October 21, 2005 The ADVOCATE’s Free Press & Community News Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 9, No. 84 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 6, Column 3: “Frederick W. ‘Fred’ Adamson 1925-2005 Funeral services for Frederick W. ‘Fred’ Adamson, 80, Ottawa, were Thursday, October 20, 2005, at Ottawa First United Methodist Church. Interment was in Highland Cemetery with military honors by the Kansas National Guard. Mr. Adamson died Sunday, October 16, at Christian Care Cottage II, Ottawa. Frederick W. Adamson was born July 5, 1925, at Emporia, the son of Fred and Amy (Harris) Adamson. He had lived in Ottawa since 1935, moving there from Emporia. Fred attended Ottawa high School, later attaining his G.E.D. He was a typesetter/printer in the graphic arts industry. For 37 years, from 1947 to 1984, he was co-owner of Central Check Company in Ottawa. In June of 1984, he was employed by Franklin County in the maintenance department at the courthouse, retiring in 1993. Fred served in the United States Army as a heavy equipment operator from September 14, 1943, to February 19, 1946, during World War II, attaining the rank of T-4. He was with the 170th Engineer Combat Battalion serving in the South Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Bronze Service Arrowhead Pacific Theater. He served 18 months and two days overseas duty. Fred was a member of First United Methodist Church, Methodist Men and Oxford service forum class; Scout Master of Troop 77 for 21 years; District Commissioner; chairman of Pride Community; and helped initiate city-wide trash pick-up and spring and fall clean-up, all in Ottawa. He was also a member of the Night Crawlers Camping Club. On November 10, 1946, Fred was united in marriage with Kathryn ‘Katie’ Metz in Ottawa. She survives, of their home. Mr. Adamson was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Amy Adamson; his brother, Hal Adamson; and his sister, Marie Haas. Fred is also survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Jerry Howarter of Garnett, Kris and Craig Chaney and Susie and Howard Jacob, all of Ottawa; his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Jerrie Adamson and Charles and Missy Adamson, all of Ottawa; his daughter, Wendy Jo Browning of Ottawa; his sister and brother-in-law, Twila Jean and Milton Jameson of Ottawa; 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials to Boy Scout Troop 77, First United Methodist Church, and Christian Care Cottage. Dengel and Son Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.” Page 5, Column 4: “Floyd G. Williams 1918-2005 Funeral services for Floyd G. Williams, 86, Garnett, were Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Gary Benjamin officiating. Interment was in Waverly Cemetery. Mr. Williams died Saturday, October 15, at Golden Heights Living Center. Floyd G. Williams was born November 24, 1918, at Waverly, the son of William Walter and Ida Louise (Schmidtt) Williams. He grew up in the Waverly area before graduating from Burlington High School with the Class of 1936. Following school, he worked in California for two years before returning to the Waverly area where he operated the Center Valley filling station before he entered the service. Floyd married Edna Mae Hess on July 30, 1940, in Marion. Two sons were born to this union. She preceded him in death on October 13, 1987. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, being stationed in the Philippines with a submarine unit. After the service, he returned to the Waverly area. In 1947, he opened Gambles store in Garnett with his brother. In the early 1960’s, he sold the Gambles store and then purchased the Sears and Roebucks in Garnett in 1967 and operated it until retiring in 1989. Floyd married Doris Hicks on May 30, 1991, in Garnett. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Rotary Club, Garnett Chamber of Commerce, and the First United Methodist Church, all of Garnett. Mr. Williams was also preceded in death by his son, Robert E. Williams; three brothers, one sister, and one great-granddaughter. Floyd is survived by his wife, Doris, of the home; his son, Larry Williams and his wife, Sandi Seitz-Williams of Cameron, MO; his stepson, Jim Hicks and his wife, Carol, of Riverside, CA; his stepdaughter, Marcia Meruy and her husband, Zionsville, IN; his daughter-in-law, Carolyn Williams of Emporia; his brothers, Harold Williams and Bob Williams, both of Waverly, and Don Williams of Marrero, AS; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. Music was provided by Jeanine Zentner, organist, and Scott Schulte, soloist. Musical selections included ‘How Great Thou Art’ and ‘Amazing Grace’. Casketbearers were Larry Williams, Jeff Williams, Philip Williams, Jeremy Williams, Jason Williams, and Jim Hicks. Honorary casketbearers were Don Smith, Ralph Tilton, Wayne Rolston, Stuart Williams, and Shawn Simons. The family suggests memorial to Golden Heights Living Center or Hospice Care of Kansas.
