Mr. Frear died Sunday, June 4, at his home." "Carol Sue East 1942-2006 Graveside services and interment for Carol Sue East, 63, Ottawa, were Monday, June 5, 2006, at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Mrs. East died Thursday, June 1, at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. Carol Sue East was born September 25, 1942, at Mexico, MO, the daughter of Lindel Sherwood and Edith E. (Eller) Chism. At the age of three, she moved with her family from Mexico, MO to Ottawa where she lived all of her life with the exception of a year when she lived in Wichita. Carol attended Ottawa schools and, in 1979, earned a General Equivalency Degree and attended Neosho County Community College in Ottawa for one year. She was a homemaker and had also been employed by Parmalee, Ottawa Retirement Village, and Econo Lodge, all in Ottawa. She was a member of North Baptist Church in Ottawa. On June 11, 1960, Carol was united in marriage with Bob West. They later divorced. On July 3, 1990, Carol was united in marriage with Ray East in Ottawa. They were later divorced. Mrs. East was preceded in death by her son, David West; and her father, Lindel Chism. Carol is survived by her son, Mike West of Ottawa; her daughter, Cindy Roberts of Welda; her daughter-in-law, Wendy Schultz of Ottawa; her mother, Edith Chism of Ottawa; her brother, Vernon Chism of Las Vegas, NV; her sisters, Linda LeMaster of Ottawa and Katie Loseke of Topeka; and nine grandchildren. The family suggests memorial be made to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation. Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, was in charge of arrangements." Page 5, Column 2: "Craig E. Spain 1954-2006 Funeral services for Craig E. Spain, 51, Garnett, were Monday, June 5, 2006, at Farris- Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Pastor Steve Bubna and Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Lone Elm Cemetery, Lone Elm, KS. Mr. Spain died Wednesday, May 31, at Garnett. Craig E. Spain was born September 10, 1954, at Eureka, the son of Albert and Sue Ann (Richardson) Spain. He grew up in Eureka, graduating from high school there in 1973. He later served in the United States Air Force. He returned to the Eureka area and worked on a local ranch. Craig moved to the Kincaid area in 1980 and lived in Garnett for the last 10 years. He worked for Gates Manufacturing in Iola for the last 11 years. He also worked at Bill's Quick Shop in Garnett for the last three years. He loved ranching and roping, and had been a 4-H leader. Craig and Patty Holt were married in 1981. This union was blessed with two children. They later divorced. Mr. Spain was preceded in death by his daughter, Chelsie Ann Spain on July 23, 2004; and his father, Albert Spain. Craig is survived by his son, Brad Spain of Manhattan; his mother, Sue Spain of Eureka; his brothers, Alan Spain of Emporia and Doug Spain of Americus; two nieces, two nephews, and three great-nieces. Music was provided by Karen Revey. Musical selections included 'Precious Memories' and 'Amazing Grace', and 'Ships Of Heaven' on CD. Casketbearers were Henry Womelsdorf, Wade Wilson, Terry Zook, Bill Feuerborn, Gary Minckley, and Dustin Elik. Honorary casketbearers were Vern Gardner, Larry Mains, Dale Hubler, Larry Richardson, and Troy Richardson. The family suggests memorials be made to the Chelsie Spain Memorial Scholarship in care of Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, who was in charge of arrangements." Page 5, Column 3: "Wayne George Kurtz 1918-2006 Funeral services for Wayne George Kurtz, 87, Westphalia, were Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Interment was in Westphalia Cemetery. Mr. Kurtz died Wednesday morning, May 31, at the Life Care Center of Burlington. Wayne George Kurtz, the only child of George Jacob and Maude (Rooney) Kurtz, was born June 18, 1918, near Westphalia, on the family farm which would be his home all his life. He attended Steen rural school and graduated from Westphalia High School in 1936. He was a farmer and stockman. Wayne was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church at Westphalia until it closed, and in later years attended St. John Lutheran Church at Aliceville. Wayne and Alice Louise Miller were married April 25, 1964, at Winfield. They were the parents of one son, Darwin Wayne Kurtz. He loved the farm life and loved sharing that with his wife and son. Alice preceded him in death on March 9, 1999. Wayne is survived by his son, Darwin Kurtz and his wife, Jenny, and granddaughter, Allison Sue Kurtz, who live on the family farm near Westphalia.
