Charles Roy Shannon, vice-president of the Attica State Bank, is a native of Kansas. He was born on a farm in Butler county, September 13, 1875, and is a son of Henry and Ida Virginia (Comstock) Shannon. The father was born in McDonough county, Illinois, May 1, 1844, a son of William and Mary (Miller) Shannon, natives of Tennessee. Henry Shannon came to Kansas in 1872, and in 1879 he located on government land in Beulla township, Harper county, where he followed farming until 1907, when he retired. He has been a life long Democrat, and takes an active part in local politics. He was a member of the board of county commissioners from 1900 to 1903. He is a member of the Masonic lodge. When he came to Harper county, that section of the State was mostly wild and unbroken prairie. Wild game was abundant, and buffalo were still quite plentiful. In 1872 he and some other men, while on a buffalo hunt, killed sixteen buffaloes near where the town of Attica is now located. Henry Shannon and Ida Virginia Comstock were married, December 24, 1874. She was a native of Henderson county, Illinois, born June 10, 1858, and a daughter of John S. and Nancy Jane (Dickison) Comstock. To Henry Shannon and wife were born five children: Charles Roy, the subject of this sketch; Maude Helen, born October 12, 1879, married Henry Stith, June 20, 1903, and they have two children, Helen and Margaret; Ruby Jane, born March 24, 1881, married John Byrne, June 20, 1908, and they have one child, Wayne Shannon; Volda Lewis, born July 5, 1884, married Anna Meyer, October 20, 1908; James Earl, born June 11, 1886. Charles Roy Shannon was reared on a farm and educated in the public schools of Harper county and Wichita Business College. In 1903 he became bookkeeper in the Attica State Bank, and a year later entered the employ of the Security State Bank of Harper, in the same capacity. In 1905 he assisted in the organization of the Danville State Bank, Danville, Kans., and became the first cashier of that institution. He remained in that capacity until 1913, when he and Frank R. Zacharias and others purchased the Attica State Bank of Attica, Kans., and he became vice-president and active head of the bank, and has since practically directed the policy of that institution. This is one of the substantial banks of Harper county, and has a large and rapidly growing business. Mr. Shannon was married, November 1, 1905, at Attica, Kans., to Miss Helen, daughter of David Stith. For a history of the Stith family see sketch of Henry Dee Stith, in this volume. Mrs. Shannon was born April 15, 1884, at Medicine Lodge, Kans. Mr. and Mrs. Shannon have two children: Donald Henry, born at Danville, Kans., August 3, 1906, and Robert Stith, born at Danvile, Kans., June 21, 1911. Mr. Shannon is a Democrat, and a member of the Masonic lodge. He is one of the progressive and public spirited business men of Harper county, and is ever ready to lend his assistance to any movement for the social or commercial betterment of the community.
