Interment was in Bethel Cemetery in Westphalia. Mrs. Funderburgh died Friday, May 19, at Guest Home Estates in Garnett. Vera Funderburgh was born May 31, 1905, west of Garnett, the daughter of Sam A. and Bettie (Beahm) Heck. She moved with her parents to Sawyer, KS, at an early age and there first attended school. After a few years, they moved back to Garnett where she attended Patton School. At age 14, Vera was baptized into the Old German Baptist Church and remained an active member all her life. In the 1920's, she worked with her sister, Ruth, as a telephone operator at Harris. She later went to Indiana to assist her grandfather, John Beahm, after her grandmother, Adria, passed away. She was there a few years and eventually met her future husband, Frank Funderburgh. After her Grandfather Beahm died, she moved back to Kansas and soon married Frank in 1933. They lived in Anderson County for a couple of years and then because of the farm depression, moved to Indiana to live near his parents. They farmed there for 20 years and returned to Anderson County in the 1950's. They bought the old home originally built by Peter Heck, her grandfather. They farmed for several years and also Vera began working as a cook at the Anderson County Hospital. When Frank retired from farming, they moved to Seventh Street in Garnett. Vera continued to work at the hospital and eventually became head cook. She retired in 1973 after 20 years. After retirement, she cared for Frank, volunteered at the Thrift Shop, sewed, cooked, and spent time with neighbors and family. She and Frank celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1983. He husband died in 1990. Vera enjoyed good health, and loved spending time with relatives and church members. She celebrated her 100th birthday in 2005. She loved flowers and cooking. Her greatest gifts in life were her patience, her loving spirit, positive attitude, and the unique gift of making each person feel very special. She rarely complained and was always ready with a smile. She was ever diligent in thrift and made do. Her conservative upbringing and hard work made her very frugal. Even though she had no children of her own, she loved her nieces and nephews and the children of the Church. She was known by all as Aunt Vera, even though not everyone was related. Mrs. Funderburgh was also preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Bettie Heck; and her sisters, Ruth Lybarger and Mary Alberta Kellerman. Vera is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, many friends and Church members. Vera was an inspiration to all who knew her for her loving, caring personality and her simple and beautiful Christ-like strength. She will be greatly missed and yet remembered by all who knew her. Casketbearers were Dale Lybarger, Ron Lybarger, Larry Lybarger, Darrel Kellerman, Dennis Kellerman, Terry Kellerman, and Ray Hauke.
