Carter 1918-2003 Funeral services for Lois W. Carter, 85, Garnett, were Thursday, June 5, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church, Garnett, with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Carter died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Richmond Care Center, Richmond, KS. Lois W. Carter was born January 10, 1918, at Selma, KS, the daughter of John Thomas and Ethel Mae (Harvey) Steele. She grew up in the Selma and Kincaid areas. She graduated from Garnett High School with the Class of 1936. Lois and Elliot Carter were married January 9, 1937, at Yates Center, KS. After their marriage, they lived in Wichita, KS, and New Mexico, later returning to Kansas, where they made their home on a farm near Harris in 1958. After Elliot passed away, she moved to Harris in 1976, then to Garnett in 1990. She worked as a retail clerk at Kingsolver Drug Store in Garnett. Lois was a former member of the Harris Methodist Church, Woman’s Society of Christian Service, and Harris EHU. Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Elliot Carter; her parents, John Thomas and Ethel Mae Steele; her brother, Melvin Steele; and her sister, Ione Schuster. Lois is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Cathy and Wayne Maloney, Harrisonville, MO, and Pat and Dale ‘Buzz’ Reichard, Garnett; her grandchildren, Alan Harris, Harrisonville, MO, Bryan Reichard, Garnett, Amy Reichard, Iola, KS; her great-grandchildren, Beth and Chrissy Harris, Harrisonville, MO; and her sister, Margie Welsh, Garnett. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, organist, and Pam Ahring, soloist. Musical selections included ‘An Evening Prayer’, ‘Take My Hand, Precious Lord’, and ‘From Where You Are’ by Josh Groban. Paul Massey, pianist, played ‘In The Mood’. Casketbearers were Alan Harris, Brian Porter, Curtis Porter, Ross Porter, Bryan Reichard, Robert Steele, and Ronnie Welsh. Honorary casketbearers were Bob Kingsolver, Delmar MacArthur, Trevor Shannon, Howard Thompson, Bill Valentine, and Gerald Welsh. The family received friends on Wednesday, June 4, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to Good Shepherd Hospice or Richmond Care Center, which may be left in care of the funeral home. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” “Bernice Bartlett Smith 1908-2003 Graveside services and interment for Bernice Bartlett Smith, 95, Richmond, KS, were Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka, KS, with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, June 4, at Anderson County Hospital. Bernice Bartlett Smith was born January 22, 1908, at Richmond, KS, the daughter of Benjamin Riley and Florence Grace (Taylor) Smith. She grew up in Richmond, KS, graduating from Richmond High School in 1926. Bernice and Paul Herbert Smith were married April 25, 1930, at Richmond. She lived in Paola before moving to Topeka, where she lived until 1988 when she entered the nursing home in Richmond, KS. She worked as a seamstress in Topeka, than later on was a homemaker. Bernice was a member of University United Methodist Church, Topeka. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Herbert Smith on March 16, 1965; her parents, Benjamin Riley and Florence Grace Bartlett; three brothers and two sisters. Bernice is survived by her sister, Marjorie Ahring and her husband, Fred, Sr., Garnett; and many nieces and nephews. The family received friends on Friday, June 6, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to Richmond Care Center.
