Bill Nelson officiating. Interment was in Welda Cemetery. Mr. Martin died Friday, January 27, at Golden Heights Living Center. Harold Marion Martin was born May 11, 1922, at Manhattan, the son of Wilson Marion and Christieanna (Brubaker) Martin. He graduated from Welda High School with the Class of 1940. Harold served with the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. Harold and Mary Ann Bradshaw were married April 23, 1972, at the Welda United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death in 2000. Mr. Martin is survived by his brothers, Frank Martin of Texarkana, TX, Edgar Martin of Colorado Springs, CO, Kenneth Martin of Baldwin, and George Martin of Wichita; and his sisters, Lois Amend of Lyons, Velma Pretzer of Garnett, Ella Thacker of Lecompton, Elsie Menefee of Alden, Edna M. Hazen of Wichita, Marietta Martin of Lawrence, and Sarah Hartpence of Roanoke, TX. Casketbearers were Larry Diebolt, Jim Stinnett, Larry Martin, Patrick Okonkwo, Willis Pretzer, and Kevin Pretzer. The family suggests memorial contributions to Midland Hospice or Welda United Methodist Church. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements." "Melissa Garrett 1980-2006 Funeral services for Melissa Garrett, 25, Richmond, were Wednesday, February 1, 2006, at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, with Rev. Rick Randall officiating. Interment was in Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Garrett died as the result of a car accident on Saturday, January 28. Melissa Garrett was born June 2, 1980, at Ottawa, the daughter of Doug Weppler and Janet (Pate) and Jeff Clauser. She grew up in Lawrence and Ottawa, moving to Richmond in 1999. She attended Lawrence and Ottawa High School with the Class of 1998. Melissa had been a Mental Health Technician at the Osawatomie State Hospital for the past year. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Ottawa. Melissa and Jesse Garrett were married November 19, 1999, at Centropolis. He survives of the home. Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her grandmother, Nadine Gremminger; and her grandfather, Eddie Pate. Melissa is also survived by her sons, Zeke Garrett and Clayton Garrett, both of the home; her mother and her husband, Janet and Jeff Clauser of Ottawa; her father, Doug Weppler of Springfield, MO; her brother, Zackary Jackson of Lawrence; her sister, Kelsey Jean Jackson of Ottawa; her grandfather, Bill Gremminger of Ottawa; her grandmother, Ella Weppler of Arizona; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Page 5, Column 2: "Charles A. Hardesty 1922-2006 Funeral services for Charles A. Hardesty, 83, Garnett, were Thursday, February 2, 2006, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mr. Hardesty died Monday morning, January 30, at Olathe Medical Center. The youngest son of Price Albert and Emma Ann (Martin) Hardesty, Charles was born June 4, 1922, on the family farm near Bush City. He attended school at the Sunbeam School where he was still in contact with one of his former teachers, Lula Robinson. Charles and Margaret Ann Ecord were married July 5, 1952, at Eureka Springs, AR. To this union one daughter was born, Becky. Margaret preceded Chuck in death on August 17, 1984. At the very young age of 16, Chuck was introduced to the oil business as a tool dresser for Lincoln Holmes. The oil business became his passion. He would eventually own three rigs of his own. Between starting in the oil business and becoming a contractor, he served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Otus in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning home he continued in the oil business until 1969. In 1969, he, Margaret, and Becky moved to Boulder City, NV. While in Boulder City he worked for the Natural Gas Company. In 1973, the family moved back to Garnett settling on Margaret's family farm, where they lived until Margaret's death, at which time he moved to Garnett. In 1980, he returned to the oil business and developed M.A.E. Resources, Inc., which he was active in the daily operations until poor health caused him to retire in June of 2003. He held membership in Fuller Thompson American Legion, VFW Post 6397, and Delphian Lodge #44, Mirza Shrine of Pittsburg, and Scottish Rite Fort Scott Consistory. Mr. Hardesty was also preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Emma Hardesty; his brothers, Earl, Pyrl, and Alfred; his sister, Lola May; his half brother, Veryl Hardesty, and his half sister, Opal Kirby. Charles is survived by his daughter, Becky and son-in-law, Terry Johnson of Parker; his two grandchildren, Jerred Johnson of Overland Park and Emily and Kelby Dickey of Lenexa; his nieces, Mary Martin of Garnett, Barbara Moore of Danville, IL, and Virginia Hansen of Burlington; his nephew, Bill Hardesty of Danville, IL; and a host of family and friends. Music was provided by Jon Covault, organist, and Pam Covault, vocalist. Musical selections included 'The Old Rugged Cross' and 'In The Garden'. Casketbearers were Mike Blaufuss, Tom Blaufuss, Brad Cook, Bobby Davis, Danny Martin, and Bryan Miller. Honorary casketbearers were Orville Cole, Steve Doering, Fred Mitchelson, Paul Thornbrugh, and James Smith. The family suggests memorial contributions to Shriner's Children's Hospital. Haight, 36, Lawrence, were Thursday, February 2, 2006, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence. Mr. Haight died Saturday, January 28, the result of injuries received in an automobile accident on Highway 24 north of Lawrence. Steven A. Haight was born January 10, 1970, at Garnett, the son of Roger and Donnis (Istas) Haight. He grew up on the family farm near Lane. He participated in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H where he won numerous distinctions, including the 4-H Key Award and Santa Fe Achievement Award. As a child, Steve helped on the farm and played guitar in a trio with his brothers at 4-H and FFA events. He also loved horseback riding, hunting elk and deer with his father, and other outdoor activities. In the mid-1990's he was involved in the Lawrence music scene as a bass player for the band Julia Surrendered. Steve was a 1988 graduate of Central Heights High School, where he was honored as the valedictorian of his class. He excelled in track, football, and music. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Kansas in 1993. He had lived in Lawrence since the fall of 1988. For many years, he was employed as a systems specialist in the Computer Center on the University of Kansas campus. Steve and Jennifer Frazier were married on April 19, 2001, in Honolulu, HI. She survives of their home. Mr. Haight was preceded in death by his grandmother, Hazel Randle; his grandfathers, Reuben Haight and Albert Istas; and his step-grandfathers, Homer White and Louis Randle. Steve is also survived by his son, Austin Haight of Lawrence; his daughter, April Haight of Lawrence; his parents, Roger and Donnis Haight of Lane; his brothers, Travis Haight of Olathe and Brian Haight of Shawnee; and his paternal grandmother, Bertha White of LaCygne. He was a wonderful husband and father and will be missed dearly by his family and numerous friends, and will always be remembered for his gentle, easygoing manner.
