Jim Stigall officiating. Interment was in Highland Cemetery, Ottawa. Mrs. Underwood died Tuesday, August 24, at her home. Virginia Underwood was born May 19, 1920, at Williamsburg, the daughter of Charles J. Bush, Sr. and Helen Leona (Baer) Bush. She attended Williamsburg High School with the Class of 1938. She was a lifelong Franklin County resident, living in Williamsburg and Ottawa. Virginia worked for Franklin County for more than 20 years in the clerk’s office and as deputy appraiser, retiring in 1978. During World War II she worked at the Hercules Sunflower Ammunition Plant in DeSoto. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa. In 1975, when she was a grandmother, she earned her pilot’s license. She flew with her husband, Glenn, to many places all over the United States and many places in Canada. They also flew to many places in Alaska, including Fairbanks, Anchorage, Nome, Barrow, and Point Barrow. They served as each other’s co-pilot. She was an avid Kansas University basketball fan. She also loved flower gardening; was a serious card player, belonging to several bridge clubs; and, for many years bowled on numerous teams including Guys and Dolls. She was also a member of the 600 Club. Virginia and Dale Edward Gossett were married September 15, 1939, at Lyndon. He died during combat on July 26, 1944, during World War II. On December 23, 1978, Virginia was united in marriage with Glenn J. Underwood at Ottawa. Mrs. Underwood was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles J. and Helen Leona Bush; and her brothers, Charles Bush, Jr., John Bush (also during World War II), and Roger Bush. Virginia is survived by her husband, Glenn J. Underwood, of the home; her son, William Dale Gossett and wife Nancy of Aiken, SC; her stepsons, Gary L. Underwood and wife Chris of Baldwin City, and Douglas K. Underwood and wife Martha of Lake Ozark, MO; her sister, Marilyn Underwood of Ottawa; her grandchildren, Tami Ericson of King George, VA, Melissa Rimando of Aiken, SC, Barbara Wells of Lawrence, Kyle Underwood of Denver, CO, and Kristen Allen and Jane Dubbs, both of Lake Ozark, MO; and her great-grandchildren, Andy Ericson and Greg Ericson, both of King George, VA, Ryan Rimando and Craig Rimando, both of Aiken, SC, and Jackson Allen and Adriane Dubbs, both of Lake Ozark, MO. Memorials may be made to Franklin County Cancer Foundation or Midland Hospice. Dengel and Son Mortuary, Ottawa, was in charge of arrangements.” Page 5, Column 2: “Cora B. Askins 1914-2004 Funeral services for Cora B. Askins, 89, Garnett, were Saturday, August 28, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Askins died Wednesday, August 25, at Anderson County Hospital. Cora B. Askins was born November 1, 1914, at Garnett, the daughter of George Martin and Mary La Pearl (Weiland) Tush. She was a member of Garnett First United Methodist Church and the VFW Auxiliary. Cora B. was a homemaker. Cora B. and John H. Askins were married April 26, 1943, at Kansas City, MO. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1977. Mrs. Askins was also preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Kay Askins in 1970; her brothers, George, William, John, Tucker, and Ebbie Tush; and her sisters, Leota Hinkle, Vera Carnes, Mary Lee Robinson, and Martina Repert. Cora B. is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Askins Beller and her husband Pat of Garnett; her sisters, Irma Hill of Emporia and Helen Rockers of Garnett; and her sister-in-law, Nancy Tush of Wichita. Music was provided by Jon Covault, organist, and Scott Schulte, soloist, who sang “The Lord’s Prayer”. Other musical selections included “In The Garden”, “The Old Rugged Cross”, and “Someday My Love”. Casketbearers were James Tush, Bud Tush, John Tush, Tom Tush, Gary Kee, Kenneth Platt, and Eddie Repert. The family received friends on Friday, August 27, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
