Mrs. Smith died Monday, July 7, at her home. Velma K. Smith was born January 10, 1940, at Osawatomie, KS, the daughter of William Hoyle and Margaret (McCall Hoyle) Hadsall. She graduated from Ottawa High School with the Class of 1959. She had lived in Richmond since May 1978. Velma was a school bus driver for CF Bus Service to Lakemary School and Swenson School. She was site manager for Mid-America Nutrition, Richmond, and served as a board member for the Berea-Richmond Cemetery Association. Velma and Marvin Smith were married June 2, 1967, at Leon, IA. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her father, William Hoyle. Velma is survived by her husband, Marvin, of the home; her sons, Ronald Smith and his wife, Christy, Garnett, and Daniel Smith and his wife, Ange, Holton, KS; her daughters, Laura Bentley and her husband, Rocky, Soldier, KS, and Kimberly Sjorgren and her husband, Scott, Olathe, KS; her parents, Robert and Margaret Hadsall, Richmond, KS; her sister, Rhonda Frank, Richmond, KS; and eleven grandchildren. Music was provided by Cathy Parsons. Musical selections included ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘Softly and Tenderly’, and ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Cancer Foundation.” “Charles L. ‘Charlie’ Falls 1923-2003 Funeral services for Charles L. ‘Charlie’ Falls, 79, Ottawa, KS, were Monday, July 7, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, with Marvin E. Ross officiating. Interment with military honors was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mr. Falls died Tuesday, July 1, at Village Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa. Charles L. Falls was born July 17, 1923, at Denton, MT, the son of John McDaniel and Hattie Claire (Burlingham) Falls. He moved with his family from Montana to Kansas in 1936 and to Ottawa in 1948. Charlie attended Richmond High School and CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Camp, and later earned a General Equivalency Diploma in 1971. He served in the United States Army from February 8, 1943 to November 3, 1945, during World War II in the European Theater. Charlie was a Tank Crew Gunner and Forward Observer and performed duties of an Armorer, which consisted of maintaining, servicing, and repairing weapons. He was a member of the 112th New Jersey Field Artillery, 696th Battalion, which participated as a relief force for the Battle of the Bulge. His unit saw action in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe and participated in the Normandy Invasion. Charlie was a member of American Legion Fuller Thompson Post #48, Garnett; a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Memorial Post #5901, Ottawa; charter member of Ottawa Coin and Stamp Club; life member of the National Rifle Association; and worked with Cub and Boy Scouts for many years. Charles and Henrietta Elizabeth ‘Happy’ Miltz were married on March 11, 1950, at Ottawa. Mr. Falls was preceded in death by his parents, John McDaniel and Hattie Claire Falls; his sisters, Frances Cunningham and Virginia Martz; and his brothers, Clifford Falls and Donald Falls. Charles is survived by his wife, Henrietta Elizabeth Falls, Ottawa; his sons, Charles Richard Falls, Ottawa, KS, John Lee Falls, Brock, NE, Mark Theodore Falls, Ottawa, KS, Terry Allen Falls, Ottawa, KS, and Stephen Brent Falls, Topeka, KS; his grandchildren, Cyndi Davidson, Christina Falls, Julianna Falls, Janelle Falls, Frances ‘Frankie’ Falls, Mary Darnell, Theresa Buttler, Joseph Falls, Erich Falls, and John Adams; and seven great-grandchildren. Albert Miller was born November 13, 1912, at Scipio, KS, the son of Ignatius and Elizabeth (Lickteig) Miller. He was a lifetime resident of the Scipio area where he was a farmer and stockman. Albert was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Lay Carmelites, all of Scipio. Albert and Veronica Wuckowitsch were married January 4, 1938, at Greeley, KS. Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his parents, Ignatius and Elizabeth Miller; his brothers, Edmund, Rupert, and Romanus Miller; and his sisters, Rose Katzer, Bertha Setter, Amelia Setter, Monica Setter, and Suzanne Tallman. Albert is survived by his wife, Veronica Miller, Garnett; his sons, Charles Miller, Garnett, Will Miller, Shawnee Mission, KS, and Raymond Miller and his wife, Debby, Paola, KS; his daughters, Ethel Sobba and her husband, Ron, Garnett, and Eileen Bowling and her husband, Charles, Ottawa, KS; his sister, Matilda Katzer, Marble Falls, TX; twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
