"Pansy Leota Wharton 1905-2006 Pansy Leota Wharton lived a long victorious life of 101 years and left us this past Monday night, while being treated in Grove Integris Hospital. She was the oldest resident of Grove Nursing Center, where she resided after leaving Vinita in 2002. She is survived by her children: two sons, Raymond Jones and wife Fran of Belton, MO, and Paul Jones and wife Darlene of Beggs, OK; three daughters, Lucille Whitchurch of Jay, OK, Martha Claggett and husband Kermit of Vinita, OK, and Ruth Ann Schwan and husband Carl of Lafayette, CA. Also surviving Mrs. Wharton are her 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Mille Waddle of Vinita, OK. Her parents, husbands, three sisters, one brother, and one daughter, Ruth Jones Linton, preceded Mrs. Wharton in death. Born April 30, 1905, during her lifetime of accomplishments, Pansy was most noted for her care for other people. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, Pansy worked in hospitals and nursing home care organizations during most of her life. Her most noted positions were as Administrator of the Douglas County Nursing Home and the Executive Director of the Sunflower Nursing Center in Lawrence. At age 83, she became the Social and Rehabilitation Services Homemaker for the elderly in Colony. One of her favorite recollections was in 1937 (the year penicillin was first introduced in her area). The local doctor began allowing nurses to administer the drug. She was 32 years old when she stayed overnight at the bed of a child and administered penicillin for a double pneumonia case. The medical community was so primitive in those days that she had to wrap the penicillin in small pieces of paper and add drops of water to dissolve it so she could administer it to the child. Pansy remained active in her community and served in a leadership role in many clubs throughout her life. She was the director for the Colony Fiddlers and Pickin' Group in Colony. She also served as secretary to the Crest Seniors group in colony. She was a member of the Kensington Priscilla and Happy Circle clubs, and served as secretary to the numerous pony pull clubs she and her husband were active in throughout Kansas. Additionally, Pansy enjoyed being at home, piecing her quilts and crocheting gifts for her family. She enjoyed yard work and loved giving away her flowers and vegetables from the gardens. However, her favorite hobby was fishing. During her late retirement years, she has spent many hours at Grand Lake and Eufaula Lake, relaxing with her rod and reel. Pansy also enjoyed music. She grew up in a family of entertainers and was well known for playing the piano and singing at every party she attended. Everyone around her enjoyed her sense of humor and kindness. She never knew a stranger and 'found the best in everyone she encountered'. Funeral services for Pansy Leota Wharton were Saturday, October 14, 2006, at Burckhalter Memorial Chapel with Dr. Larry Wallace officiating. Interment was in Bluejacket Cemetery. Casketbearers were Bobby Whitchurch, David Claggett, Kevin Waddle, Brad Claggett, Benjamin Claggett, Tim Jones, Jake Jones, and Larry Jones.
