Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Kyle died January 7 at Arkhaven Assisted Living, Garnett. Edna M. Kyle was born July 26, 1930, at Greeley, KS, the daughter of Edward N. and Alice H. (Perkinson) Scates. She worked as a nurse’s aide in the kitchen at area nursing homes, including Arkhaven at Garnett and Moran Nursing Home, in addition to Anderson County Hospital. She also worked at the Nutrition Center with the Meals on Wheels program for five years. Edna and Chester L. Kyle were married October 2, 1952, at Lovington, NM. Mrs. Kyle was preceded in death by her husband, Chester L. Kyle; her parents, Edward N. and Alice H. Scates; and a sister, Betty Lou Helms. Edna is survived by her sons, James Allen Kyle, Garnett, and Vernon Dale Kyle, Garnett; her daughter, Aletha May McTheeney, Fort Scott, KS; her brother, Duane Edward Scates, Rantoul, KS; her sister, Emma R. Ponder, Iberia, MO; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Recorded music by Tennessee Ernie Ford was played. Musical selections included ‘The Old Rugged Cross’, ‘How Great Thou Art’, and ‘Nearer My God to Thee’. Casketbearers were Kevin Barnett, Scott Chadwick, John Helms, Earl Roper, Eugene Roper, and Duane Scates, Jr. The family received friends on Thursday, January 9, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nutrition Center Meals on Wheels program, which may be left in care of the funeral home. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” Page 3, Column 2: “Madeline Sutton Scheuerman 1916-2003 Funeral services for Madeline Sutton Scheuerman, 86, Garnett, were Saturday, January 11, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Garnett, with Rev. Gale E. Mack officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Scheuerman died January 7 at Anderson County Hospital. Madeline Sutton Scheuerman was born September 20, 1916, in Linn County, KS, the daughter of Earl and Winnie (Burris) Holderman. She graduated from Garnett High School with the Class of 1936. Madeline was a lifetime resident of Garnett and the surrounding area. Mrs. Scheuerman and her first husband, Reginald Sutton, co-owned and operated Stockton-Sutton Furniture Store in Garnett. After Reginald died in 1965, she sold her share of the business to Sam Stockton. She worked for many years at several local businesses, including J.C. Penney and the City of Garnett. She was a tireless volunteer to countless clubs, committees, and organizations including Chapter Y, P.E.O. sisterhood, where she had served as past president and in other offices and was recognized as a Golden Girl at the P.E.O. state convention last spring for her fifty years of membership; First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Magdalene Circle; Delphian Chapter #309, Order of the Eastern Star, where she held many offices and was Past Matron of Delphian Chapter and Past Grand Ruth of the Grand Chapter of Kansas; Sunset Garden Club; Kansas Association of Garden Clubs, where she held a life membership; American Red Cross; PRIDE Committee, where she was the first chairman; Pieces and Patches Quilt Guild, where she was one of the founders of the organization; Garnett Public Library Board; Creative Study Club; AARP, where she was vice president; and Garnett Housing Authority, where she was chairman and instrumental in the establishment of Parkside Place I and II. She, along with Dr. C.B. Harris, was selected as one of the Grand Marshals of the 1986 Christmas parade. She and Claude were members of the founding committee of the Garnett Senior Center. Madeline also was a Past Mid-East District Director of Garden Clubs. Madeline and Reginald Sutton were married on February 26, 1939, at Garnett. He died March 18, 1965. She then married Rev. Claude Scheuerman on November 22, 1969, at Garnett. He died on October 18, 1998. Mrs. Scheuerman was preceded in death by her first husband, Reginald Sutton; her second husband, Rev. Claude Scheuerman; her parents, Earl and Winnie Holderman; and one brother, Wayne Holderman. Madeline is survived by her nephew, Richard Holderman and his wife, Lucille, Centerville, KS; her nieces, Carol Bratton and her husband, Richard, Osawatomie, KS, Sharon Sumner and her husband, Butch, Garnett, and Connie Snyder and her husband, Jim, Osawatomie, KS; her brothers, Lee Holderman and his wife, Maxine, Parker, KS, and Lester ‘Pete’ Holderman, Garnett; and sister-in-law, Juanita Holderman, Parker, KS. Music was provided by Rev. Dennis Matthews, organist, and Nathan Young and Sheryl Urquhart, vocalist. Musical selections included ‘On Eagles’s Wings’, ‘In The Garden’, and ‘Amazing Grace’. Casketbearers were Dale Bratton, Danny Bratton, Chris Holderman, Rich Holderman, Jason Young, Nathan Young, and Jason Sumner. Gary Benjamin officiating. The eulogy was delivered by Dennis and Darren Howarter. Interment was in Lone Elm Cemetery. Mr. Howarter died Sunday, January 5, at Topeka. Claron Howarter was born October 15, 1911, at Lone Elm, KS, the son of Glen and Eunice (Taylor) Howarter. He graduated from Kincaid High School with the Class of 1930. He lived his entire life in Lone Elm except for the past two and one half years when he lived in Topeka due to failing health. He was a member of the Lone Elm Methodist Church. He was a member of the school board for twelve years and had driven a school bus for about twelve years. He had also served as a board member for the Area Council on Aging. Claron quilted numerous quilts and loved fishing, his yard and gardening. Claron and Evelyn Lord were married October 3, 1934, at Moran, KS. They lived near Lone Elm where Claron farmed and operated a dairy farm, as well as raising pork and poultry. For several years, he sold watermelons and popcorn from his garden. Mr. Howarter was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Lord, on December 31, 1995; his parents, Glen and Eunice Howarter; and one sister, Blanche Badders. Claron is survived by his son, Dean Howarter and his wife, Linda, Monticello, IL; his daughters, Phyllis Wright and her husband, Roger, San Angelo, TX, Linda Donaldson and her husband, Martin, Topeka, KS, and Louise Radcliff and her husband, Rick, Topeka, KS; his brothers, Ivan Howarter, Escondido, CA, Wayne Howarter, Welda, KS, and Wendell Howarter, Mesa, AZ; his sister, Wanda Holmes, Garnett; his ten grandchildren, Deanna McCulley, Danette Howarter, Dennis Howarter, Darren Howarter, Mark Wright, David Wright, Carolyn Townsend, Valerie Nelson, Eric Donaldson, and Kelly Donaldson; eighteen great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Music was provided by Jon Covault, pianist. Congregational hymns were ‘What A Friend We have In Jesus’ and ‘In The Garden’. Casketbearers were Eric Donaldson, Kelly Donaldson, Darren Howarter, Dennis Howarter, David Wright, and Mark Wright. Honorary casketbearers were Danette Howarter, Deanna McCulley, Valerie Nelson, and Carolyn Townsend. The family received friends on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Lone Elm Community Building. Memorial contributions may be made to Lone Elm Community Building or Plaza West (Topeka) Therapeutic Recreational Department.
