Deaton 1911-2003 Funeral services for Emory W. Deaton, 91, Richmond, KS, were Friday, April 4, 2003, at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, KS, with Pastor Rick Randall, Sr., Centropolis Baptist Church, officiating. Interment was in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, KS. Mr. Deaton died Tuesday, April 1, at Richmond Care Center, Richmond, KS. Emory W. Deaton was born September 23, 1911, at Leduc, Alberta, Canada, the son of Oscar and Rosa (Kelly) Deaton. He spent his early childhood growing up in the wilderness area of Canada. In 1926, at the age of 15, he moved with his family to a farm northwest of Ottawa. He moved into Ottawa on April 3, 1998, and to Richmond in early 2003. He attended rural schools, including Liberty Rural School near Centropolis. Emory was a self-employed farmer for forty years, hauling milk to Bennett’s Creamery, Ottawa, from about 1930 until about 1970. Emory and Edith May Mathias were married October 4, 1951, in rural Ottawa. Mr. Deaton was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Rosa Deaton; and his sister, Katie Goodman. Emory is survived by his wife, Edith May Deaton, Richmond. The family received friends on Thursday, April 3, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Centropolis Baptist Church and may be left in care of the funeral home. Dengel and Son Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.” Page 3, Column 3: “James W. Eckard 1938-2003 James W. Eckard, 65, Princeton, KS, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at his home. Private family services will be held at a later date. The family will meet with friends at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, KS, on Thursday, April 10, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. James W. Eckard was born February 8, 1938, at Kansas City, KS, the son of Cecil and Dora (Griffith) Eckard. He grew up in Kansas City, KS, and graduated from Argentine High School with the Class of 1956. During his military service with the United States Air Force from 1956-1960, he lived in Texas for two years, returning to Kansas City before moving to Princeton in 1967. He was presently employed as lead crew chief in plant maintenance for American Airlines, where he had worked since 1967. He had previously worked for Trans World Airlines until the company buyout. He was a member of Ottawa Lodge #18, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite Consistory of Lawrence, and Abdullah Shrine Club of Kansas City, KS. James and Nancy Larrick were married on February 5, 1959, at Kansas City, KS. Mr. Eckard was preceded in death by his daughter, Penny Eckard; his son, Daniel Eckard; and his parents, Cecil and Dora Eckard. James is survived by his wife, Nancy, of the home; his son, James S. Eckard, Ottawa, KS; his sisters, LaDonna Wade, Edwardsville, KS, and Margie Nagel, Des Moines, IA; his grandchildren, Jennille Scrutchfield, Nikki Reyes, Dylan Eckard, and Kara Eckard, all of Ottawa, KS; and his great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Scrutchfield and Alex Reyes, both of Ottawa, KS. The family suggests memorials to Shriner’s Hospital, which may be left in care of the funeral home.
