Rainbolt 1935-2006 Memorial services for John E. Rainbolt, 71, Garnett, were Sunday, December 3, 2006, at Garnett United Methodist Church. A memorial service with military honors is planned for a later date in Pulaski, TN. Mr. Rainbolt died Saturday, December 2, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa. Mr. Rainbolt has been cremated. John E. Rainbolt was born October 17, 1935, at Lewis, KS, the son of Ernest R. and Ella (Kilgore) Rainbolt. He earned his G.E.D. while serving in the military and attended four years of college. He served eight years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War in the 1950's, working in radar. John was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a manager in Avionics Electronics. John and his wife lived in the R.V. and traveled for the last six years, stopping often to stay in Garnett. He lived in many states including Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, Alabama, Texas, Minnesota, and Tennessee. John was united in marriage to Laura Morse. She preceded him in death. On October 11, 1997, John was united in marriage with Joan Stafford in Prospect, TN. She survives of their home. Mr. Rainbolt was also preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ella Rainbolt; three brothers and two sisters. John is also survived by his sons, Michael Rinebolt of Garnett, John Rainbolt of Chimayo, NM, Richard Rainbolt of Los Angeles, CA, Randy Word of Prospect, TN, and Michael Word of Columbia, TN; his daughters, Sherry Rainbolt-Robison of Madison, AL, and Anne Rainbolt of Prospect, TN; his sisters, Hazel Grobowski of Oklahoma City, OK, Mary Ohman of Edgewood, NM, Ella Haskins of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Edna Pumphrey of Wichita; 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of friends. Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, was in charge of arrangements." "Raymond Yoder Funeral services for Raymond Yoder, rural Hutchinson, were Thursday, December 7, 2006, in Hutchinson. Mr. Yoder died on Monday, December 4, in a Wichita hospital as the result of a train-truck accident on November 27. He was the son of Ezra Yoder, Jr. and Fern Yoder, formerly of Garnett. His grandmother is Millie Yoder, rural Garnett. A complete obituary will appear in the Advocate at a later date." Page 5, Column 2: Bertha C. Sobba 1918-2006 Mass of Christian Burial for Bertha C. Sobba, 88, Garnett, was Monday, December 4, 2006, at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Father Brian Klingele officiating. Interment was in Holy Angels Cemetery. Mrs. Sobba died Friday, November 29, at Golden Heights Living Center. Bertha C. Sobba was born January 9, 1918, in Anderson County, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Brummel) Pickert. She was a lifetime resident of the Garnett area. She grew up in the Franklin and Anderson County area. She was a member of the St. Therese Catholic Church in Richmond. After moving to Garnett in 1987, she attended Holy Angels Church. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking, crocheting, and embroidery. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Bertha and Joseph Sobba were married May 29, 1939, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on October 29, 1987. Mrs. Sobba was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Pickert; her sister, Irene Feuerborn; and her brothers, Earl Pickert, Elmer Pickert, Harold Pickert, and Herman Pickert. Bertha is survived by her sons, Earl Madison and his wife Bernadette of Blue Springs, MO, Robert Sobba and his wife Norma of Ottawa, and Leroy Sobba and his wife Patricia of West Plains, MO; her daughters, Mary Graham and her husband Frank of Garnett, and Berniece Brown and her husband Charles, also of Garnett; her brother, Ivo Pickert of Jefferson City, MO; her sister, Berniece Steele of Garnett; 21 grandchildren and 23 great- grandchildren. Music was provided by Lucas Tappan, organist, and Scott Schulte, vocalist. Musical selections included 'All Creatures Of Our God and King', 'Amazing Grace', 'Ave Maria', and 'May The Angels Lead You Into Paradise". Casketbearers were Ken Sobba, Bill Graham, Gordon Brown, Mike Brown, Jeff Madison, and Chad Eddy. The family suggests memorial be made to Golden Heights Living Center. "Ronald Zornes 1922-2006 Funeral services for Ronald Zornes, 84, Moran, are Saturday, December 9, at 10:30 a.m. at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Funeral Home in Iola. