Mr. Handy has been cremated. He died Sunday, January 23, at his home. Phil Handy was born April 22, 1945, at Garnett, the son of Carl P. Handy, Sr. and Daisy (Dixon) Handy. He grew up and lived most of his life in the Garnett area and graduated from Garnett High School with the Class of 1963. He had lived in the Pomona area for the last 13 years. In the mid-1960’s, Phil lived in Kansas City, MO, for five years. He was currently employed with Air Technologies, Inc. of Ottawa, working as Facilities Manager for the last 17 years. From 1971 to 1988, he was employed with Commodore Homes of Ottawa. In the mid-1960’s, he was employed with Auto Parts and Color, and, later, Automotive Distribution, Inc., both of Kansas City, MO. Phil was a member of the National Rifle Association. Phil and Deb (Cope) Cargo were married October 18, 1991, at Lawrence. He was previously married to Alice Lutz on February 9, 1964. They later divorced. Mr. Handy was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Daisy Handy. Phil is survived by his wife, Deb, of the home; his sons, Chris Handy of Hillsdale, Joe Handy of Butler, MO, David Handy of Show Low, AZ, and David Thompson of Haysville; his daughter, Becki Cargo of Overland Park; his sister, Helen Jean Drake of Great Bend; and his grandchildren, Matt Handy, Sabra Handy, Chalene Hutton, and Rebecca Thompson.
