Mrs. Smith-McGlothlin died Tuesday, December 5, at Moran Manor. Helen Juanita Smith-McGlothlin was born March 23, 1918, at Selma, the daughter of Hugh L. and Margaret (Yelton) Canady. She was a member of the Moran Christian Church and served as secretary for the Sunday School for over 20 years. Helen and Eldon H. Smith were married July 1, 1935, at Garnett. He preceded her in death in 1988. Helen and Eldon McGlothlin were married June of 1992 at Moran. He preceded her in death in 1999. Mrs. Smith-McGlothlin was also preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Margaret Canaday; her sisters, Hazel McMillin and Bonnie Beckett; and her brothers, Jess 'Toad' Canady and Art Canaday. Helen is survived by her daughters, Shirley Houk of Linn Valley, KS, and Maxine Merrell of Kingman, AZ; her sisters, Vina Huffman of Amarillo, TX, and Della Thompson of Garnett; Kathy Ann Singer, Stephen Dwayne Houk, Debra Sue Spencer, Alan Deon Houk, Glenn Russell Houk, William J. Merrell, and Marsha L. Ware; 19 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were Stephen Houk, Alan Houk, Glenn Houk, Roger Houk, Randy Spencer, and Dave Spangler. The family suggests memorials be made to Allen County Hospice or to Moran Manor. Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Moran, was in charge of arrangements." "Dorothy Carder-Johnston 1939-2006 Dorothy Carder-Johnston, 67, resident of the Life Care Center of Burlington passed away Friday, December 8, 1006. Dorothy had been recovering from surgery and had been a resident of Life Care since October 2. She had been making great progress and was recovering beyond everyone's expectations. Dorothy was born June 20, 1939, to Elmer and Elsie Carder in Chanute, where she attended schools. Dorothy married Ray Sjorlund in Chanute in 1959. This union was blessed with two sons and later ended in divorce. In 1974, Dorothy married Ira Johnston of McCune. They later divorced. Dorothy earned her real estate agent's license and later her real estate broker's license. She founded Johnston Realty while living in the McCune area. Dorothy was a devout Christian and was a member of the Nazarene Church in Pittsburg for several years, as well as Parsons Church of the Nazarene. Dorothy's favorite church times were spent in her Tuesday Bible Study Class that she had been attending for nearly 20 years in Pittsburg. She is no doubt ecstatic about her opportunity to meet and be with her Lord and Savior. Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Brad Sjorlund and his daughter Shayla of Pittsburg, and Jason Sjorlund and his Paula and their two children, Kaci and Jese, of Garnett; five sisters, Evelyn Lightwine and husband Harold of Chanute, Helen Hartwig and husband Charles of Humboldt, Carolyn Augusto of Independence, KS, Margaret Kerr and husband Berkley of Grove, OK, and Mary Ann Stinson of Madison; her brothers, Herb Carder of Silver Lake and Jr. Hufford and wife Leann of Fredonia; and many other nieces, nephews, and aunts. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Elsie Carder; and her sister Vivian Darity. Funeral services will be held at the Garnett Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday, December 13, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jim Sukraw officiating. The family will greet friends following the funeral services. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. The family requests donations to a memorial fund for the First Church of the Nazarene of Pittsburg. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements." Page 5, Column 2: "Opal Lucille Parks 1921-2006 Memorial services for Opal Lucille Parks, 85, Garnett, were Monday, December 11, 2006, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Inurnment was in Mont Ida Cemetery, Mont Ida, KS. Mrs. Parks died Thursday, December 7, at her home. Opal Lucille Parks was born July 31, 1921, at Westphalia, the daughter of William F. and Lucille T. (Huettenmueller) Long. She grew up in the Westphalia area, graduating from Westphalia High School. Opal and Benjamin F. Parks were married August 6, 1939, at Westphalia. He preceded her in death on February 2, 2002. Opal was a homemaker until her children were in high school. She then worked as a secretary for the Anderson County Engineer. In 1968, she and Bennie built the Garnett Skating Rink. They operated the skating rink over the next 20 years until they retired. Opal enjoyed oil painting. She created over 500 pictures while she painted. She also enjoyed crafts, crocheting, gardening, and her flowers. Mrs. Parks was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Lucille Long; and her sisters, Pearl Leah Obrecht and Ruby Parks. Opal is survived by her son, Ralph Parks and his wife, Linda, of Welda; her daughters, Phyllis Adams and her husband, Roger of Garnett, and Margaret Snyder and her husband, Duke, of Rogers, AR; her brother, Gail Long and his wife, Beverly, of Garnett; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. Music was provided by Laura Parks, organist, and Richard Parks, vocalist. Musical selections included 'In The Garden', 'Amazing Grace', and 'Go Rest High On That Mountain'. Page 5, Column 3: "Ronald Zornes 1922-2006 Funeral services for Ronald Zornes, 84, Moran, were Saturday, December 9, at Waugh- Yokum and Friskel Funeral Home in Iola. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Mildred. Mr. Zornes died peacefully at his home on Monday, December 4. Ronald Zornes was born August 31, 1922, in rural Mildred, the son of Otis and Eva (Jones) Zornes. Being the oldest son, he helped his parents with the farming and his siblings, sometimes delaying his education to do so. He graduated from Mildred High School in 1942. He continued to help his father and started his own farm. On June 3, 1951, he married Delorse Ard in Bronson. They made their home in the Mildred area until 1979, when they moved into Moran. Ronald farmed and raised cattle his entire life. For numerous years, he pulled Shetland ponies. Later he purchased Belgium draft horses. He entered them in parades throughout the area and used them for special events. Ronald was a member of the Kincaid Fair Association. For 36 years, he organized horse pulls for Kincaid Days. Ronald lived his entire life in Allen County, but loved to travel, including family vacations throughout the United States and trips to Germany and Japan. He was a member of the Moran Christian Church. Mr. Zornes was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Eva Zornes; three infant siblings; two brothers, C.W. 'Dub' Zornes and Orval 'Blacky' Zornes; and one sister, Leola Vanetta. Ronald is survived by his wife, Delorse, of the home; his sons, Terry and his wife, Kathy, of Moran and Kim and his wife, Kimberly, also of Moran; eight grandchildren, Renee Klingenberg and her husband, Allen, of Wichita; Jennifer Pohl of St. Joseph, MO, Dustin Earnest, Gabrielle Rice and her husband, Clarence, of Ottawa, Zackary, Zebadia, Zane, and Kitreana Zornes of Mildred; and four great-grandchildren, A.J., Tucker, Dillon, and Shannon. He is also survived by his brothers, Dale and his wife, Kathleen, of Lee's Summit, MO, and Larry and his wife, Sandy, of Moran; his sisters, Jane Herman of Derby, Ada Warnock and her husband, Howard, of Junction City, and Iva Stottler and her husband, Walt, of Moran; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Zornes of Iola and Delores Zornes of Moran; and numerous nieces and nephews.
