Born on October 25, 1908, to Leslie Gray and Myrtle Stratton Gray near Windsor, MO, she spent her early years on the family farm near there. Graduating from Windsor High School, Leslie then attended Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, MO, where she met her future husband, Marshall E. Copeland, also a student at the college. Married on August 3, 1931, she continued teaching for several years until the family expanded to include a daughter, Shirley Ann Copeland Fooshee, and two sons, Richard Gray Copeland and Rodney Eugene Copeland. These years were spent in Stotesbury, MO, Amsterdam, MO, and Colony, KS, before moving to Garnett in 1941. After the birth of her children, Leslie became a full-time homemaker. A very significant part of her life was her faith in God, which was evidenced by all she did. A member of the First Baptist Church of Garnett, she was actively involved in Bible study groups, ABW Women’s Circles, and in teaching and helping with Sunday School and Vacation Church School classes. After Marshall’s retirement, they enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida. Following Marshall’s passing in 1986, Leslie continued the annual treks to Dundee, FL, the first year with her sister, Mildred, and the next 10 years with good friend Lena Cramer. Soon after her 90th birthday, she moved from her home to Parkside Place Apartments, and then in the fall of 2003 to Golden Heights Living Center. Music will be provided by Jon Covault, organist, and Laura Parks, pianist. Musical selections include ‘Trust and Obey’, sung by Leslie’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren; ‘What A Friend We Have In Jesus’, played by a woodwind quintet comprised of Mary Etta Copeland, Leslie Hodges, Jenna Hodges, Mary Hamilton, and Denise Hamilton; and ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness’ and ‘To God Be The Glory’ as congregational hymns led by Leslie’s grandson, Jon Copeland.
