Interment was in Green Valley Cemetery, northeast of Lane, KS. Mrs. Yerkes died Saturday, March 6, at Village Manor Nursing Home, Ottawa. Etna Elizabeth Yerkes was born January 3, 1907, at Lane, KS, the daughter of Abraham and Bertha (Hodge) Lynn. She attended Green Valley School, graduated from Lane High school with the Class of 1926, and attended Pittsburg State and Ottawa Universities. She was a lifelong resident of Franklin and Miami Counties, living in the Lane community, and moving into Ottawa in 1971. She was a school teacher for 43 years, having taught in Miami and Franklin County rural schools, Lane, Princeton, and Central Heights Elementary Schools, retiring in 1969. Etna was a member of the Green Valley Baptist Church since early childhood. She was an honorary life member of the National and State Retired Teacher’s Association; life member of the Sons and Daughters of the Soddies, Inc.; and was a member of the Ottawa Circle 33 of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization for descendants of Civil War veterans. Etna and James Delbert Yerkes were married November 5, 1937, at Marshall, MO. He preceded her in death on June 14, 1981. Mrs. Yerkes was also preceded in death by her parents, Abraham and Bertha Lynn; her sisters, Ruby Huck and Cecil Baker; her brothers, Orville Lynn and Kenneth Lynn; her nieces, Shirley Stottlemire and Dora Roles; and her nephew, Richard Baker. Etna is survived by her nieces, Ferne Culver, Overland Park, KS, Bertha Allenson, Blackstone, VA, and Sharon Harrison, Danville, VA; 16 great-nieces and nephews; 12 great-great-nieces and nephews; and many friends and neighbors whom she appreciated very much. The family greeted friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Alzheimer’s Association, in care of the funeral home. Dengel and Son Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.” Page 5, Column 3: “Elizabeth E. McDonald 1917-2004 Funeral services for Elizabeth E. McDonald, 86, Garnett, were Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gale E. Mack officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. McDonald died Sunday, March 7, at Anderson County Hospital. Elizabeth E. McDonald was born June 3, 1917, at Hanna, OK, the daughter of Roy M. and I. Blanche (McMichael) Payne. She graduated from Parker High School with the Class of 1935. She earned an Associate degree from the College of Paola, then received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Ottawa University, and her Masters degree from the University of Kansas. Prior to her marriage, Elizabeth taught in Linn County for seven years and at Irving Grade School in Garnett for three years. She retired after 17 years of teaching English and Speech, and directing numerous plays and musical productions at Garnett High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and P.E.O., all of Garnett; National Education Association; and the KU Alumni Association. She was active in Scouting programs with her students, and later with her children. Elizabeth and David L. McDonald were married April 4, 1944, at Kansas City, KS. Music was provided by Joyce Hardesty, organist, and Scott Schulte, soloist. Casketbearers were Melvin Bauck, Kenny Kellstadt, Kendall Payne, Jeff Jensen, Mike McDonald, and Dave Stanton. Mrs. McDonald was preceded in death by her husband, David, in 1963; her parents, Roy and Blanche Payne; and her brothers, Paul A. Payne and William M. Payne. Elizabeth is survived by her sons, David L. McDonald and his wife, Leigh, Richmond, VA, and Andrew P. McDonald, Kansas City, MO; her daughter, Elizabeth E. Abraham and her husband, William D., Charleston WV; her brother, Robert R. Payne and his wife, Doris, Topeka, KS; her sister, Doris W. Payne, Garnett; and four grandchildren.
