September 6, 2006 The ADVOCATE Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 10, No. 68 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 5, Column 1: "Sandra Jean Doty 1935-2006 Funeral services for Sandra Jean Doty, 71, Garnett, were Friday, September 1, 2006, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Matt Benorden, of Hospice Care of Kansas, officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Doty died Tuesday, August 29, at Anderson County Hospital. Sandra Jean Doty was born March 3, 1935, at Ottawa, the daughter of Kenneth Maurice Crippen and Ethel May (Hunt) Crippen. She graduated from Garnett High School in 1953 and attended Kansas University. Sandy married Robert Lee Powers on August 29, 1954, at Garnett. They had four children, Vicki Lee, Mary Dee, Robert Elliott, and a son who died in infancy. This marriage ended in divorce. Sandy remained friends with Bob until his death on March 25, 1991. Sandy and Richard Douglas Doty were married April 5, 1980, at Garnett. She was the co-owner of Powers Motors, Inc. from 1966 until 1974 and was the third generation to own and operate the Hunt Furniture Company, which had been in her family since 1902. She was a former member of the Garnett Jaycee Janes, the Garnett Country Club, Friends of the Library, and she was instrumental in the organization of the Anderson County Hospital Auxiliary Pink Ladies. She and her husband, Dick, retired in 1984 and spent many years traveling and dividing their time between Yuma, AZ, Glen Echo, CO, and Garnett. Although Sandy traveled extensively in her lifetime, living in Hawaii, Colorado, Arizona, and Kansas, she was always a Kansas girl at heart. Her home was always open to friends and family. She was a wonderful listener, an avid reader, and enjoyed good conservation and debate on a wide range of subjects. Mrs. Doty was preceded in death by her infant son; and her parents, Kenneth and Ethel Crippen. Sandy is survived by her husband, Dick, of the home; her daughters, Vicki Mills and husband Bob, and Mary Gedrose and husband Sheldon, all of Garnett; her son, Bob (Rep) Powers, Arkansas City; her stepchildren, Rusty Doty and wife Debbie of Lenexa, Denise Doty of Aurora, CO, Matt Doty and wife Debbie of Littleton, CO, and Doug Doty of Garnett; her grandchildren, Eric Callahan, Chris Callahan and wife Michelle, Rob Mills, Malia Duncan, Brian Gedrose, and Kevin Gedrose; her great-granddaughter, Haley Gedrose; her step-grandchildren, Travis Doty and wife Wendy, Candice Doty, Tanner Doty, Carson Doty, Margo Doty, Darcy Doty, Robynn Doty, and Meghan Lawrence and husband Rob; and her step-great-grandchildren, Alexis Doty, Brayden Harvey, and Dylan Lawrence. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, organist. Musical selections included 'Over The Rainbow' sung by Malia J. Duncan, 'The Lord's Prayer' sung by Scott Schulte, and "On The Road Again'. Casketbearers were Eric Callahan, Chris Callahan, Rob Mills, Brian Gedrose, Kevin Gedrose, and Travis Doty. Honorary casketbearers were Jim Johnson, Jim Cooper, Walt Wilcox, Sam Mills, Bill Mills, Pat Callahan, Roy Salazar, and Ron Callahan. The family suggests memorials be made to the Anderson County Hospital Foundation or to Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements."
