Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Goodrich Cemetery, Goodrich, KS. Military Honor Guard was provided by V.F.W. Memorial Post #6397 and American Legion Fuller-Thompson Post #48, Garnett. Mr. Byerley died Thursday, April 3, at his home. Orlan William Byerley was born February 20, 1948, at Davenport, IA, the son of Warren and Helen (Kraft) Byerley. Orlan spent most of his lifetime in Linn County, having attended Centerville Grade School and graduating from Blue Mound High School with the Class of 1966. Following school, he entered the United States Army and served with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. During his time of service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service w/two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Air Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and a Purple Heart. After his discharge from the military, he worked for Bill John Construction of Mound City, KS. He later went to work for P & M Mining Company in Linn County and in New Mexico. He was a heavy equipment operator. He then worked for a time for Donahue Trucking, both as a driver and on the farm. Orlan and Jeanette Schneider were married in 1968. Their marriage later ended in divorce. Mr. Byerley was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Helen Byerley; his infant son, Ward; his sisters, Joyce Weide and Darlene Byerley; his nephew, Adam Byerley; and his brother-in-law, Tony Walters. Orlan is survived by his daughter, Krista Shannon and her husband, John, Brick, NJ, Sara Jo Dykes and her husband, Brian, Garnett, and Lacy Byerley, Garnett; his son, Dane Byerley, Garnett; his sisters, Sharon Walters, Osawatomie, KS, and Shirley Sawyer, Lawrence, KS, and his brother, Roger Byerley, Kincaid, KS. Musical selections included ‘Once In A While’ by Billy Dean and ‘Fishin’ In The Dark’ by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Casketbearers were Brad Bell, Matt Byerley, Kelly Nickell, Jeff Byerley, Jim Hampton, and Richard Walters. He will be missed by his family and his many friends. The family received friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Sunday before the services. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Evan Sumners Activity Center, Parker, KS, and may be left in care of the funeral home.
