May 28, 2003 The ADVOCATE Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 7, No. 43 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 5, Column 2: “Jimmie Boyd ‘Jim’ Logan 1933-2003 Big Foot, Bear, and Brutus are among the hundreds of family and friends who mourn the death of a truly great man, Jimmie Boyd Logan. They were three of Jim’s companions on his Linn County ranch—his favorite goose, his beloved Labrador, and the lead buffalo among his herd that once numbered thirty-five. Jim was born in Centerville, KS, February 2, 1933, the tenth of twelve children born to Emma Elizabeth and Boyd Brown Logan. He attended Georgetown and Keokuk one-room schoolhouses in Linn County and graduated from Parker High School in 1952, where he set numerous records in track and field, football, basketball, and other sports. His exploits on the athletic field were legendary, as was his reputation for hard work, honesty, and an enormous heart. Jim worked for more than thirty years (1961-1995) for the Lynn Insurance Group, founded by his close friend, Gene Lynn. While working for Lynn Insurance, Jim purchased an apartment house in the Plaza District of Kansas City and provided housing for many UMKC students. Along the way Jim’s reputation for physical fitness made him a familiar figure among the residents of the Plaza District. He was active in bowling, golf, marathons, modeling, boxing, and fishing, which he enjoyed with his children and grandchildren. Jim married Wanda Robinson on August 16, 1952. They established a home in Kansas City, KS, where Jim worked for Proctor and Gamble and Fairbanks Morse. Jim and Wanda had five children, Nancy Miller, Enid, OK, Stephen Logan, Paola, KS, Connie Cleek, Louisburg, KS, Jeffrey Logan, Olathe, KS, and Jamie Allen, Tampa, FL. On February 12, 1983, Jim married Kim Waite, who was also an employee of the Lynn Insurance Group. When his father died in 1982, Jim purchased the family farm in Linn County where he and Kim spent every weekend working to prepare the farm for the day when they would make their home on the same site where he was born. They moved to the farm in 1990, into a new house which they built to replace the original farmhouse. Their buffalo herd was started with Brutus and eventually grew to thirty-five. At the time of his death, the herd was down to two. Jim knew every pond and creek in Linn County and enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren to fish and enjoy nature as much as he did. If the fish were not biting, a water fight in the creek kept everyone entertained. Jim is survived by his wife, Kim; his brothers, Clyde Logan, Elwood, KS, and Howard Logan, Centerville; his sisters, Olive Kline, Garnett, Betty Seitz, Parker, KS, Lorene Middleton, Watsonville, CA, Nine Kirchberger, Litchfield, CT, and Doris Fisher, Maryville, MO. He is also survived by his five children; ten grandchildren, Michael Lemons, Josh and Lindsay Cleek, Stephen, Jacob, and Jessica Logan, Katie and Kyle Miller, and Brooks and Paige Allen; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Emma Logan; one brother, Glenn; and three sisters, Ina, Emma, and Patsy. Jim died in his sleep on the morning of May 20, 2003, at the Village West Nursing Center in Ottawa, KS. Visitation was from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 23, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Garnett. His memorial service was conducted by the Rev. Nancy Snyder at the Centerville Community Church in Centerville, KS. Interment was in the Centerville Cemetery within a few hundred yards of the family home. Music was provided by Nancy Ewing, pianist, and Jeanne Kautt, soloist. Musical selections included ‘When It’s All Said and Done’, ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain’, and ‘You’re Still You’ by Josh Groban. Casketbearers were Mike Lemons, Josh Cleek, Kyle Miller, Stevie Logan, Jacob Logan, and Brent Niles. A memorial fund has been established at the Centerville State Bank, P.O. Box 5, Centerville, KS 66014. Contributions will go to the Alzheimer Unit at Village West Nursing Home in Ottawa, the Midland Hospice in Ottawa, and the Evan Sumners Community Center in Parker, located in the former Parker High School where Jim graduated. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” Transcribed for Anderson County Kansas USGENWEB By: Lulu B. Nixon
