Obituary of OSCAR G. RICHARD
Death of an Old Settler

Judge Oscar G. Richard, a resident of Eudora for almost sixty years and widely known throughout Douglas County, died at his home Sunday morning about 7 o'clock. Judge Richards was stricken with a paralytic stroke early last week, which left him helpless. He gradually grew weaker, and on Saturday lapsed into unconsciousness.

Oscar G. Richards was born January 12, 1836, at Napoleon, Jackson county, Michigan. His father was a pioneer in the west and a soldier in the Black Hawk war. His mother died when he was quite young. He received but a limited education in the schools, which he afterwards improved by diligent application. He was raised on a farm in Livingston County, Illinois, and when 20 years old joined General Lane's forces as they went thro' Illinois. With this band he came to Kansas from Illinois through Iowa and Nebraska and west of the then settlements in Kansas, to Topeka on what is known as Lane's road. Mr. Richards drove the first team on the laying out of that road and planted the first stake. --Lawrence Gazette.

Judge Richards was a grandfather of Clayton Wyatt of Oskaloosa, who went to Eudora on Tuesday of last week to attend the funeral.
