Nadine Shores 1917-2005 Funeral services for E. Nadine Shores, 88, Topeka, were Monday, September 26, 2005, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel in Topeka with Rev. H. Wayne Fink, Rev. Joe Kutter, and Rev. Matt Sturtevant officiating. Interment was in Osawatomie Cemetery with Rev. H. Wayne Fink and Rev. Harry Fink officiating. Miss Shores died Thursday, September 22, at a Topeka retirement community. E. Nadine Shores was born May 27, 1917, at Osawatomie, the daughter of James and Minnie (Lemmons) Shores. She spent her childhood in Independence, Garnett, and Burlington, graduating from Garnett High School in 1935. She moved to Topeka in 1941. She was a secretary at the Boys Industrial School for 23 years, then became a secretary in the Records Division of the Topeka Police Department, retiring in 1982. Nadine was a volunteer for many years at the Topeka-Shawnee County Public Library and was a member of the First Baptist Church since her move to Topeka. Miss Shores was known for her caring attitude, caring for her mother, Minnie, and then for her sister, Lora. Her sense of humor was well-known. She had a quip for everyone, and she loved the Royals despite their losses. Nadine’s laughter, sense of humor, zest for life, love, concern for others, and her genuine friendship are gifts her family and friends will always remember and cherish. Miss Shores was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Henry ‘Harry’ Shores and Thomas Shores; and her sisters, Lora McKee and Dorothy Chandler. Nadine is survived by her nephews and nieces, Robert D. Shore and his wife, Wilma, and Richard Shores, all of Fort Scott; Beverly Fink and her husband, Rev. H. Wayne Fink of Manhattan; Sharon Ward of Case Grande, AZ; Lois Crist of Garnett; and Richard Clinton of Olathe; as well as grandnieces and nephews, great-grandnieces and nephews, and many friends. Carol Ard 1943-2005 Funeral services for M. Carol Ard, 62, Stark, were Tuesday, September 27, 2005, at Elsmore United Methodist Church, Elsmore, KS, with Pastor Connie Cox officiating. Interment was in Elsmore Cemetery. Mrs. Ard died Thursday, September 22, at Freeman Hospital, Joplin, MO. M. Carol Ard was born July 15, 1943, at Mt. Vernon, MO, the daughter of Jessie Davis Sr. and Nellie May (Craft) Davis. She grew up in Elsmore, attending school there. Carol and Darrell R. Ard were married December 12, 1961, at Iola. This union was blessed with four children. Following their marriage, the family lived in Phoenix, AZ, for 12 years before returning to Stark in 1974. She worked for Kustoms Electronics and MPH, before working as a cook at the Ozark Manor Nursing Home in Chanute. Carol enjoyed knitting and making things for family and friends. Mrs. Ard was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Davis Sr. and Nellie May Davis; one brother, Jessie Davis, Jr.; and one sister, Ona Mae Davis. Carol is survived by her husband, Darrell R. Ard of Stark; her sons, Eric Ard of Chanute, Garry Ard of Flagstaff, AZ, and Bryan Ard of Chanute; her daughter, Darla Henderson and her husband, Eddie, of Savonburg; her brothers, Merle Davis of Chanute and Richard Davis of St. Paul; her sisters, Neomi Turner of Chanute, Betty Craft and Jane Pease, both of Iola; Linda Harris of Quapaw, OK, and Melba Hutchins of Joplin, MO; 10 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Music was provided by Sandy Murrow. Musical selections included “Amazing Grace”, “Onward Christian Soldiers”, “Hymn of Promise”, and “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”. Casketbearers were Andrew Ard, Gregory Ard, Justin Ard, John Harris, Peter Hawkinson, Alex Henderson, Dawayne Henderson, and Michael Hutchins. Wools, 61, Colony, were Monday, September 26, 2005, at Iola Baptist Temple with Rev. Roger Collin and Rev. Art Collins officiating. Interment was in Baker Cemetery, west of Burlington. Mr. Wools died Thursday, September 22, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS, from injuries he received in a grain truck accident earlier in the day in Anderson County. Lawrence W. Wools was born November 17, 1943, at Garnett, the son of Willard Edmond and Ellen Maxine (Lamb) Wools. He grew up in the Colony and LaHarpe areas, graduating from LaHarpe High School in 1961. He served in the United States Army for four years. Lawrence and Ruth E. Manbeck were married July 24, 1963, at the Golden Valley Church southwest of Moran. They made their home in Kansas City for a short time, and later in Iola, LaHarpe, and Colony areas. He worked as a welder for Williams Brothers Pipeline for 30 years. He also farmed and had been helping area farmers. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and farming. Lawrence was a member of Iola Baptist Temple, the American Legion in Iola, and the Chanute V.F.W. Mr. Wools was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Ellen Wools; his father-in-law, Everett Manbeck; and his sister, Leona Fink. Lawrence is survived by his wife, Ruth Wools, of the home; his sons, Tim Wools and his wife, Virginia, of Iola, and John Wools and his wife, Karen, of LaHarpe; his daughter, Teresa Ballard of Lee’s Summit, MO; his mother-in-law, Thelma Manbeck of LaHarpe; his brother, Eugene W. Wools of Fairlawn, OK; and his grandchildren, Justin, Kortney, Alex, Natalie, Kayla, Kelci, and Karley. The family suggests memorial contributions to Iola Baptist Temple.
