Pittman 1912-2004 Virginia W. Pittman, 92, Garnett, died Thursday, May 20, 2004, at Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett. Private funeral services were held. Virginia W. Pittman was born January 2, 1912, at Topeka, KS, the daughter of Morgan and Wilna Washburn. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1931 and from Baker University in 1935. Virginia was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She dedicated many years to teaching. She enhanced the lives of older Kansans, serving as Silver Haired Legislator for two years, as president of the Senior Center Board in Garnett for seven years, and was a longtime member of the American Association of University Women. Virginia was recognized for her “Outstanding Service to the Community” by the AARP in 1990, and was “Outstanding Member for the Governor’s Award” in 1992. She will be remembered with abounding love by all whose lives she touched. Virginia and Rev. Clayton Pittman were married May 21, 1940. Virginia and Clayton served churches throughout Kansas during their 50-year ministry, including Columbus, Kansas City, and Osawatomie. In their retirement, they served Selma and Kincaid Methodist Churches, and the United Brethren Church of Christ in Garnett. Mrs. Pittman was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Clayton Pittman; her daughter, Jane Uhlig Shelton; and her parents; Morgan and Wilna Washburn. Virginia is survived by her daughter, Ann Palmer, Yacolt, WA; her sister, Margaret Washburn, Garnett; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. The family greeted friends on Sunday, May 23, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at her home at 121 West First Avenue. Memorials are suggested to the Baker University English Department or Garnett United Methodist Church.
