow fixed. Broke on the south 80 this afternoon. Worked in the dam by the well. Geo and I washed. Freem helped a little 2 or 3 washes. This eve the boys all went to Welda to a Dr. concert. Fri the 24th Walt went over to the 80 to break and broke the plow point he got fixed yesterday and took it back this forenoon. This after noon looked rainy. He went over but soon come back. Rained hard in Mont Ida, just a little here. Sanford working on the pond. Elmer dragging corn. On the way last night Walt found a chunk of meat some one had lost on the way from town, as supposed. Sunday 26th John come last eve. We were all gone. Freem and I went to see Mr. Herford who took with a pain in his hip. The boys all went to Welda to the Dr concert. Tis the lat night. There was there 2 weeks. John an I went over in the North timber to get goosberries. We got near a flour sack full. Thurs the 30th Walt went back to his place this morn. He was here 3 days. This week he will have to replant some of his corn. Fri. 31st We have had quite a good deal of rain this week. Sowed the millet on the South 80 today. Freem went to Ida yesterday then went 4 miles to get 2 bu of millet seed. Took some butter to Ida and got me a preserve kettle. A peddler from Nebraska here to night. Took off 39 chicks this morn from 5 hens the last now of this spring. Only one hen to come off yet. June Sat the 1st Very warm this week, some rain. Been quite cold an very hard wind at times this spring. Tis getting dry now. Rain is needed. Freem took my 3 pigs to town to day, weighed 575 lbs at 4 cts lb. I raised them myself from little pigs. The boys helped some. He did not give me a cent. That makes 55 dollars he took of my hard nocks in the last two yrs. It is alright. A lonely road that has no turn. A peddler from Neb stoped here last night. He is an ol country man from Palistine. Sun the 2nd Boys all home for dinner. The best part of my life is when all home. Mon the 3rd The old man an Sanford plowing corn. The first time Freem has went to the field to plow corn in a long time. Elmer is tending Normal. Commenced today. Geo and I went to Walts this fornoon. Wed the 5th Geo plowing corn the 1st day he ever plowed all day. He plowed nearly half day yesterday. Freem hoeing all day. I have hold in the garden all the week so far some each day. Put up the last qut of tame gooseberries today. Have caned 10 gal and 1 qut tame and Wild about half of each. Made 1 gal of tame gooseberries preserves and 2 gal of Jell. Thurs. 6th Walt come home this eve. Went back as soon as he eat supper. Fri. the 7th Walt an Freem went to the timber to get some pokes to put on the cattle this after noon. Walt went back to his place. Sat the 8th They all but Geo went to the South 80. They boys went to plow. Freem went to plant some truck and when they got over there they found a lot of cattle in the field, so it took till 4 clock to fix fense and to get done plowing what corn there was. Sun, the 9th This is childrens day at Welda. John and Elmer went to Fairview to Sunday school and then went to Welda. It looked so much like rain and did rain a little they come back before service commenced. Frank summers come long an was here for supper. Walt and Dave Collins come before dinner. After dinner Dave went off. Walt started to Welda. Looks so much like rain, guess he did not go any further than his place. After supper John an Frank Summers went to Ida Childrens service there to night. John as to go 12 miles to where he works to night. He traded Frank his bugy harness an Robe. Elmer got a letter yesterday from one of his cousin Oregon he never see. She is 17. Freem an Geo went to Ida to church. Green beans for dinner Fri an to day. Sat 15th No memory taken since last Sun. Yesterday Geo and I went down to old Man ________ to pick cherries. We got 2 gal. canned 3 qut an eat the rest. Lots of rain now. This week too wet to plow corn most all week. The boys plowed today. Freem took the milk to Welda. He got there 1st this morn. He come right back then went to Garnett. Did not come back till night. I sent with him to get 1 Doz cans self ceilers for John. Walt come home this morn, stayed till after dinner. Commenced selling the milk yesterday morn. We take 2 cans 10 gal each. Went to Walts