Mrs. Lawrence died Friday, December 31, 2004, at Golden Heights Living Center. Memorials may be made to Golden Heights Living Center.” “A. Murry Smith 1920-2004 A.Murry Smith was born September 30, 1920, in Moran, the son of Blynn S. and Helen M. (McKettrick) Smith. He died on Saturday, December 11, 2004, at Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence. He had lived in Lawrence since 1945. After graduating from Garnett High School in 1938, he worked in the aircraft industry in Wichita. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served during World War II. Murry Smith attended Kansas University in Lawrence, and then worked for the United States Postal Service for 26 years. He served as Postal Superintendent in both KU’s Strong Hall and in the Jayhawk Station beginning in 1970. After retiring in 1972, Murry worked for eight years in the general accounting office at KU. He began participating in the life of First Presbyterian Church when it was located downtown, and was faithful as a member for more than 35 years. He was also a longtime member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Other memberships included Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 in Lawrence. Murry and Marjorie R. Hill were married September 23, 1945, in Chanute. They have a son, David Hill Smith, his wife, Robyn, and their two daughters, Maggie and Emily. Other survivors include his brother, Donald Smith of Junction City; and his sister-in-law and her husband, Treva and Claron Cole of Garnett. The family suggests memorials to First Presbyterian Church or Presbyterian Manor, both of Lawrence.
