November 2, 2005 The ADVOCATE Serving Anderson, Southern Franklin and Western Linn Counties Volume 9, No 87 Transcribed with permission of Vern Brown Page 5, Column 1: “Dorothy Ann Duvall 1931-2005 Dorothy Ann (Sigler) Duvall was born December 3, 1931, in Richmond, Franklin County, KS. She was the daughter of Alfred Oscar and Myrtle Naomi (Sechrest) Sigler. Dorothy made her home in Richmond nearly all of her years, until her death Thursday, October 27, 2005, in Olathe at the age of 73 years. Following her graduation from Richmond High School in 1950, Dorothy attended Ottawa University for two years and began teaching at Melvern Grade School. She later completed her college work at Emporia State University, earning a BS in elementary education in 1967. While attending college in the evenings and summers, she was also teaching at Princeton, then Richmond, and Central Heights. Dorothy retired in 1996 after 37 years of teaching. Her classrooms were always interesting and included many extras, such as pen pals in other countries, a time capsule for the fourth graders to have the year they graduated from high school, and other innovative ideas. With immense talent and a deep passion for music, Dorothy started piano lessons at an early age and fairly flew through the instruction she received. She took advanced lessons from Mrs. Kerr at Ottawa University and long before that, was giving piano lessons herself. Among her many students was Cathy Brockus, who shared a love of music with Dorothy as she grew older, so much that they created beautiful piano/organ duets that receive the highest praise from everyone who hears them. Dorothy began playing the piano at the Richmond Methodist Church when she was about 12 years old and continued until about a month ago. With perfect pitch and the ability to improvise more notes than one can imagine, her piano and organ offerings were beyond description. She played for many weddings and funerals and also for St. Therese Catholic Church at times. Dorothy also sang in college and church choirs and ensembles and had a tremendous knowledge of music. Her other passion was sewing, which nearly equaled her musical talent. She delighted in making articles for herself and others that were unusual or expressed the person’s personality. The grandchildren and others who have sewing items or craft pieces Dorothy made have true treasures to cherish. She also enjoyed having a variety of flowers and decorating her home. In addition to the United Methodist Church, Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Women, Richmond Community Museum Association, Night Crawlers RV group, and was a former member of the Kansas National Education Association. In recent years, she and Marvin have been associated with Market America. Her family brought her much joy and pride, and she loved keeping up with all their activities and achievements. Dorothy’s ‘clippings’ have kept many family members and friends informed about countless topics. On August 28, 1964, Dorothy was united in marriage with Marvin Duvall in Topeka. He survived of their home. Also surviving are her three sons and their wives, Mike and Debi Mildfelt of Winfield, Daniel and Lisa Mildfelt of Chanute, and Todd and Joy Mildfelt, of Richmond; her daughter and her husband, Melanie and Jonathan Cook of Fort Tucker, AL; her brother and his wife, Robert and Beverly Sigler of Manhattan; her sister and her husband, Jane and Eugene O’Mara of Burlington; her 12 grandchildren, Ashli Mildfelt, Nick Mildfelt, Adam Mildfelt, Erica Mildfelt, Dallas Mildfelt, Natalie Mildfelt, Emily Mildfelt, Kenzie Mildfelt, Minta Bales, Chase Cook, Peighton Cook, and Ethan Cook; and her great-granddaughter, Faith Mildfelt.
