Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Garnett Cemetery. Mrs. Burns died Saturday, January 15, at Shawnee Gardens, Shawnee, KS. Dorothy Fay Burns was born January 19, 1925, at Garnett, the daughter of Roy and Margaret (Smoot) Sutton, the fifth of their seven children. She attended school at Irving Elementary, where she graduated from the eight grade. Dorothy and Richard Lee Burns were married July 4, 1943, in a simple ceremony officiated by the local Garnett Justice of the Peace. Richard would be her life’s one great love. She shared his life for 21 years. Then, on July 16, 1964, in an unforeseen accident, her beloved husband preceded her in death. Richard and Dorothy were blessed with four children: Johnny Burns, Billy Burns, Connie Burns (Demoret), and Richard G. Burns. Dorothy led her family by example, as a hardworking, feisty individual. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Garnett and worked for years at Garnett’s own Crystal Cleaners. Afterwards, she began work at Midland Berg Brake of Iola. She began her retirement in 1990. Upon retirement, she enjoyed the company of her favorite companion Angel, a toy poodle that she raised from a puppy. Together with Angel, she regularly enjoyed afternoons watching her favorite sporting events. She especially enjoyed Kansas City Chiefs’ football. Mrs. Burns was also preceded in death by her eldest brother, Lloyd Sutton; her two younger sisters, Mrs. Imogene Gilpin and Mrs. Bessie Mae Cleary, as well as her elder sister, Mrs. Elsie Williams; and her grandson, Richard Daniel Burns. Dorothy is survived by her sons, Johnny Lee Burns and Billy Dean Burns, both of Wichita, and Richard Gene Burns of Peculiar, MO; her daughter, Connie Demoret of Kansas City, KS; her brothers, James Sutton of Coffeyville and Charles Sutton of Iola; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, organist, and Butch Rocker, soloist. Musical selections included “Abide With Me” and “Sunrise”. Casketbearers were Richard Demoret, Scott Demoret, Wayne Burns, Mike Burns, Steve Cronk, and Travis Burns. Honorary casketbearers were Jeff Witzman, Adam Falberg, Jeff Pyles, Kenny Pham, and John Taylor. The family received friends on Tuesday, January 18, 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.” Page 5, Column 2: “Shirley J. Cole 1940-2005 Funeral services for Shirley J. Cole, 64, Burlington, formerly of Garnett, were Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. at Wilson and Son Funeral Home, Paola. Interment was in Wagstaff Cemetery in rural Miami County, next to her beloved husband, Frank. Mrs. Cole died Thursday, January 13, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Shirley J. Cole was born June 9, 1940, at Drexel, MO, the daughter of Melvin E. Swogar, Sr. and Florence Estella (Castor) Swogar. She grew up and attended school in the Paola area. Shirley and James Franklin Cole were married March 11, 1960, at Paola, and together they became the proud parents of four children. They lived in the central eastern area of Kansas their entire life. Shirley was very devoted to her family and was a tremendous cook. It is said she could cook anything from “scratch” and fast. Shirley and Frank did everything together, especially their hard work in displaying their antique booth in the surrounding communities. She loved to cook for her family, gardening, canning, collecting antiques, and being with her family. Both Shirley and Frank were avid volunteers for EKCAN of Garnett. Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank, on November 12, 1995; her parents, Melvin and Florence Swogar; her brother, Melvin “Bud” Swogar, Jr.; her sister, Bonnie Brown; her sister-in-law, Jo Ann Swogar; her brother-in-law, Roy Brown; and twins. Shirley leaves behind to cherish her memory her sons, James Melvin Cole and Charles Alvin Cole and his wife, Paula; her daughters, Ronda Dee Smith and her husband, Gary, and Michelle Leigh Maley; her stepchildren, James F. Cole, Jr. and Maxine Graham; her sister, Loretta Tatum; her brother, Jay Swogar; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom will miss her deeply. Ansley, Jr. 1945-2005 Funeral services for Dan R. Ansley, Jr., 59, Ottawa, were Monday, January 17, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at Dengel and Son Mortuary with Pastor Don Cunningham officiating. Interment was at 1:00 p.m. at Hope Cemetery in Ottawa. Mr. Ansley died Sunday, January 9, at his home. Dan R. Ansley, Jr., was born January 19, 1945, at Coral Gables, FL, the son of Daniel R. Ansley, Sr. and Dorothy (Hawkins) Ansley. He lived in Hickman Mills, MO, before moving to Ottawa in 1978. He graduated from Belton (Missouri) High School with the Class of 1963, and the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in 1972, with a Bachelor of Science and Chemistry degree. From 1972-1973 he was employed by Beckman Medical Instruments, Kansas City, MO. From 1973-1978 Dan was vice president of Home Office Reference Laboratories in Lenexa. From 1978-1982, he owned and operated Carey Mechanical in Ottawa, and from 1982-1985, he was vice president for Clinical Reference Laboratories in Lenexa. In 1986 he formed Bioquest, a research and development company. Most recently, he developed an immuno-stimulant for the human and animal health industries. Dan was a member of Hickman Mills Community Christian Church, and a former member of First Baptist Church of Belton. Dan and Laura Frazier were married October 10, 1964, at Grandview, MO. Mr. Ansley was preceded in death by his father, Daniel R. Ansley, Sr.; his brother, Ben Ansley; his mother-and father-in-law, Charles and Ellen Frazier; and his uncle, Bill Audsley. Dan is survived by his wife, Laura, of the home; his mother, Dorothy Ansley of Parkville, MO; his son, Brad Ansley of Fairway; his daughter, Sandra Gunter of Mill Valley, CA; his sister, Jeanne Ansley of Parkville, MO; and his grandson, Gus Gunter of Mill Valley, CA.
