Bennett 1907-2003 Graveside services for Florence B. Bennett, 96, Iola, KS, were Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at Geneva Cemetery with Rev. Steve Traw officiating. Mrs. Bennett died Monday, August 18, at Tara Gardens, Iola. Florence B. Bennett was born April 18, 1907, on a farm northwest of Lone Elm, KS, the daughter of Frank and Lillian M. (Swaggart) Sampson. She attended Prairie View country school near Lone Elm, and then Pumkin Kolig when the family moved to a farm one and one half miles west of Geneva. She received her college education from Emporia State and taught school for thirty-seven years. Florence and Robert A. ‘Bill’ Bennett were married in 1929. They made their home on the Sampson farm east of Neosho Falls until moving to Arkhaven Apartments in Iola in 1993. Mrs. Bennett was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Bennett, on August 10, 1995; her parents, Frank and Lillian Sampson; and her brother, William B. Sampson. Florence is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. Family and friends gathered at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. for a short visitation before going in procession to the cemetery. Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel, Iola, KS, was in charge of arrangements.” Page 5, Column 2: “David Truman Robinson 1926-2003 Funeral services for David Truman Robinson, 76, Garden City, KS, were Monday, August 11, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, with Rev. Raymond Raley, Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg, Rev. Dale Sweley, and Pastor Gary Don Newman officiating. Interment was in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with full military honors conducted by the Fort Riley Military Honor Guard. Mr. Robinson died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Amarillo, TX. David Truman Robinson was born August 28, 1926, at Garnett, the son of David A. and Lucile (Mains) Robinson. He lived in Wichita until 1939 when his father was transferred to Davenport, IA. He graduated from Davenport High School with the Class of 1944. Shortly after his eighteenth birthday, he was inducted into the United States Army and served during the Philippine Campaign with the 40th Infantry Division. After returning home to Davenport from World War II, he attended St. Ambrose College, graduating in January, 1951. David and Bernice Kath were married on August 19, 1950, at Davenport, IA. Mr. Robinson was employed as a sale representative for Shell Oil Company in Iowa. In August, 1955, he went to work in marketing and management for the Warren Petroleum Corporation, living in Omaha, NE, Garden City, KS, St. Louis, MO, Mobile, AL, Kansas City, MO, and Tulsa, OK. The family returned to Garden City in 1970, where he founded Robinson Oil Company, from which he retired in 2001. He was involved in petroleum trade associations where he served as president of the Kansas Oil Marketers Association in 1978. He also served as president of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America in 1985. He became involved in the People to People organization and, along with his wife, led delegations of petroleum marketers to Japan, China, and Hong Kong three times. He also led delegations to the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Poland, New Zealand, and Australia. He served as president of the Palace Corporation and, along with a group of Garden City businessmen, built the Garden City Hilton Inn. Mr. Robinson was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on several church boards and taught Sunday School. He also belonged to the American Legion and was involved in several community organizations, including the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce and United Way. Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents, David A. and Lucile Robinson; and his brother, Paul Robinson. David is survived by his wife, Bernice Robinson, of the home; his sons, Douglas Robinson, Scottsdale, AZ, and Charles Robinson, Garden City, KS; his daughter, Rebecca Robinson, Dubai, United Arab Emirates; his brother, Clyde Robinson, Tucson, AZ; and four grandchildren. Attending the services from the Garnett area were his cousins, Larry Mains, Garnett, Florine Morgan, Ottawa, KS, Lorine Turner, Princeton, KS, and Floyd Mains, Greeley, KS. Music was provided by Marjorie Vanderweide, organist, and Lance Fairbairn, vocalist. Musical selections included ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’. Congregational singing included ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ and ‘Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus’. Casketbearers were J.D. Brewer, Jack Bruns, Duane Eads, Jim Eatherly, Leighton Fairbairn, Richard Henkle, Jack Just, and Karel Roberts. Honorary casketbearers were the Downtown Coffee Group. Memorials are suggested to the World War II National Memorial in Washington, D.C., which may be left in care of the funeral home. Hesse, Osawatomie, KS, formerly of Greeley, KS, were Monday, August 18, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Father George Matz officiating. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery. Mr. Hesse died Thursday, August 14, in Douglas County. Brent C. Hesse was born May 14, 1970, at Garnett, the son of Bernard and Kathryn Joan (Gehr) Hesse. He grew up in Greeley and graduated from Central Heights High School in 1989. He worked for Town Oil Company, drilling and maintaining oil wells. His hobbies included fishing. Mr. Hesse was preceded in death by his mother, Kathryn Joan Hesse. Brent is survived by his sons, Kalven Charles Hesse and Damian Lee Hesse, both of Osawatomie, KS; his father, Bernard Hesse, Greeley, KS; his brothers, John Hesse and his wife, Sarah, and Alan Hesse, both of Greeley, KS; his sisters, Julie Katzer and her husband, Tim, Garnett, Carla O’Connor, Ottawa, KS, Jennie Brown and her husband, Casey, and Jill Hesse, both of Greeley; nine nieces and nephews; and his companion, Julie Brewer, Paola, KS. Recorded musical selections included ‘Dust in the Wind’, ‘On Eagle’s Wings’, and ‘Born to be Wild’. Casketbearers were Gerard Egidy, Robert Egidy, Mike Evans, Dale Kratzberg, Gail Kratzberg, and Gary Rosendale. The family received friends on Sunday, August 17, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Manning died Sunday, August 17, at Golden Heights Living Center, Garnett. Belva M. Manning was born January 4, 1911, at Honeoye, PA, the daughter of George and Lillie (Smith) Regis. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Garnett and the Whosoever-Will Class. Belva and Arthur Charles Manning were married June 8, 1940. Mrs. Manning was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Charles Manning; and her parents, George and Lillie Regis. Belva is survived by her son, Bob Manning, Leawood, KS; her daughter, Virginia Manning, Osawatomie, KS; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; her brothers, Morris Regis, Wichita, KS, Virgil Regis, Duke Center, PA, and Ivan Regis, Florida; and her sister, Doris Baldwin, New York. Music was provided by Laura Parks, organist, and Richard Parks, soloist. Musical selections included ‘Just As I Am’ and ‘In The Garden’. Casketbearers were Jared Dykes, Scott Hall, Aaron Manning, Dan Thomasson, Jacob Thomasson, and Tim Thomasson.
