July 22, 2005 The ADVOCATE’s Free Press & Community News Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 9, No. 58 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 5, Column 4: “Helena Anna Stahl 1916-2005 Mass of Christian Burial for Helena Anna Stahl, 89, Lawrence, formerly of Westphalia, was Thursday, July 21, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. The Daughters of Isabella provided an Honor Guard. Graveside services were 2:00 p.m. Thursday at St. Teresa’s Catholic Cemetery in Westphalia. Miss Stahl died Monday, July 18, at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Home in Lawrence. Helena Anna Stahl was born January 15, 1916, at Westphalia, the daughter of Joseph F. and Elizabeth (Brands) Stahl. She attended grade and high schools in Westphalia and graduated from the School of Cosmetology in Topeka in 1936, spending several years as a hair stylist there. About 1941, she began a nursing career, working in hospitals in Holdrege, NE, and Del Norte, CO, before going to Lawrence Memorial Hospital as an LPN, where she was employed for 38 years. Helena had been a Lawrence resident since 1944. After her retirement in 1982, she did volunteer work with the R.E.A.C.H. Program, LINK, and was a receptionist at Catholic Social Services. She was also active in OURS-Oldsters United for Responsible Services. Helena was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Lawrence, the Altar Society, and was a charter member of the Daughters of Isabella. Miss Stahl was preceded in death by her parents and a sister. Helena is survived by her brother, Frank R. Stahl; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary was recited by the Daughters of Isabella on Wednesday evening at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church or Douglas County Senior Services and may be sent in care of the mortuary at 120 West 13th Street, Lawrence, KS 66044. Warren-McElwain Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.” “Leonard P. Kipper 1908-2005 The Mass of Resurrection for Leonard P. Kipper, 96, of Kansas City, is Saturday, July 23, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Scipio. Interment in the St. Boniface Cemetery. Mr. Kipper died Monday, July 18, at Olathe Good Samaritan Center. The family will greet friends on Friday, July 22, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the church where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. A complete obituary will appear in the next Advocate.