weds, then Thurs. eve went to see Roy Doll. He has been laid up since the 12th of Feb with a very bad ankle an foot caused by a bruise. This afternoon Geo went to Ida. Go a letter from sister Rose. Said her son Ozro had buried his wife. She died the 7th Mon the 17th Very hot. Geo and I an Mr. Crouse and wife went to Henry Daniels to pick cherries. They got 9 gal. We got 71/2 gal. Paid 3 cts qut and picked them all. Sun the 23 Very hot all of last week. Some nights cool. Geo Clark was here one night this week. I caned 3 gal of cherries this last week. 3 gal an 3 quts in all caned. Last Thurs eve Sanford went to Garnett to the Teachers Contest. Elmer did not come home that after noon. Fri after noon he stayed for the ice cream supper. Got home after midnight. Last eve Sanford an Walt went to Ida to the Woodman festival an concert. To day Sanford and Elmer went to Spring field school house to church, drove Frank colt. John has not come home today. Walt come at noon. Picked the first pickles this morn. Plenty of garden truck now. Rained a little shower. Yesterday after Noon a boy peddler stoped here one day this last week selling silver ware. Got a set of teaspoons for 60cts. He said he ad been selling them at 2.50 but he could not make nothing. Times too hard. An he was going to quit the Business. Tues the 25th Planted some Cabbage seed in the turnip bed sure head an planted some Peas and beans. Rained a hard shower this eve. The wind blew hard for a few minutes. Sanford plowing corn in the last field. Fri the 28th Rained nearly all fore noon. This afternoon sprinkled. Freem did not get back from the Creamery till near noon. I commenced to clean up stairs and took a notion to white was for we seldom have plenty of water. An this after noon Elmer went to Ida to get lime and white wash brush an it was 15 past 3 when he got back. I white washed one room and finished cleaning but did not get the Beadstead put up. Got them ready. The men moved some hay yesterday to get 4th money an now tis all spoiled for bailing. Walt an Joe Slutz bailed some yesterday. Geo drove. I went over there to red up for Walt and Geo come home with me. They finished bout 6 clock. The men fixed some fense this after noon and then went a fishing. Got nothing. Stoped at Herfords and got tobacco plants. Sat the 29th Rained hard last night and rainey this fore noon and some this afternoon. Sun the 30th John come home yesterday afternoon. To day looks rainy. So wet cant plow corn and he quite where he was to work. All boys home for dinner. July Mon 1st 1895 Walt an John went to Elmer Fentons. John went to settle up with Elmer for his work. They come through Garnett an John traded his horse and 30 dol not 38 dol cash for a New bugy. Tues the 2nd I went to Garnett with Crouse and wife. Got back at noon. Real mudy. Freem went in with Jim Collins. We met them at Hiatts as we come out. Rained some this afternoon. Weds 3rd Freem went back to Garnett to day. I sent some young chickens 9cts 1b cash. Thurs July 4 Walt and John went to Colony. All the rest of us went to Dr Bloombah timber to a Methodist picnick ® miles from here 2 or more the way we went. Very hot and looked like rain. An we come home early. 4 clock when we got home. Fri the 5th Rained all eve, soon after we got home and all night hard. Cedar up a booming this morn. This is after noon Geo and I went to see Mrs. Slutz. She is real poorly. The men fixen fense. Walt and John got far as Walts last eve. Soon after it begin to rain he come home this fore noon. We cooked supper her and took it to Walts. Then we dumped the dishes all in the tub and come home. The threshers here all night. Tues. the 6th Went back to Walts this morn to finish threshing. I went to straighten up what we left undone last night. They finished threshing before noon an then went to Stigleys. This eve Geo and I went to Herfords to get 2 sacks of apples to dry. Fri 9th I an Geo went to Joe Slutz to get some peaches. We got over 2 bu to dry on the shares. Sat the 10th We put out the peaches this fore noon. This after noon come up a shower. June Mon June 1st Been rainy the last two weeks. Too wet to work in field or garden, tho the boys plowing corn an dragging in millet. Yesterday John come. Went back this morn.
