Bob King officiating. Mrs. Phipps died at 12:45 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 2003, at a hospital in Pittsburg, KS, following an illness. Ruby Allie Faye Murphy Phipps was born February 29, 1932, in Cherokee County, OK, one of 10 children born to William and Willie Mae (Couston) Murphy. She had lived in Butler for the past 10 years, moving from Burlingame, KS. Ruby was a homemaker. She also volunteered for the Head Start and ECAN Programs in Osage County, MO. Among her interests were quilting, crocheting, and gardening. Ruby and Deward G. Phipps were married September 5, 1950, at Peco Rivera, CA. He preceded her in death on May 24, 1991. Mrs. Phipps is survived by her 11 children, Edward S. Phipps, Conroe, TX, Nila Phipps, Mindenmines, MO, Natha Lillard, Moran, KS, Curtis Phipps, Altus, OK, Dovie Strange, Victoria, TX, Oscar Phipps, Carmen Phipps, and Maurice Phipps, all of the home, Lavella Buckmeier, Dover, KS, Deadra Jones, Garnett, and Carl Phipps, Ottumwa, IA; 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity. Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS, was in charge of arrangements.” “Gary D. Gillett 1948-2003 Funeral services for Gary D. Gillett, 55, Basehor, KS, were Saturday, September 27, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, KS, with Father Tod Ziegler officiating. Interment was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mr. Gillett died Tuesday, September 23, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO. Gary D. Gillett was born September 2, 1948, at Shenandoah, IA, the son of Harland F. Gillett and Helen (Riggs) Cronin. He and his family moved from Iowa to the Kansas City area in 1953. He attended school in Smithville, Liberty; and Argentine High School, Kansas City, KS. He operated a fuel transportation business in Parkville, MO, for several years. Since that time, he had been employed by Casey’s General Stores. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He liked mechanical work, and refurbished old cars. He liked being home working in his yard and garden. Gary and Patricia Porter were married in 1978 at Kansas City, KS. Mr. Gillett was preceded in death by his father, Harland F. Gillett; and his maternal grandparents, Maynard and Bertha Riggs. Gary is survived by his wife, Patricia, of the home; his sons, Mark Evan Gillett and Matthew David Gillett, of the home; his mother and step-father, Helen and Ray Cronin, Olathe, KS; his sister, Jeanine Smith, Princeton, KS; his brothers, Harland W. Gillett, McLouth, KS, and Dennis L. Gillett, Rantoul, KS; and his step-brother, Larry Laird, Kansas City, KS. The family greeted friends at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, prior to the funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s School in Kansas City, KS, and left in care of the funeral home.
