Interment was in Highland Cemetery in Iola. Mr. Diebolt died Thursday, March 3, at his home. Lawrence P. Diebolt was born August 20, 1915, at Piqua, the son of Lawrence Frank and Bertha H. (Bolz) Diebolt. He grew up at Piqua, attending St. Martin’s Catholic School and Liberty School. He went to Kansas City and enrolled in aircraft school to learn his trade. He married Clara Maxine Weide on January 2, 1941. They made their home in San Diego, CA, while he served in the United States Army during World War II. After returning home from the service, he bought several farms, including one where Diebolt Lumber and Supply now stands. He bought a load of native oak from the Ozarks and used some and sold some, making enough to buy two loads of lumber. Farmers started coming to buy nails, bolts, and supplies. That is how he started Diebolt Lumber and Supply at LaHarpe. His wife, Maxine, died June 19, 1963. Lawrence kept all 10 of his children together. Maxine’s cousin, Rachel Hutchinson McIntosh from Ottawa, came and helped the girls with canning and gardening. Her husband had died three weeks before Maxine died. On April 4, 1964, she and Lawrence were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola. Lawrence sold his buriness to his son, Don, in 1999. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola, the Iola American Legion, was a lifetime member of the LaHarpe V.F.W., A.A.R.P., and was a former member of the Mid-America Lumberman’s Association.
