Brown 1922-2003 Richard Wells Brown, 81, died September 11, 2003, at his home in The Woodlands, Texas. Private services will be held later at Higgins Lake, Michigan. Cashner Funeral Home and Cemeteries in Conroe, Texas handles cremation arrangements. He was born June 14, 1922, in Leslie, Michigan to Nelson and Maxine (Ludwick) Brown. He lived in Mason, Michigan, 61 years before retiring to The Woodlands in 1983. He married Elaine Pleus in June 1941, in New York City. She survives. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a third generation newspaperman, serving as editor and publisher of newspapers in Mason, Ross Common, and Canton, Michigan, and the Woodlands Villager in Texas. He had served as a Marshal/Starter for more than a decade at the Woodlands Country Club. For the past two years he had been a contributing columnist to the ‘Anderson County Advocate’ in Garnett, Kansas. He was a Rotarian and a member of the Kiwanis Club and the VFW. Other survivors include four sons, Vern Brown of Ottawa, Tom Brown of Traverse City, Michigan, Bob Brown of The Woodlands, Texas, and Rick Brown of Long Beach, California; four daughters, Kathy Miller of Spring, Texas, Valerie Gates of Desert Mountain, Arizona, Nancy Olsen of East Lansing, Michigan, and Becky Brown of Grayling, Michigan; sister Margaret Doolittle of Mason, Michigan; 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Brown, a sister, Caroline Bauer, and a great granddaughter, Kennedy Meek.
