Hirt 1929-2003 Mass of Christian Burial for Velma J. Hirt, 74, Harris, KS, was Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Emerald, KS, with Father Michael Hawken officiating. Lector was Frank Rockers. Gift Bearers were Lindsay Hirt, Jesica Hirt, Ashley Hirt, Kandace Bitts, Megan Bitts, Shawna Bitts, and Cheyenne Bitts, who took items representing Velma's life to the altar. Those items included her Rosary, wedding picture, C.C.D. book, a nun doll from Summer School, a cookbook, the water and wine, and Communion hosts. Interment was in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Mrs. Hirt died Friday, March 7, at Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa, KS. Velma J. Hirt was born January 30, 1929, at Scipio, KS, the daughter of Albert and Mary (Pickert) Rockers. She graduated from Garnett High School with the Class of 1946. Velma had lived near Harris since 1948. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and Altar Society and was also a C.C.D. and summer school program teacher. Velma and Wayne L. Hirt were married April 6, 1948, at Garnett. Mrs. Hirt was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne L. Hirt, on April 2, 1988; her parents, Albert and Mary Rockers; and her brother, Merle Rockers. Velma is survived by her sons, Wayne (Gene) Hirt, Ottawa, KS, Dude Hirt and his wife, Diana, Emporia, KS, Terry Hirt, Garnett; Charlie Hirt and his wife, Kay, Richmond, KS, and Mike Hirt and his wife, Diane, Waverly, KS; her daughter, Lori Ann Bitts, Waverly, KS; her sister, Dorothy Foltz, Overland Park, KS; and fourteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Music was provided by Louise O'Neal and Cindy Foltz-See, organists, and Pam Ahring, soloist. Musical selections included 'Be Not Afraid', 'Jesus, Remember Me', 'On This Day, O'Beautiful Mother', 'Lord When You Come To the Seashore', and 'How Great Thou Art'. Casketbearers were Tyson Hirt, Rodney Hirt, Nathan Hirt, Scott Hirt, Travis Hirt, and Trent Hirt. Honorary casketbearers were Gene Hirt, Dude Hirt, Terry Hirt, Charlie Hirt, and Mike Hirt. A prayer service was held Monday, March 10, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the family receiving friends afterwards. "Ross Lamb 1901-2003 Funeral services for Ross Lamb were Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Coffel- Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, KS. Interment was in Battlefield Cemetery near Pleasanton. Mr. Lamb died March 3, 2003, at the age of 101 years, 4 months, and 14 days at his rural home near Kincaid, KS. Ross V. Lamb was born October 12, 1901, to James and Birdie (Everhart) Lamb on the Lamb family farm south and east of Pleasanton, KS. He went to school two years at Maple Grove School south of Pleasanton. Later his family moved to a farm south and west of Mapleton. Ross was united in marriage to Elsie O'Harah in June 1920. To this union, their only son, James F. Lamb, was born in 1925. Elsie preceded him in death in 1975 and James passed away in 1985. In 1977, Ross married Maude Ross. She preceded him in death. Other loved ones preceding him in death were his parents, James and Birdie Lamb; two brothers, Ray and Ted Lamb; and one sister, Gladys Stradley. His beloved grandson and wife, Bill and Sherilyn Lamb of rural Moran, KS, survive him. Also surviving him are his daughter-in-law, Margaret and her husband, Lester Shaw, Pleasanton, KS; four great-grandchildren, Barry Lamb, Moran, KS, Merril and Kenny Sue Lamb, Iola, KS, Kyla and Dayton Sutterby, Gas City, KS, and Kendra and Kyle Perry, Fort Scott, KS. His pride and joy were his great-great-grandchildren, Taelyn and Shaylee Sutterby, Kristin Lamb, and Andrew Perry, who could always bring a chuckle. Ross has two sisters-in-law, Helen Lamb, Ted's wife, Overland Park, KS, and Cloma Commons, Fort Scott, KS. Two stepsons, Darrell Ross and his wife, Betty, Humboldt, KS, and Willis Ross and his wife, Jessie, rural Moran, also survive him, as do his step- grandchildren, Larry Don, John, Charles, Sharon, Joan, and Jean Ross and their families, as well as sixteen step-great-grandchildren. Ross farmed all of his life. He lived more than fifty years in the rural Kincaid area. He was a member of the Mildred United Methodist Church. The family received friends on Monday, March 10, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mildred United Methodist Church. Hulcy, 78, will be held March 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Garnett with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Mildred L. Hulcy was born February 16, 1925, near Garnett, KS. She was the daughter of Roy J. and Myrtle (Teter) Ballard. She died on March 9, 2003, after a brief illness, at St. Joseph Hospital, Denver, CO. Mildred grew up in Anderson County attending country schools and graduated from Garnett High School in 1943. Mildred was a successful real estate broker in the Denver area since 1966. She was named Realtor of the Year of the Aurora Board of Realtors in 1978. Mildred was actively involved in selling real estate until her recent illness. Mildred was an active member of The Church at Parker, Parker, CO. Mrs. Hulcy was preceded in death by her parents, Roy J. and Myrtle Ballard. Mildred is survived by her daughter, Lynne Strawn, Parker, CO; her sons, Douglas and wife Julie, of Dallas, TX, and Bradley and wife Shari, Rochester Hills, MI; grandchildren: Kristi and husband Erik Muzzy, Troy, MI; Chad Hulcy, a student at Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC; and Alex Pennington, Dallas, TX; her brother, Hershyl Ballard and wife, Norma, Ottawa, KS; her sister, Gayla Corley and husband Grant of Westphalia, KS: and many nieces and nephews, and cousins. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons." "Robert L. 'Bob' Shields 1931-2003 A Celebration of Life Service for Robert L. 'Bob' Shields, 71, Ottawa, KS, was Thursday, March 13, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ottawa, with Rev. Henry A. Roberts, Jr. and Rev. Clifford E. Burke officiating. Mr. Shields donated his body to the University of Kansas Medical School, Department of anatomy and Cell Biology. Robert L. Shields was born September 1, 1931, at Ottawa, KS, the son of Ted and Dorothy (Bruce) Shields. He grew up on a farm outside Wellsville, KS, lived briefly in Paola, KS, following his marriage, and moved to Ottawa in 1959. He graduated from Wellsville High School with the Class of 1949. Following high school, he was involved in farming, and then worked for Sunflower Ordinance Works in DeSoto, KS. He was a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual Life in Ottawa for forty-five years. He achieved Chartered Life Underwriter in 1966. He served in the Naval Reserve. Bob was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder; Westminster Presbyterian Church Development Corporation, where he served as president and secretary; Greater Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors; Ottawa Rotary Club, where he was past president and trustee for the Ottawa Rotary Foundation; Ottawa Boy's Club, where he was co-chairman fundraiser; United Way Fund, where he served as chairman; Ottawa University Fund Raiser; Committee to Save the Auditorium; Ottawa Lodge #18, Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite of Lawrence; and Abdallah Temple of Overland Park. Bob and Melva Jane Folks were married September 20, 1954, at Wellsville, KS. Mr. Shields was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Dorothy Shields; and his grandson, Matthew. Bob is survived by his wife, Jane, of the home; his daughters, Julie Quinn, Grenada, West Indies, Janet Murphy, Jacksonville, FL, Joan Wiley, Derby, KS, and Lorie Weaver, Junction City, KS; his son, Dennis Shields, Wellsville, KS; his sister, Mona Murphy, Wellsville, KS; his grandchildren, Jacob, Ryan, Samantha, Andrew, Andrea, Alexandra, Brandon, Kathryn, Sarah, and Zachary; and many nieces and nephews.
