August 24, 2005 The ADVOCATE’s Free Press & Community News Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 9, No. 67 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 5, Column 1: “Charles ‘Charlie’ Burns 1926-2005 Funeral services for Charles ‘Charlie’ Burns, 79, Ottawa, were Saturday, August 20, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Dengel and Son Mortuary. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Pomona with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Mr. Burns died Tuesday, August 16, at his home. Charles Burns was born March 17, 1926, at Pomona, the son of Emma May Brown. He was a lifelong resident of Franklin County. He worked 18 years for Dwight Haworth Construction of Ottawa, approximately 10 years for Hamm’s Construction of Perry, Hercules Sunflower Ammunition Plant at DeSoto, and retired from the City of Ottawa on May 1, 1994, after approximately 12 years as a heavy equipment operator. Charlie served in the United States Army from June 20, 1944, to April 2, 1946, as Technician Fourth Grade, Company C, 278th Engineer Combat Battalion. He served six months at Heidelberg, Germany, with an Engineer Combat Unit as automotive mechanic working on all types of Army vehicles, including heavy trucks. He did major repair work on engines, bodies, and other parts and assemblies. He served as heavy truck driver and wrecker operator, driving equipment from two and one-half tons up to ten tons. He operated at night, over all types of roads and terrain, and sometimes under combat conditions. He received decorations and citations which included Carbine Marksman’s Badge, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory medal, American Theater Service Ribbon, and European Theater Service Ribbon with two bronze Stars. Charlie was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5901 and Order of Eagles #2700, both of Ottawa. On February 2, 1950, Charlie was united in marriage with Dora Belle Ogle at Lyndon. She preceded him in death on December 30, 1999. On May 18, 2001, Charlie was united in marriage with Lucy Ann (Beals) Steenrod at Ottawa. She survives of their home. Mr. Burns was also preceded in death by his mother, Emma May Brown; and his son, Charles L. Burns. Charlie is also survived by his daughter and her husband, Diana and Don Sellens of Ottawa; his son and his wife, Marvin and Brenda Burns of Overland Park; his stepdaughter and her husband, Ginger and Roger Milbern of Ottawa; his stepdaughter, Rebecca Grauel and Eleno C. Hernandez of Ottawa; his stepson, Philip Steenrod of Minnesota; his stepsister, Alice Franks of Quenemo; his granddaughter and her husband, Sheri and Arthur Morgan of Richmond; his grandson and his wife, SSG Robby and Katharina Burns of Vilseck, Germany; his grandsons, Scott Burns of Ottawa and Adrian Morgan of Richmond; his granddaughter, Shelbi Morgan of Richmond; seven step grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Dengel and Son Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.” Page 5, Column 2: “Wesley James Freeman 2000-2005 Funeral services for Wesley James Freeman, 5, Garnett, were Saturday, August 20, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Father Tony Blaufuss officiating. Interment was in Holy Angels Cemetery. Wesley died at the scene of a farm accident on Wednesday, August 17. Wesley James Freeman was born June 14, 2000, at Ottawa, the son of Samuel W. Freeman and Amanda (Heusted) Freeman. He loved to go fishing, play outside, and riding horses (even after falling, he got right back up and tried again). He loved playing with his brother, sister, and cousins, and roughhousing with his Dad, Mark, and Caleb. Wesley is survived by his parents, Amanda Freeman and Mark Foltz of Garnett, and Samuel W. Freeman and Stephanie Bresse of Blue Mound; his brother, Lane, age 3, and his sister, Kirsten, 6, both of the home; his grandparents, Charles and Beverly Freeman of Parker; his grandmother, Lauree Wright and Don Lickteig of Garnett; his grandfather, Kevin Heusted and Terrie Sales of Topeka; his great-grandmothers, Rosemary Heusted of Topeka, June Tinsley of Parker, and Marie Anderson of Garnett; his grandparents, Larry and Janice Foltz of Garnett; his grandfather, Gary Hartman, and his grandmother, Irene McCully and Dan Rhodes, all of Blue Mound. Music was provided by Keith Manbeck and Peggy Tholen. Musical selections included “Dance To Your Daddy”, “Sleep My Little Prince”, “Sleep Well”, “The Lord’s Prayer”, “Tears In Heaven”, and “Circle Of Life”. Casketbearers were Ebb Freeman, Branden Heusted, Dusty Rhynerson, and Caleb Foltz.
