April 9, 2004 The ADVOCATE Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 8, No. 28 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 5, Column 3: "Ann Dyrdek 1915-2004 Mass of Christian Burial for Ann Dyrdek, Topeka, KS, formerly of Garnett, was Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Angles Catholic Church with Father George Matz and Father Tony Blaufuss officiating. Lector was Joe Hess. Gift Bearers were Lee and Tyler Reed. Interment was in Holy Angels Cemetery. Mrs. Dyrdek died Sunday, April 4, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka. Ann Dyrdek was born July 18, 1915, at Richmond, KS, on the farm of Joseph and Jane (Strobel) Setter as the second birth of a set of twins. Her sister, Clara, was born first, weighing two and one half pounds, followed by the surprise of another baby, Ann, who weighed only two pounds. Twins were very unusual, and their mother kept Clara and Ann in a shoe box by the stove to keep them warm. If it were not already summer, the twins would not have survived. She attended Round Prairie School until the eighth grande. Ann and Edward (Ed) Dyrdek were married July 29, 1944, at Scipio, KS. After their marriage, Ann lived in Kansas City and worked for Pete and Palmolive while Ed went to war in Germany. When Ed returned to the United States after the war, they returned to Garnett and lived on the farm they purchased from her brother, Mike Setter. Ann taught Ed how to farm, and was always by his side in the fields and wherever they went. They owned and operated Ed and Ann's Den in Westphalia from 1960-1967, and Ann also worked as a nurse's aide at Anderson County Hospital for 15 years. They continued to live on the farm until 1999, when they moved to Topeka to be closer to their daughter, Joan, and her family. Mrs. Dyrdek was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Jane Setter; her sisters, Elizabeth Setter, Mary Platt, Katherine Hess, Cecelia Rubick, and Helen Lutz; and her brothers, Bernard Setter, Mike Setter, and Anthony (Tony) Setter. Ann leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband, Ed, who lives with their one daughter, Joan Dyrdek-Reed and her husband, Rich, in Topeka; her grandsons, Lee Reed and Tyler Reed, both of Topeka, KS; and her twin sister, Clara Peine, Richmond, KS. Music was provided by Mary Milner, organist, and the Joe Mader Family, vocalists. Musical selections included 'Come, Light of the World', 'Morning Has Broken', 'Prayers of St. Francis', and 'Amazing Grace'. Casketbearers were Myron Feuerborn, George Hess, Gene Peine, Emery Platt, Gene Platt, and Donald Setter. A Rosary service was held on Tuesday, April 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with the family greeting friends afterwards. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Angels School. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements." Transcribed for Anderson County Kansas USGENWEB By: Lulu B. Nixon
