Anderson December 9, 1919-March 16, 2003 Mary M. Anderson, age 83, passed away Sunday, March 16, at Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett, KS. Mary Margaret was born December 9, 1919, to Anthony and Margaret (Nilges) Peine. She was raised with her three brothers and three sisters on a farm in rural eastern Anderson County. Mary attended Earnest School and graduated from Garnett High School in 1937. After graduation, she moved to Kansas City and was employed by the Jones Store as a retail buyer. Mary was united in marriage to Earl J. Anderson on June 12, 1948, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett. Returning to Garnett after her marriage in 1948, she was a loving wife and mother to her four children. She enjoyed cooking and growing house plants, especially African violets. Her love of the outdoors showed in the large flower and vegetable gardens she grew. Mary owned and managed a retail children’s clothing store in Garnett in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and she touched the lives of many young children by babysitting in her home for many years. Preceding her in death were her parents, Tony and Margaret Peine; two brothers, John (Virgil) Peine, Nyssa, OR, and Earl Peine, Raytown, MO; and two sisters, Rita Peine, Garnett, and Rose DeSchepper, Tracy, MN. Mary is survived by her husband, Earl, of the home; two sons and two daughters and their families, Ann and Jim Humbert, Tulsa, OK, Ed and Pat Anderson, Lenexa, KS, Mary and Dan Rockers, Garnett, and Jim and Chris Anderson, Olathe, KS; eight grandchildren and four great-grandsons, Jim and Kim Humbert and Jacob, Gardner, KS, Sandra and Daryl Chapman, Clint, Austin, and Blayne, Baldwin, KS, Nicole Anderson, Manhattan, KS, Sean Anderson, Lawrence, KS, Dustin Rockers, Garnett, Melanie Rockers, Topeka, KS, Erin Rockers, Emporia, KS, Dana Anderson, Garnett; and one sister Agnes Watkins, San Diego, CA. Funeral mass and wake service were held at Holy Angels Catholic Church at Garnett. Father George Matz and Father Tony Blaufuss officiated. Mass servers were Michael Hermreck, Alissa Miller, and Bryce Fritz. Lectors were granddaughters, Sandra Humbert Chapman and Melanie Rockers. Gift bearers were her four great-grandsons, Jacob Humbert, and Clint, Austin, and Blayne Chapman. Music was provided by Janice Foltz, soloist, and Sue Hardman, organist. Selections were ‘Come To Me’, ‘Prayer of St. Francis’, ‘On This Day O Beautiful Mother’, and ‘How Great Thou Art’. Mary was laid to rest in Holy Angels Cemetery at Garnett. Casketbearers were her eight grandchildren, Jim Humbert, Sandra Chapman, Nicole and Sean Anderson, Dustin, Melanie, and Erin Rockers, and Dana Anderson.” “Henry D. Flory 1909-2003 Funeral services for Henry D. Flory, 93, are Friday, April 4, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Willow Springs Old German Baptist Brethren Church. Interment is in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Grove, KS. Mr. Flory died at his daughter’s home on Tuesday, April 1. Henry D. Flory was born July 7, 1909, in Douglas County, KS, the son of Elmer L. and Mary Ellen (Montgomery) Flory. He had lived his entire life in Douglas County and was a farmer/dairyman. He was a member of Willow Springs Old German Baptist Church. Henry and Ruth Ellen Long were married February 11, 1933, in Rossville, IN. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2001. Mr. Flory is survived by his daughters, Norma Brubaker, Garnett, Marilyn Riffey, Westphalia, KS, and Donna Wade Wingert, Lawrence, KS; his son, Howard D. Flory, Eaton, OH; his brother, Arley Flory, Baldwin City, KS; twelve grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren. The family greeted friends on Thursday, April 3, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. Memorial contributions are suggested to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Association or Hospice Care of Douglas County and may be sent in care of the mortuary. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in the Kincaid Cemetery. Mrs. Carr died Monday, March 31, at Ransom Memorial Hospital, Ottawa, KS. Ethel Adeline Carr was born December 25, 1912, in Anderson County, KS, the daughter of Irl and Winfred (Clark) Smethers. She was a member of the former Bush City Baptist Church and the Greenfield H.D.U. Ethel was a homemaker. Ethel and John Carr were married October 6, 1934, at Selma, KS. Mrs. Smethers was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Kelsey; her parents, Irl and Winfred Smethers; her brothers, Irl Smethers and Harold Smethers; and her sister, Emma Belangy. Ethel is survived by her husband, John, Cherryvale Care Center, Cherryvale, KS: her sons, Elwyn Carr and his wife, Mary, Cherryvale, KS, and J.D. Carr and his wife, Donna, Garnett; her daughters, Charlotte Roberts and her husband, Earl, Greeley, KS, and Cheryl Crump and her husband, James, Hermantown, MN; her brother, Robert Lloyd, Louisburg, KS; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family received friends on Wednesday, April 2, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Research and left in care of the funeral home. Hartpence, 84, Ottawa, KS, were Monday, March 31, 2003, at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, with Rev. Dan Everly officiating. Interment was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mr. Hartpence died Wednesday, March 26, at his home. Ralph L. Hartpence was born April 3, 1918, at LeLoup, KS, the son of George and Sarah Belle (Jones) Hartpence. He was a lifelong Franklin County, KS, resident. Ralph started farming at an early age. During World War II, he worked at Sunflower Ammunition Plant in DeSoto. He was an automobile mechanic for George Royer Garage and Mock Motors in Ottawa. In 1949, he became employed with Cities Services Gas Company in Ottawa, retiring in 1980. He was a former member of Tauy Baptist Church, Franklin County, KS. Ralph and Frances Nevalee Van Valkenburg were married on November 7, 1940, at Paola, KS. She preceded him in death on June 30, 1998. On October 8, 2000, Ralph was united in marriage with Nona Lee Johnson at Miami, OK. Mr. Hartpence was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances Nevalee Hartpence; his great-granddaughter, Macy Donnell; his parents, George and Sarah Belle Hartpence; his brothers, Harry Hartpence and Carl Hartpence; and his sisters, Ruby Anderson, Lenore Scott, and Lucille Kristianson. Ralph is survived by his wife, Nona Lee Hartpence, of the home; his sons, Bob Hartpence, Tonganoxie, KS, and Ronnie Hartpence, Independence, KS; his daughters, Joan Yocum, Sarasota, WY, Sandra Reusch, Lawrence, KS, and Jeannie Gillette, Broken Arrow, OK; his stepsons, Daniel Wheeler, Omaha, NE, David Wheeler, Ottawa, KS, Darran Wheeler, Quenemo, KS, and Dennis Wheeler, Topeka, KS; his stepdaughters, Lynn Hutchinson, Princeton, KS, Barbara Wheeler, Topeka, KS, and Debra Tatum, Mansfield, TX; his brother, George Hartpence, Lawrence, KS; thirty-three grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
