December 31, 2003 The ADVOCATE Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 7, No. 103 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 5, Column 1: “Clara Ozella Hodgson 1902-2003 Funeral services for Clara Ozella Hodgson, 101, Garnett, were Friday, December 26, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Garnett, with Rev. Gale Mack and Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Hodgson died early Sunday morning, December 21, at Golden Heights Living Center. Clara Ozella Hodgson was born October 24, 1902, on a farm very near the Miami-Linn County line, the daughter of Garrett J. and Clara E. (Mundell) Young. Ozella attended schools in Miami and Linn Counties, and attended Parker High School. Due to an extended illness, she did not graduate with her class. Ozella and Emmett Russell Hodgson were married on May 25, 1921, at Paola, KS. She was a loving helpmate for 65 years. Her husband died on September 6, 1986, at the age of 85. To this union three children were born, La Vaughn (Hull) Dinges, Hays, KS, and Donna Umbarger and Delton Hodgson, both of Garnett. Ozella was active in PTA, BPW, Rebekah Lodge, Helping Hand Club, and the women’s bowling leagues. The First United Methodist Church was a focal point in her life, and she worked many hours through the United Methodist Women. At the time of families’ bereavement, Ozella was there with her homemade food. She and Emmett thoroughly enjoyed a good game of pitch. Her hands stayed busy with beautiful embroidery and crocheted afghans. Her family members were the recipients of this lovely handwork. She continued to create until macular degeneration forced her to quit. Her pies were legendary, and she pampered each family member with their favorite when they visited. In her later years, she appreciated the women who cared for her, making it possible for her to live in her own home until recently when she spent weekends at Golden Heights Living Center. She very much appreciated the good care from the staff at the center.
