Gale Mack officiating. Mr. Clasen died Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at Anderson County Hospital in Garnett. George Henry Clasen II was born January 26, 1916, at Washington, KS, a twin son of George H. and Elizabeth Clasen. After attending grade and high school in Washington, he attended the University of Kansas, where he was a member of the KU Band and served one term as managing editor of the “University Daily Kansan”. He graduated in 1939 with a major in journalism. While attending college and for a few months after graduation, George was employed at the “Washington County Register” in Washington. On October 1, 1939, he purchased the Norborne, MO, “Democrat-Leader”. On October 28, 1939, George and Margaret West were united in marriage at Marysville, KS. They published the newspaper in Norborne until 1942, when he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After being discharged from the army in late 1945, the family lived in Washington and Marysville while he was employed at the “Marysville Advocate”. On July 1, 1946, the family purchased the “Florence Bulletin” in Florence, KS. While in Florence, Mr. Clasen was involved in numerous local activities, served on the Florence City Council, was president of the Florence Board of Education, was president of the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, Commander of the American Legion, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served as chairman of the Marion County Republican Party. In 1960, he was president of the Kansas Press Association. The Clasens purchased half interest in the Garnett Publishing Company on October 1, 1964, and moved to Garnett. From that time until June of 1985, when the Garnett Publishing Company was sold and he retired, George served as editor of the “Garnett Review” and assisted in the publication of the “Anderson Countian”. While in Garnett, Mr. Clasen was Commander of the American Legion, president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Garnett Rotary Club, and was chairman of the Anderson County Republican Central Committee. He also served one year as president of the Kansas Day Club and was an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1976. He was a member of the Garnett Rotary Club, the Garnett Country Club, the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion, the Garnett Area Chamber of Commerce and the Ambassadors Committee, the Barberhawks, the Anderson County Republican Central Committee, the Masonic Lodge, and the Contract Bridge Club. In 1997, George and Margaret Clasen were Grand marshals of the Garnett Area Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade, and in 2001 he was presented with a Community Service Award for his thirty-five years of service and work to the local Garnett Area Chamber of Commerce. The Anderson County Republican Party awarded Mr. Clasen with a resolution in October 2000, signed by Governor Bill Graves, acknowledging his sixty years of service to the Republican Party of Kansas. Mr. Clasen was preceded in death by his parents, George H. and Elizabeth Clasen; a stillborn daughter; and his twin brother. George is survived by his wife, Margaret, of the home; two sons, Richard Clasen, who is editor of “The Eureka Herald”, and his wife, Rachel, Eureka, KS, and David Clasen, who is a title examiner for Pacific Northwest Title Company, Seattle, WA; five grandchildren, Robert Clasen and his wife, Kelly, Belton, MO, Kathy Butler, Overland Park, KS, Shari Hendrickson and her husband, Jim, Olathe, KS, Rebecca Clasen and Robin Clasen, both of Eureka, KS; and eight great-grandchildren, Laureese, Katrina, Marjorie, Robert, Cynthia, Josh, James, and Sarah. Music was provided by Rev. Dennis Matthews, organist, and Robert Clasen, vocalist, who sang “Thank You” and “Amazing Grace”. The First United Methodist Church choir also sang. Memorials have been established in Mr. Clasen’s name to the First United Methodist Church of Garnett, the Garnett Public Library, and to the various organizations of which he was a member. The family received friends on Friday, November 29, 2002, at 7:00 p.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett. Milward, 87, Welda, KS, were Saturday, November 30, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett, with Richard Landees officiating. Interment was in Welda Cemetery. Mr. Milward died November 27, 2002, at Anderson County Hospital, Garnett. Memorials may be made to the Anderson County Hospital Endowment Fund. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” “John ‘Tommy’ Tyler 1933-2002 Memorial services for John ‘Tommy’ Tyler, 69, San Antonio, TX, formerly of Garnett, were Monday, November 25, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Garnett, with Father George Matz officiating. Inurnment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mr. Tyler died Wednesday, November 6, 2002, in San Antonio. John ‘Tommy’ Tyler was born September 22, 1933, in Garnett, the son of Miles and Velma Tyler. He was a 1951 graduate of Garnett High School. He served in the military for eight years with the United States Coast Guard and United States Air Force, after which he worked in various contracts as a civilian. He worked in Morocco, Libya, Turkey, and Germany. Tommy served two tours of duty at Shemya AFG in Alaska. Mr. Tyler was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Velma Tyler. Tommy is survived by his wife, Virginia; his three sons, John T. Tyler, Eden Prairie, MN, Robert Tyler, Wichita, KS, and Christopher Tyler, Mary Esther, FL; his two daughters, Anna Johnston, St. Michael, MN and Jeanne Marie Kruczek, Denver, CO; his former wife of thirty-four years, Mary Lynne ‘Lynnie’ (Grennan) Tyler, Denver, CO; seven grandchildren, Michael Frederickson and Leanne Frederickson, Prior Lake, MN, Jacob Tyler, Pierce Tyler, and Austin Tyler, Phoenix, AZ, and Nicholas Kruczek and Brenna Kruczek, Denver, CO; two sisters, Wilma Page, Missouri, and Norma Hermreck, Osawatomie, KS; and one brother, Gene Tyler, Florida. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, organist, and Scott Schulte, vocalist. Musical selections included “Be Not Afraid”, “Here I Am, Lord”, “Prayer of St. Francis”, and “How Great Thou Art”.
