Mr. Howarter died Sunday, January 5, 2003, in Topeka.” “Byron Faden 1928-2002 Memorial services for Byron Faden, 74, Trenton, MO, formerly of Ottawa, KS, were Saturday, January 4, 2003, at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, with Rev. Daryl Mayfield officiating. Pete Cearfoss delivered the eulogy. Inurnment will be in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, KS, at a later date. Mr. Faden died December 25, 2002, at his home. Byron Faden was born April 12, 1928, at Richmond, KS, the son of John and Edith (Funk) Faden. He graduated from Princeton High School with the Class of 1946 and from Mohler Barger College in 1949. Byron served in the United States Navy from 1946 until his discharge in 1948. Most of that time was spent in the South Pacific. Byron was a longtime resident of Ottawa, moving to Trenton, MO, in 1986. He was a barber in Ottawa for thirty years. He left barbering and started working at Budge’s Sport Center in Ottawa and, later, he and three friends bought the business. In 1986, he sold his part of the business and moved to Trenton. He was then manager of the Riverside Country Club for two years and worked at the Elks Lodge for two years. In 1990, he became an antique dealer in Jamesport, MO, and operated Byron’s Antiques in the Balcony House Mall. He was a member of the Riverside Country Club and Trenton Lodge #801, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. While in Ottawa, Byron coached Babe Ruth league baseball for several years and followed Ottawa High School and Ottawa University athletics. He was honored for his loyal support of the Ottawa Braves during their 1998 Hall of Fame Ceremony. Byron and Carolyn Pennel were married November 7, 1948, at Ottawa. Mr. Faden was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edith Faden; and his sister, Rebecca Shelden. Byron is survived by his wife, Carolyn Faden, Trenton, MO; his brother, Charles Faden, Holiday Island, AK; and his nieces, Janet Blachly, Olathe, KS, Pamela Mayes, Divide, CO, and Rexann Dunn, Bailey, CO. The family received friends on Saturday afternoon, January 4, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation, in care of the funeral home. Dengel and Son Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.” “Charles B. Johnson 1937-2002 Private family memorial services and visitation for Charles B. Johnson, 65, Garnett, were Thursday, January 2, 2003, at the family home at 216 West Fifth Avenue, Garnett, with Robert Meuller, Second Counselor, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, leading the service. Mr. Johnson died December 27 at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Kansas City, MO. Charles B. Johnson was born March 23, 1937, at Mitchell, SD, the son of Charles B. and Thelma H. (Spratford) Johnson. He served with and retired from the United States Coast Guard. Charles and Rose Rippy were married May 26, 1962, at Hood River, OR. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Charles B. and Thelma H. Johnson. Charles is survived by his wife, Rose Johnson, Garnett; his sons, Stanley Johnson, Independence, MO, Charles Johnson, Portland, OR, Christopher Johnson, serving with the United States Army in Virginia, and Daniel A. Johnson, Garnett; his daughter, Cynthia Ware, Portland, OR; his brother, Ronald L. Johnson, Seattle, WA; his sisters, Patricia Hohbach, Mt. Vernon, SD, Bernette Williams, Chico, CA, Anita Geistlinger, Vancouver, WA, and Sharon M. Goetz, Portland, OR; and eight grandchildren. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” Page 3, Column 3: “Catherine A. Dieker 1904-2002 Funeral Mass for Catherine A. Dieker, 98, Upper Arlington, OH, formerly of Westphalia, KS, was Friday, January 3, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Westphalia, with her nephew, Father Jim Dieker, as celebrant. Interment was in St. Teresa Cemetery, Westphalia. Mrs. Dieker died December 31, 2002, at First Community Village, Upper Arlington, OH. Catherine A. Dieker was born July 24, 1904, at Westphalia, the daughter of Gustave and Katherine (Stevens) Weber. She was baptized at St. Teresa Church and attended school in Westphalia and Garnett. Catherine and Lawrence T. Dieker were married on May 1, 1923, at Westphalia. They were happily married for fifty-eight years until the death of Lawrence T. in 1981. Before she was married, Catherine worked as a salesperson for Cayat Dry Goods Company in Westphalia. After her marriage, she worked for many years as a bookkeeper for the family business. They ran a garage in Westphalia, and then in Tampa, KS. Later, they farmed in Tampa, where they lived from 1929 until 1955. In 1955, Catherine and Lawrence T. sold their farm at Tampa and returned to Westphalia where they farmed until 1970. At this time, they retired and lived in town in Westphalia and later in Garnett. During her years in Westphalia and Tampa, Catherine was active in Altar Society and Royal Neighbors. She was an active member of St. Teresa Catholic Church in Westphalia and Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Tampa. In 1996, Catherine moved to Upper Arlington, OH, where her last few years were spent at First Community Village, near her family. She enjoyed her visits from family and friends, playing cards with her great-grandchildren and getting mail from Kansas friends. Mrs. Dieker was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence T. Dieker, in 1981; her parents, Gustave and Katherine Weber; and two brothers, Bill Weber and George Weber. Catherine will be sadly missed by her two sons and their spouses, Kenneth and Arlene Dieker, Santa Rosa, CA, and Larry and Marsha Dieker, Upper Arlington, OH; her eight grandchildren and their spouses and eighteen great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews, and good friends. Music was provided by Jeanne Antram, organist and soloist. Musical selections included ‘Old Rugged Cross’, ‘Faith Of Our Fathers’, ‘How Great Thou Art’, and ‘On Eagle’s Wings’. Casketbearers were Douglas Dieker, Larry Dieker, Thomas Dieker, Frank Tastove, Robert Tastove, and Ronald Tastove. A Wake Service was held Thursday, January 2, at 7:00 p.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Teresa Catholic Church or Holy Angels Church Building Renovation Fund.
