Mrs. Roeckers died Monday, May 4, at Anderson County Hospital.” “Ray Parks 1923-2005 Funeral services for Ray Parks, 81, Garnett, are Friday, May 6, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church. Interment is in Mont Ida Cemetery. Mr. Parks died Tuesday, May 3, at the VA Hospital in Leavenworth.” “James A. ‘Whit’ Sturm 1918-2005 Funeral services for James A. ‘Whit’ Sturm, 86, Garnett, formerly of Centerville, were Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Pleasanton, KS. Mr. Sturm died Saturday, April 30, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO. James A. Sturm was born September 26, 1918, at Ochelata, OK, the son of Curtis A. and Anna E. (Cox) Sturm. He was a resident of Linn County most of his early years. He and Pearl Jeanette Coleman were married on May 8, 1938. To this union were born four children, Joyce Elizabeth, James Alvin, Joanna Kay, and John Allen. He learned to weld from his father-in-law, Morton Coleman, and welded on the pipeline for several months, moving his family with its progress as far as Ohio. After the birth of his fourth child in Arkansas, his wife was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was confined to a hospital in Booneville, AR. Jeanette passed away on July 10, 1951. He then moved with his children, his mother and step-father to Linn County and opened his own welding and blacksmithing shop in Centerville. He then moved the shop to Finley, north of Centerville, where he repaired farm machinery for farmers from all over the county. He moved his shop to his home in May of 1964 after the store at Finley burned and was not replaced. Whit married Joyce Lynn Grant on February 5, 1966, at Mound City. To this union was born one daughter, Jackie Lynn. After his marriage, he and Joyce were granted custody of Joyce’s five younger siblings and helped to finish raising them. He continued to weld until his heart surgery in November of 1986. He then retired from welding, and he and Joyce moved to Garnett. He continued to enjoy his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandsons, the newest one born Tuesday, April 26, 2005. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. Mr. Sturm was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Anna Sturm; his stepfather, Morton A. Coleman; his brothers, LaClede Sturm and Glen Sturm; his sister, Mary Boody; and his first wife, Pearl Jeanette Coleman Sturm. Whit is survived by his wife, Joyce, of the home; their daughter, Jackie Olson and her husband, John, of Garnett; his four children from his first marriage, Joyce Buckley and her husband, Jim, of Garnett; Jim Sturm and his wife, Janis, of Kansas City, KS, Joann Richardt and her husband, Steve, of Broken Arrow, OK, and John Sturm and his wife, Carol, of Blytheville, AR; his sister, Blanche Purdy of Anderson, MO; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews. Musical selections included “My Heart Will Go On” and “Grandpa”, as recorded music. Casketbearers were Randy Keel, Joe Wight, Jeff Buckley, Eugene Eng, Dennis Roberts, and Josh Wight. Honorary casketbearers were Wes Gadelman, Jake Gadelman, Tim McCarty, Ryan Keel, Matt Roberts, Stephen Callow, and Tyler Keel. Whit was well known and liked and will be missed by all. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Russell died Tuesday, April 26, at Olathe Medical Center. Evelyn Marie Russell was born June 14, 1930, the daughter of Delbert James and Viola Alice (Rookstool) Cornett. After graduating from high school, she worked as a secretary for several years. She was a mother and homemaker who enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, and fishing. Evelyn attended LaCygne Christian Church and Beagle Methodist Church. Evelyn and James Ervin Russell were married March 17, 1951, at Kansas City, KS. He preceded her in death on November 20, 2002. Mrs. Russell was also preceded in death by her parents, Delbert and Viola Cornett; and her brother, John Cornett. Evelyn is survived by her sons, David Russell and his wife, Michelle, of Erie, and Jeffrey Russell and his wife, Allison, of Garnett; her daughter, Cynthia Johnson of Louisburg; her brothers, Delbert Cornett, James Cornett, and Ernest Cornett; her grandchildren, Joshua and Tara Russell, and Christine, Jennifer, and Jeremiah Johnson; and her great-grandchildren, Madison Dillow and Lyric Russell. Smith, 74, Mildred, formerly of Richmond, were Monday, May 2, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Mildred with Pastor Connie Cox officiating. Mrs. Smith died Friday, April 29, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg. Joyce E. Smith was born November 23, 1930, at Fort Scott, the daughter of French and Lola Anne (Hickman) Booher. She graduated from Richmond High School and then attended Baker University and Pittsburg State University, where she received her Master’s degree in Education. After her marriage, she and her husband moved often with his military career. The family moved to Richmond where they lived for 30 years before moving to the family farm near Mildred in 1995 following their retirement. Joyce was a member of the United Methodist Church, Mildred, and was a former member of the church in Richmond. She was also a pianist for the church. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, but her family was her greatest joy. Joyce and Richard C. Smith were married October 10, 1955, at Miami, OK. He preceded her in death on April 10, 1997. Mrs. Smith was also preceded in death by her parents, French and Lola Booher. Joyce is survived by her sons, Rockford C. Smith and his wife, Nancy, of Ballston Spa, NY, and Tracy B. Smith and his wife, Teresa, of Moran; her daughter, Lee Anne Howard and her husband, Jim, of Barco, NC; and her grandchildren, Katrina and Richard Smith, Dain, Kaitlyn, and Abigail Smith, and Danielle and Shelby Howard. Music was provided by Cathy Parsons, organist. The family suggests memorials to the Mildred United Methodist Church. Mrs. Feuerborn died Sunday, May 1, at Golden Heights Living Center. Marie M. Feuerborn was born July 12, 1905, at Temple, OK, the daughter of Joe and Katherine (Hastert) Benus. Marie lived most of her life in the Garnett area after moving from Oklahoma as a child. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and the Spring Branch Club. Marie and Anthony J. Feuerborn were married August 27, 1929, at Kansas City, MO. He preceded her in death on October 29, 1988. Mrs. Feuerborn was also preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Katherine Benus; five brothers and one sister. Marie is survived by her sons, Jack Feuerborn of Garnett, and Jerry Feuerborn and his wife, Ellie, of Salina; her daughters, Shirley Elgin of Kansas City, MO, and Alice Schill of Jacksonville, FL; and her granddaughter, Jane Serene of Salina. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” “Velma Marie Gillogly 1931-2005 Velma Marie Gillogly departed this life on April 18, 2005, at a Greenville, SC, hospital where she had been a patient for several weeks. She was laid to rest in Greer, SC. Velma Marie Gillogly was born on June 16, 1931, near LaCygne, the daughter of Elmer and Ruth (Sterling) Gillogly. She grew up in Anderson County and graduated from Welda High School. Velma spent most of her life caring for elderly persons in their homes, but had been in failing health the past few years. Miss Gillogly was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Ruth Gillogly; her brother, Lloyd; and her sisters, Pearl Messick and Lucille, who died in infancy.
