Kelley 1917-2005 Funeral services for Opal W. Kelley, 87, Garnett, were Friday, February 18, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Skedel officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Kelley died Monday, February 14, at Anderson County Hospital. Opal W. Kelley was born November 9, 1917, at Mound Valley, KS, the daughter of Henry “Doc” and Cora (Woods) White. She grew up in the Beaumont and Leon area, graduating from Leon High School. After marriage, she lived in Beaumont and El Dorado before moving to Garnett in 1950. Opal worked at the Garnett Sewing Factory and later at Tri-Ko in Garnett with her sister, Arlene Miller. Opal and Archie Lewis were married June 26, 1938, at Beaumont until his death on September 28, 1953. Opal and Brad Roberts were married April 9, 1959, at Garnett. He preceded her in death on March 26, 1972. Opal and Gene Kelley were married on June 11, 1989, at Garnett. He preceded her in death on January 5, 1993. Mrs. Kelley was also preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Lewis on January 10, 1994; her brothers, Tom, Sant, and Fate White; her sisters, Lela Franks and Arlene Miller; and three infant siblings. Opal is survived by her son, Tom Lewis and his wife, Betty, of Garnett; her daughters, Norma Dressler and her husband, Roger, of Baldwin, and Nita Phipps and her husband, A.C., of Troy, MI; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her daughters-in-law, Carolyn Lewis of Lawrence and Patricia Lewis of Oklahoma City, OK. Music was provided by Jon Covault, organist. Musical selections included “Suppertime” and “Beyond The Sunset” sung by Sheryl Urquhart and Pam Covault, and “Open Up Your Heart And Let The Sun Shine In” by Marcie Dressler. Casketbearers were J. D. Dressler, Rusty Dressler, Scott Fagg, Daryl Lewis, Dave Lewis, and Pyan Phipps. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” “Marita Rochelle Ensley McDiffett 1956-2005 Funeral services for Marita Rochelle Ensley McDiffett, 48, Colony, are Thursday, February 24, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel in Colony. Interment is in Colony Cemetery. Mrs. McDiffett died Saturday, February 19, at KU Medical Center. Visitation is Wednesday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Colony.” “Thelma D. Hamilton 1914-2005 Funeral services for Thelma Hamilton, 90, Garnett, are Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Garnett Presbyterian Church. Interment is in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Hamilton died Sunday, February 20, at Golden Heights Living Center. Visitation is Tuesday, 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.” Page 5, Column 2: “Cathryn L. Kirk 1916-2005 Funeral services for Cathryn L. Kirk, 88, Denton, TX, formerly of Garnett, were Saturday, February 19, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton with Rev. Stephen Plunkett officiating. Graveside interment services were held Monday, February 21, at 10:00 a.m. at Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Kirk died Thursday, February 17, in Denton. Cathryn L. Kirk was born on July 19, 1916, at Garnett, the daughter of Leslie W. and Dorothy Jones. Cathryn and Sennett Kirk, Jr. were married on February 1, 1941, in Kansas City, MO. They moved to Denton in July of 1957. Cathryn was an avid golfer and was a member of the Denton Country Club. She was a member of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club and the Denton Ariel Club. She was a longtime Pink Lady Volunteer at Flow Hospital. Cathryn was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Kirk was preceded in death by her husband, Sennett Kirk, Jr. in 1977; her parents, Leslie and Dorothy Jones; and two sisters, Dorothy and Bonnie. Cathryn is survived by her sons, Michael Kirk of Garnett and Sennett Kirk III of Denton; her daughter, Kathryn Kirk Bell of Irving, TX; her grandchildren, Dena Lee Watkins, Bryan Kirk, Leda Kirk, Ray Bell III, Melinda Kirk Danielson, and Lindy Kirk; eight great-grandchildren; and one niece, Nancy, of Houston, TX. The family suggests memorials to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 300 West Oak Street, Denton, TX 76201. Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, Denton, was in charge of Texas arrangements. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of Garnett arrangements.” “Barbara Jean Doughty 1932-2005 Barbara Jean Doughty, 72, rural Moran, died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Anderson County Hospital, Garnett. It was her request for cremation and private family services. Barbara was born on March 14, 1932, at El Dorado, the daughter of Charles and Bernice (Hillard) Ervin. She was a resident of Moran for most of her life. She attended public school there and graduated from Moran High School with the Class of 1950. Barbara and Keith Doughty were married in 1950. Mrs. Doughty is survived by her beloved husband, Keith; her sons, Mark and Todd Doughty; her daughter, Vickie Earnest; her sisters, Betty Davidson of Kansas City, MO, and Phyllis McVey of Moran; her brothers, Elwin Ervin of Nacogdoches, TX, and Elden Ervin of Mossy Rock, WA; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Moran Chapel.” Page 5, Column 3: “Marjorie Ann Brooks 1930-2005 Funeral services for Marjorie Ann Brooks, 74, Garnett, were Friday, February 11, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Skedel and Rev. Judy Brown officiating. Interment was in Hatch Cemetery, southwest of Uniontown. Mrs. Brooks died Tuesday, February 8, at Olathe Medical Center. Marjorie Ann Brooks was born June 22, 1930, at Uniontown, the daughter of Claude H. and Margaret (Lind) Stainbrook. She was owner/operator of a health food store in Olathe. Marjorie and William “Bill” Brooks were married June 6, 1945, at Fort Scott. Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her sisters, Stella Irene Carpenter and Florence Littrell. Marjorie is survived by her husband, Bill, of the home; her son, David Brooks of Overland Park; her daughter, Karen Brooks of Olathe; and her sisters, Claudia Mullins of Garnett, Nancy House of Altamont, and Neva Coberley of Aurora, MO. Music was provided by Jon Covault, organist, and Pam Covault, vocalist. Musical selections included “In The Garden” and “Amazing Grace”.