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 8, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home." "Lola Mae Broers 1946-2006 Funeral services for Lola Mae Broers, 60, Richmond, were Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Interment was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mrs. Broers died Sunday, December 3, at Richmond Care Center after a 10-year battle with a rare illness, cortico-basal ganglionic degeneration. She had been a resident of the Center since 2001. She lived the majority of her life in the Ottawa and Franklin County area. Lola Mae Broers was born May 26, 1946, at Ottawa, the daughter of Ernest Paul and Iva Mae (Bethurum) Sink. She attended Baxter Grade School and Appanoose High School in Franklin County and graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1964. Lola worked two years at Hallmark Cards in Lawrence, then provided day care for children for several years. She also worked at Our Own Hardware in Ottawa for 12 years and two years as custodian for the First Christian Church in Ottawa, retiring in March 1996. She worked at the Wellsville Senior Center as a relief supervisor in 1999 and 2000. She helped with the work on their dairy farm over the years and also volunteered as a 4-H project leader for 11 years. Lola's memberships and associations over the years included Baxter Social Hour Club, Lincoln PTA, Cloverleaf 4-H Club (leader for 10 years), the Susannas at Trinity United Methodist Church, and First Christian Church (deaconess and custodian), all of Ottawa; and was currently a member of Wellsville United Methodist Church. On March 13, 1965, Lola was united in marriage with Gene A. Broers at Wellsville. They celebrated 41 years of marriage. He survives of their home. Mrs. Broers was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Iva Sink. Lola is also survived by her daughters, Sondra Kay Meadows and her husband, Darrin, of Glade Hill, VA, and Sherrill Lynn Cruz and her husband, Gilbert, of Topeka; her brother, John Sink and his wife, Virgie, of Ottawa; and her grandchildren, Sean Meadows, Sara Meadows, Sydney Meadows, Ben Meadows, Brigette Meadows, Porter Cruz and Piper Cruz. 'Shorty' Spring, 65, Ottawa, were Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at Church of the Nazarene in Ottawa. Mr. Spring died Thursday, November 20, at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. Richard R. Spring was born July 23, 1941, at Kansas City, MO, the son of Harold Franklin and Ida Marie (Haley) Spring-Wilson. He was a near lifelong Ottawa resident. He was employed as a sanitation worker by Johnny Keenan and Vernon Honn for 20 years, retiring for health reasons in 1992. He attended Church of the Nazarene in Ottawa. On November 2, 1982, Shorty was united in marriage with Janice Green in Ottawa. She survives of their home. Mr. Spring was preceded in death by his father, Harold Spring; his brother, David Spring; his sister, Diane Barber; and his infant granddaughter, Kayla Lawrence. Richard is also survived by his mother, Ida Marie Spring-Wilson of Richmond; his daughter and son-in-law, Tonya and Michael Sheldon of Ottawa, his daughter and companion, Michelle Green and Richard Wadewitz of Quenemo, his daughter and son- in-law, Mary and Leo Davis of Trenton, MO, his daughter, Shirley Lawrence of Eudora, his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Neil Walles of Aurora, MO, and his daughter, Wendy Rowans of Trenton, MO; his son, Mark Miller of Ottawa; 27 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Dixon 1925-2006 Private inurnment services for Melvin L. Dixon, 80, Ottawa, were held at Highland Cemetery in Ottawa. Mr. Dixon died Wednesday, November 29, at his home. Melvin L. Dixon was born December 18, 1925, at Grove, AR, the son of William London and Emma Marie (Ramsey) Dixon. He attended Western Grove High School in Western Grove, AR. He moved from Arkansas to Lawrence in 1953 and then to Ottawa in 1956. Melvin worked as a truck driver for Delers Transportation Company of Liberty, MO, for 25 years, retiring in 1969. He was also a car salesman for Alvin Crist Auto in Ottawa for 27 years, retiring in 2001. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. On March 12, 1954, Melvin was united in marriage with Nina M. Roberts in Lamar, MO. She survives of their home. Mr. Dixon was preceded in death by his parents, William and Emma Dixon; and an infant brother, Phillip Ross Dixon. Melvin is also survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Terri Dixon of Rantoul, and Larry and Janna Dixon of Ottawa; his brother and sister-in-law, Mitchell and Candy Martin of Washington, MO; his sisters, Norma Sharp of Clarksville, TN, and Willadean West of Springfield, MO; his grandchildren, Amy Castleberry of Ottawa, Anita Hoekstra of Overland Park, John Dixon of DeSoto, and Chelsea Bueno of Ottawa; and five great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to American Legion Baseball, and can be left in care of Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, who was in charge of arrangements."
