Magee 1921-2003 Funeral services for Bertha C. Magee, 81, Pierce City, MO, were Monday, May 5, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, KS, with Rev. David George officiating. Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Williamsburg, KS. Mrs. Magee died Wednesday, April 30, at Cox-Monett Hospital, Monett, MO. Bertha C. Magee was born September 18, 1921, at Ottawa, KS, the daughter of Carl and Elsie Elizabeth (Smith) Richardson. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the Class of 1941. She lived in Ottawa, Wichita, and Garnett before moving to Monett in October 1995. For thirty-seven and one-half years, she conducted placement interviews for the Kansas State Employment Service. Bertha was a twenty-year member of Business and Professional Women and a forty-five-year member and Past Noble Grand of Hazel Rebekah Lodge #175, both of Ottawa. Bertha and Ralph M. Loyd were married November 1965, in Ottawa. He preceded her in death. On March 31, 1987, she was united in marriage with Richard Magee at Wichita. Mrs. Magee was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph M. Loyd, on December 3, 1986; and her parents, Carl and Elsie Elizabeth Richardson. Bertha is survived by her husband, Richard Magee, Pierce City, Mo; her brother, Reed Richardson, Garnett; her sisters, Madge C. Womack, Midwest City, OK, Ada E. Welton, Lutz, FL, and Mazie F. Maxey, Raytown, MO; and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends on Sunday, May 4, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. George Pasley officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mr. Pretzer died Thursday, May 1, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO. Earl Junior Pretzer was born July 20, 1920, at Elmdale, KS, the son of Earl A. and Frances (Coverdale) Pretzer. He had lived in Garnett since 1946 and worked for the City of Garnett Street Department. He was injured on the job in 1967. Earl enjoyed gardening, building dog houses, and restoring children’s wagons. Earl and Velma Martin were married September 4, 1949, at Garnett. Mr. Pretzer was preceded in death by his parents, Earl A. and Frances Pretzer; two brothers, Robert and Donald Pretzer; and one sister, Carlotta Riley. Earl is survived by his wife, Velma, of the home; his sons, Willis Pretzer and his wife, Vicki, Warsaw, MO, Glen Pretzer and his wife, Judy, Kalamazoo, MI, Carl Pretzer and his wife, Velda, Oklahoma City, OK, and Kevin Pretzer and his wife, Tracie, Welda, KS; his daughters, Lee Ann Simon and her husband, Larry, Houston, TX, and Sue Shrader and her husband, Charlie, Austin, TX; twenty-one grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were Drew Pretzer, Graham Pretzer, Jason Pretzer, Justin Pretzer, Kyle Pretzer, and Ethan Shrader. Guber, 83, Garnett, were Thursday, May 1, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Garnett Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Phil Rhoades officiating. Interment was in Cherry Mound Cemetery, Westphalia, KS. Alfred M. Guber was born May 30, 1919, at Regia, Latvia, Russia, the son of Fredrick and Olga (Schemania) Guber. He had lived in Anderson County for more than fifty years. He served with the United States Army. Alfred was a permanent duty employee at the Garnett National Guard Armory. He farmed for a few years after retiring from the service. He was a member of the Garnett Church of the Nazarene. Alfred and Iris P. Marrs were married November 9, 1944, at Little Rock, AR. Mr. Guber is survived by his wife, Iris, of the home; his daughter, Betty Lutz and her husband, Jim, Westphalia, KS; two grandsons, Jeff Lutz and his wife, Victoria, Westphalia, KS, and Kevin Lutz and his wife, Charlotte, Garnett; his brothers, Frank Guber, Medford, OR, and Harvey Guber, Salem, OR; his sister, Mary Jane Myers, Stafford, VA; and three great-grandchildren. Music was provided by Rhonda Rhoades, organist, and Dan Michael, vocalist. Musical selections included ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness’, ‘Old Rugged Cross’ and ‘How Great Thou Art’. Casketbearers were Jeff Lutz, Kevin Lutz, Norman Elliss, Glenn Mudd, Don Nungesser, and Tom Young. The family received friends on Wednesday, April 30, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Harrington 1931-2003 Memorial services for Maurice C. Harrington, 72, Garnett, are Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gale E. Mack and Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Mr. Harrington died Wednesday, April 30, at his home. Maurice C. Harrington was born February 10, 1931, on the family farm in Sun City, KS, the son of F.C. and Edith (Lemkey) Harrington. He graduated from Pratt High School in 1949 and attended Pratt Community College for one year before he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was a staff sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1954, serving in Korea for fourteen months. Maury and Joan Williams were married on December 21, 1956, in Pratt. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1958 with a degree in Agriculture Education. In 1960, Maury moved to Garnett and was the Agriculture Agent in Anderson County until his retirement in 1991. After his retirement, his hobby was working with Paul Phares at P & H Custom Sawing and Lumber, cutting lumber for landowners. He also continued to make woodworking projects especially for his children. Mr. Harrington was preceded in death by his parents, F.C. and Edith Harrington; and his brother, Ed Harrington. Maury is survived by his wife, Joan, of the home; his sons, Jay and wife, Diane, Garnett, and Brad, Lawrence, KS; his daughters, Cindy Foxx and husband, Bryan, Fort Scott, KS, and Kathi Emling and husband, Randy, Burlington, KS; his grandchildren, Amber and Ethan Harrington, Olathe, KS, Dacia Keller, Sylvan Grove, KS, Shanna Albright, Parsons, KS, Tara and Todd Foxx, Fort Scott, Cheris Harrington, Auburn, NE, and Shelbi, Sydni, and Sophi Emling, Burlington; and his sister, Lavon Bissantz, Wichita, KS. The family will greet friends following the memorial service. In leiu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the memorial fund, the Anderson County 4-H Scholarship Fund, which may be sent to the Anderson County 4-H Council or left in care of the funeral home.
