Mr. Brown died Saturday, April 12, at Presbyterian Manor, Emporia, KS. John W. Brown was born December 10, 1916, at Ottawa, KS, the son of Sam B. and Bessie May (Steinman) Brown. He was a lifetime resident of Waverly. John joined the United States Army during World War II and served as an X-ray technician with the 12th General Hospital. He worked for the Kansas Highway Department for thirty-seven years, retiring in 1977. After retirement, John worked at Russ’s Service Station for several years. On February 16, 2000, he entered Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Waverly because of health problems and last summer moved to Presbyterian Manor in Emporia. John was a member of American Legion Hull-Cromwell Post #119 at Waverly and the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Emporia. John and Dorothy J. Whiteford were married July 26, 1948, at Benton, AR. She preceded in death on August 10, 1967. John and Nina L. Kent Hobart were married May 23, 1971, at Garnett, KS. Mr. Brown was also preceded in death by his son, Lyle D. Brown, in 1999; his parents, Sam B. and Bessie May Brown; his brother, C.R. ‘Dick’ Brown; and his sister, Marjorie Dyer. John is survived by his wife, Nina, Waverly, KS; his sons, Clyde W. Brown, Waverly, KS, and Kent Hobart and his wife, Nedra, Shawnee, KS; his daughters, Janeen Walker and her husband, Steve, Overland Park, KS, Cindy Ecclefield and her husband, Gary, Garnett, and Christy Peters and her husband, David, Independence, KS; his brothers, Sam Brown, Village Mills, TX, and Ralph Brown, Mullinville, KS; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family received friends on Monday, April 14, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to charity of the donor’s choice. Jones Funeral Home, Waverly, KS, was in charge of arrangements.” Page 3, Column 3: Kenneth V. ‘Ken’ Morrow 1928-2003 Funeral services for Kenneth V. ‘Ken’ Morrow, 74, Ottawa, KS, were Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, with Rev. Henry A. Roberts, Jr., officiating. Interment was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mr. Morrow died Thursday, April 10, at his home. Kenneth V. Morrow was born August 13, 1928, at Burlington, KS, the son of Ross and Ethel (Hanson) Morrow. He was a graduate of Wellsville High School with the Class of 1945. He was a lifelong Franklin County, KS, resident, having lived in Ottawa since 1975. Previous to that, he lived in Princeton and Williamsburg. Kenneth served in the United States Army as a medic during the Korean War from May 1948 to October 1948, and was discharged in January 1950, receiving Army of Occupation Medals for serving in Germany (exclusive of Berlin), Berlin, Japan, and Korea. He re-enlisted as a Specialist 3 on August 16, 1951, returning to Japan from December 1951 to January 1953. After that, he returned to Fort Sam Houston and was honorably discharged on August 15, 1955. He also served full time in the National Guard from February 1974 to March 1988, as Sergeant 1st Class E-7, in Ottawa and retired from Topeka. In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, Kenneth worked as a mechanic for Price Motors. He worked for Ottawa Steel in the mid-to-late 1960’s as a driver, than from the early 1970’s, he was a welder. Also in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, he worked for the Franklin County Highway Department, and was a projectionist at Plaza Theater and Hillcrest Drive-In, all in Ottawa. Kenneth was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 and Aerie Lodge #2700, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ottawa, and American Legion Post #1 of Topeka, KS. Kenneth and Carolee Anderson were married August 1, 1957, at Ottawa. Mr. Morrow was preceded in death by his wife, Carolee Morrow; his parents, Ross and Ethel Morrow; his brother, Roger Morrow; an infant brother, Ronald Lynn Morrow; and his sister, Mary Ann Moherman. Kenneth is survived by his daughter, Debra K. Morrow, Richmond, KS; his sister, Gloria Leecy, Ottawa, KS: and his brother, Richard ‘Dick’ Morrow, Kansas City, KS.
