Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Graceland Cemetery, Burlington, KS. Mrs. Garrett died Thursday, March 11, at Alterra Sterling House of Derby. A complete obituary will appear in Friday’s Advocate.” “Robert L. Baber, Sr. 1934-2004 Funeral services for Robert L. Baber, Sr., 69, Independence, MO, were Thursday, March 11, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at Rockwood Baptist Church in Independence. Interment was in Floral Hills Cemetery. Mr. Baber died Monday, March 8, at Independence Regional Health Center. Robert L. Baber was born May 24, 1934, at Garnett, the son of Earnest and Alice (Blundell) Baber. He grew up in the Kansas City area and attended Paseo High School. He worked as a fabricator for Kansas City Kenworth for 22 years until he retired in 1997. He was a member of Rockwood Baptist Church, UAW Local #710, Orchestra band at Quigley Studios, and had played semi-pro baseball in the Ban Johnson League as a pitcher. Robert was known as a man who could fix anything. He was loved by all who knew him and had a passion for all types of animals. He once said that someday he would see all of his animals in Heaven as he was sure they would be there to greet him. Robert and Idella Wurtz were married July 5, 1963. Mr. Baber was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Alice Baber; his sisters, Lucille Ramsey in 1998, and Wilma Shelton in 1995. Robert is survived by his wife, Idella, of the home; his son, Robert Lee Baber, Jr., and his wife, Brenda, Independence, MO; his daughter, Belinda Kay Jarvis and her husband, Matthew, Kansas City, MO; his sister, Elizabeth Valentine, Kansas City, MO; his grandchildren, Robert Lee Baber III, Jessica Marie Baber, Chad Adam Baber, Anthony Patrick Jarvis, and Heather Marie Jarvis; and his brother-in-law, Chester Ramsey, Independence, MO. Speaks Suburban Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.” Page 5, Column 3: “Carol Dean Spillman 1929-2004 Funeral services for Carol Dean Spillman, 74, Garnett, were Saturday, March 13, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church, Kincaid, KS, with Revs. Lee Bahney, Joe Rei, and Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Kincaid Cemetery. Mr. Spillman died Wednesday, March 10, at Anderson County Hospital, Garnett. Carol Dean Spillman was born December 4, 1929, at Bayard, KS, the son of Dewey and Wilma (Decker) Spillman. He was a graduate of Kincaid High School with the Class of 1947. Dean was a member of the Reorganized Church of Later Day Saints in Mapleton, KS. Dean and Letha Miller were married March 3, 1950, at Mapleton, KS. After their marriage, they made their home on a farm near Kincaid where Dean was a devoted farmer until retiring in 1999, at which time they moved to Garnett. In his earlier years, Dean was involved in the Kincaid Lions Club and Kincaid Alumni, and was president of the Farm Bureau board. Mr. Spillman was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Wilma Spillman. Dean is survived by his wife, Letha, of the home; his daughters, Sandra Kaiser and her husband, Vergle, Blue Mound, KS, Marsha Beckmon and her husband, Randal, Kincaid, KS, and Deanna Krull and her husband, Max, Blue Mound, KS; his grandson, Nathan Beckmon and his wife, Krissy, Kincaid, KS; his granddaughters, Tara Cook, South Carolina, Shelby Krull and April Krull, both of Blue Mound, KS; his great-grandchild, Rylee Beckmon, Kincaid, KS; and two brothers, Jack Spillman, Kincaid, KS, and Decker Spillman, Colony, KS. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, pianist, and Gary Benjamin, soloist. Musical selections included “Precious Lord”, “Take My Hand”, “Daddy’s Hands”, and “She Misses Him”. Casketbearers were Gerald Welsh, Richard Church, Neil Holloway, L.M. Krull, Kenneth Powers, and Dewey Spillman. Honorary casketbearers were Dick Christy, Dale Finkenbinder, Joe Humbert, and Howard Thompson. The family received friends on Friday, March 12, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community of Christ in Mapleton, KS, or the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church in Kincaid.
