Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Hawkins died Sunday, June 22, at Anderson County Hospital Long Term Care, Garnett. Merle Estelene Hawkins was born November 11, 1913, at Elmdale, KS, the daughter of Fred O. and Nettie Frances (Harder) Pracht. She grew up in the Elk community, near Elmdale. She attended schools at Elk, Elmdale, and Cottonwood Falls. Merle was a homemaker and a member of First Christian Church. She was also a member of the Earnest HDU and the Sunset Garden Club, where she held many offices. Merle loved to play bridge and pitch, and belonged to many clubs. She was an excellent seamstress and made doll clothes for dolls given at Christmas to children. She also made quilts and afghans for her daughters and grandchildren, as well as other handwork for family and friends. She especially enjoyed her pet dog, Toby, and cat, Kitty. Merle and Richard E. Hawkins were married December 9, 1936, at Cottonwood Falls, KS. Mrs. Hawkins was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Hawkins on October 30, 1994; her parents, Fred O. and Nettie Frances Pracht; and her sister, Marjorie M. Hunt, on January 13, 2003. Merle is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Dale and Don Setter, Olathe, KS, and Joyce and Roger Hastert, Garnett; her grandchildren, Sheryl Cronenwett, Connie Feeney, Rick Setter, Brad Hastert, Bryan Hastert, and Steven Hastert; her great-grandchildren, Courtney Cronenwett, Derek Cronenwett, Addison Feeney, Regan Hastert, and Brent Hastert; and her brother, Wayne Pracht, Westpahlia, KS. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, organist, and Rev. Gary Benjamin, soloist. Musical selections included ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ and ‘In The Garden’. Casketbearers were F.J. Cronenwett, Brad Hastert, Steven Hastert, Bryan Hastert, Kirk Foutts, and Rick Setter. Honorary casketbearers were Johnny Ray Benjamin, David Pracht, Albert Riley, Norman Dawson, Fred Pracht, and Sam Stockton. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial chapel was in charge of arrangements.” “Arlis Vandy Smiley 1930-2003 Graveside services for Arlis Vandy Smiley, 73, Butler, MO, were Friday, June 27, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dederick, MO, with Pastor David Carmichael officiating. Mr. Smiley died Sunday, June 22, at Bates County Memorial Center, Butler, MO, after an extended illness. Arlis Vandy Smiley was born February 4, 1930, at Omaha, AR, the son of Jessie Lee and Mary Jane (Dixon) Smiley. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He had a variety of occupations. Arlis had previously lived in Wichita, KS, Rush, KY, and Kincaid, KS, before moving to Butler, MO, where he had lived for the past seventeen years. Arlis and Ida Jane Vincen were married on August 11, 1956, at Walker, MO. She preceded him in death on April 12, 1963. He later married Brenda Taylor in 1982. She survives in Oklahoma. Mr. Smiley was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Lee and Mary Jane Smiley; and his brothers, Seth, Robert, Ray, and Alvin Smiley. Arlis is also survived by his daughters, Frankie Chapman, Colony, KS, Eunice Kay Blount and her husband, Jefferson City, MO, Daisy Smiley and Iva Smiley, both of Butler, MO; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his brother Alfred Smiley, Wichita, KS; his sister, Margaret White, Humboldt, KS; and several nieces and nephews. Deaton, 92, Richmond, KS, were Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, KS, with Pastor Rick Randall officiating. Interment was in Princeton Cemetery, Princeton, KS. Mrs. Deaton died Monday, June 23, at Richmond Care Center. Edith M. Deaton was born October 30, 1910, at Princeton, KS, the daughter of David L. and Mary (Kennedy) Mathias. She attended rural schools and was a lifelong Franklin County, KS, resident. Edith was a lifelong homemaker and a member of Centropolis Baptist Church. Edith and Emory William Deaton were married October 14, 1951, in rural Ottawa. Mrs. Deaton was preceded in death by her husband, Emory William Deaton, on April 1, 2003; her parents, David L. and Mary Mathias; and her brother, John Mathias. Edith is survived by her sisters, Ruth E. Rathjen, Princeton, KS, Mildred A. Brown, Princeton, KS, and Nellie M. Carey, Kansas City, KS; her brother, Alfred Mathias, Tecumseh, KS; and many nieces and nephews. The family received friends on Tuesday, June 24, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Centropolis Baptist Church and left in care of the funeral home. Dengel and Son Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.” “Timothy Thomas Dougan 1951-2003 Memorial services for Timothy Thomas Dougan, 51, Fontana, KS, were Thursday, June 26, 2003, at 6:00 p.m. at Wilson and Son Funeral Home, Paola, KS. A gathering of family and friends was held following the memorial service at the funeral home. Mr. Dougan died Friday, June 20, at Miami County Medical Center, Paola, KS, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Tim, as he was known by family and friends, was born September 6, 1951, at Gardner, KS, the son of Delmar Dean and Virginia May (Bigham) Dougan. In 1955, the family moved to Olathe, KS, before making their home in Fontana in 1963. Tim graduated from Fontana High School in 1969. Shortly after graduating, Tim worked at Behm Steel Company in Osawatomie, KS, before being employed at Sutherlands Ranch in Fontana in September of 1969. He was the manager of the ranch and worked up until his illness. He enjoyed being around horses, which made him love his work at the ranch. He also enjoyed all types of hunting, fishing, horse racing, farming, and getting together with his family and friends. He was a people person and was always the first to lend a helping hand to a friend in need. For this he will be truly missed. Tim and Diana Lynn Browning were married on August 5, 1976, at Paola, KS, and to this marriage one daughter, Marie, was born. Mr. Dougan was preceded in death by his father, Delmar Dougan; and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Browning. Tim leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Diana Dougan, of the home; his daughter, Marie Dougan, of the home; his mother, Virginia Dougan, Fontana, KS; his sisters, Terry Jenkins, LaCygne, KS, Rose Johnson, Osawatomie, KS, Natalie Hall, Redfield, KS, and Connie Nickell, Fontana, KS; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him deeply.
