Mrs. H. C. Lee died at 11 o¹clock last night at her home on Atchison street between Ninth and Tenth. She was 78 years old, and

leaves a husband who is in his 86th year. She was the mother of Mrs. T. B. Platt and Mrs. Joel Hyatt. The funeral will take place

tomorrow at 3 p.m., Rev. Mr. Proper of the Baptist church officiating.

Kaaz, Henry Julius Obituary

Atchison Daily Globe - Monday, Nov. 7, 1966

Henry J Kaaz, 76, 1036 Kearney Street died suddenly yesterday evening at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Atchison and a retired purchasing at the Rockwell - LFM plant.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. R. W. Fricke officiating. The body will lie in state for an hour at the church before the services. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Members of the family will meet friends tomorrow from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sawin-Dyer Funeral Home.

Mr. Kaaz was born June 1, 1890, in Atchison a son of ERNEST and FREDERICKA KAAZ. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and was graduated from the Atchison Business College.

He retired as purchasing agent at LFM in 1956 after being with that firm 44 years. Prior to that he was employed at the A.J. Harwl Hardware Co. and at the office of the Santa Fe Railroad.

During World War I he served 14 months overseas in France with Company K, and was a member of the Fleming - Jackson - Seever American Legion Post No. 6.

Mr. Kaaz was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served it as an elder, deacon, and Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years.

He and the former MINNIE THADEN were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Nov. 26, 1919.

Mr. Kaaz enjoyed his family and home, his work in the church, liked traveling, and derived much pleasure from working in his flower and vegetable garden.

His children and their families held a reunion at the home last Father's Day.

Surviving are Mrs. Kaaz of the home; three sons, John H. Kaaz, Brown Deer, Wis., Edward (Dick) Kaaz, Kansas City; one daughter, Mrs. Don (Lucy) Warnke, Hollywood, Fla.; two sisters, Miss Freda Kaaz and Mrs. Sam Estes, both of Atchison; eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Three brothers and a sister died previously.

KAAZ, Mrs. Henry (Minnie) nee Thaden Obituary

Mrs. Minnie Kaaz, 78, died at 2:05 a.m. today at Cray Senior Manor after being in failing health several months. For many years her home was at 1036 Kearney Street.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Robert N. Ziegler officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The casket will lie in state at the church an hour before the services. The family suggests memorials be given to the Trinity Lutheran Scholl Endowment Fund.

Members of the family will be at the Sawin-Dyer Mortuary from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday when friends may call. Mrs. Kaaz was born March 3, 1895, in Atchison, a daughter of JOHN and BARBARA LOUISE THADEN, and was a lifelong resident. She attended Trinity Lutheran and the Atchison Public Schools.

She worked in the store of her father, the J.H. Thaden Wallpaper and Decorating Co. at 304 Commercial Street, for a time before she was married. On Nov. 26, 1919, She and HENRY KAAZ were married. He died Nov. 6, 1966. Mr. Kaaz was purchasing agent at the LFM plant 44 years before he retired in 1956. Mrs. Kaaz was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was an avid grower of African violets for many years.

Surviving are three sons, John H. Kaaz, Goleta, Calif., Edward R. Kaaz, St. Louis, and Richard D. Kaaz, Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. Lucy Warnke, Hollywood, Fla.; five sisters, Mrs. Alfred Ostergard, Miss Louise Thaden, and Mrs. Rose Malone, all of Atchison, Mrs. William Seever, Independence, Mo., and Mrs. J.W. Dyer, Denver, and nine grandchildren. A sister preceded her in death.

Julius E. Kaaz, 76, 326 Pine, founder of the Julius E. Kaaz Construction Co. and a former Leavenworth City Commissioner, died at 2:40 a.m. today at Cushing Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for two weeks.

Mr. Kaaz was born August 15, 1891 at Atchison, the son of JULIUS H. and IDA SCHMELING KAAZ. He was married to Miss LYDIA HOFFMAN at Atchison on Dec.5, 1917. They moved to Leavenworth in 1927. Mr. Kaaz founded the Julius E. Kaaz Construction Company and was active in the company until his death. He was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and had held several offices in both the Trinity Lutheran and St. Paul Lutheran Church here.

Mr. Kaaz was a member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Mutual Building and Loan Association, Board of Directors of Cushing Memorial Hospital, former member of the Board of Directors of the Leavenworth Country Club, a trustee member of Mt. Muncie Cemetery, a member of the Leavenworth Rotary Club, and the Association of General Contractors of America. He was elected commissioner of Leavenworth streets and public improvements in 1949, and served until 1955.

Other than his widow, Mrs. LYDIA D. KAAZ of the home, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Marcus (Dorothea) Braun, Leawood; one son, J. David Kaaz, 400 S. Esplande; three brothers, Robert J. Kaaz, Kansas City, Kan., Otto H. Kaaz, Wichita, and Arthur O., Kaaz, 601 Miami; seven grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Eldon Luehring died in 1964.

Funeral will be Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Marvin Kuhlman, pastor, will officate. Burial well be in Mt. Muncie Cemetery. The body will be a Davis Chapel after 12 noon Tuesday. The family suggests memorials.

KAAZ, Julius Herman Obituary

Atchison Daily Globe - Friday, Nov. 28, 1941

Julius KAAZ, Sr., 87, retired planing mill operator and a resident of Atchison 46 years before going to Leavenworth in 1927, died yesterday at his home there. He had been in failing health several months.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Leavenworth with interment in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. The Rev. George Koettner, Nortonville, and the Rev. Howard Miller of St. Paul's will officiate. The body is at the residence, 518 North Fifth Street, in Leavenworth. The Davis Mortuary is in charge.

Born in Prussia, March 26, 1854, Mr. Kaaz learned the carpenter trade in his native land and in 1881 came to America, settling at Atchison the same year. His first job at Atchison was cutting cordwood and later he was employed making riprap for the Missouri River. Eventually he obtained employment as a carpenter, working for $1.50 a day. After a year, Mr. Kaaz began contracting for himself, later forming a partnership with Henry Braun. The partnership was dissolved in 1909. Mr. Kaaz erected his first planing mill at Atchison in 1907. The firm operated at Atchison until 1927 when it was reorganized under the firm name of Kaaz Woodworking and Fixture Company and moved to Leavenworth. Soon after being there, Mr. Kaaz retired from active business and his sons took over management of the concern, which engages in general wood-working and contracting business.

Mr. Kaaz married MISS IDA SCHMELING of Atchison in 1883. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Leavenworth.

Surviving are two daughters, Miss Helena Kaaz and Miss Lydia Kaaz both of the home; six sons, Emily, Robert, Julius, Jr., Otto, Fred and Arthur Kaaz, all of Leavenworth and 16 grandchildren.

Kaaz, Mrs. Ernest (Fredericka) nee Noering

Mrs. Ernest Kaaz dies following a short illness. Bronchitis and pneumonia, following influenza caused the death of Mrs. Ernest Kaaz, 1024 Oak Street, this morning, at 9:40 o'clock. She had been ill only three weeks. Her condition became serious Christmas night, and news of her death will cause keen regret in Atchison, because she was a splendid woman.

Her husband died January 2, 1922. Mrs. Kaaz is survived by seven children, 21 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

The funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon. Services in the home will begin 2:15 o'clock. Services in Trinity Lutheran Church will begin fifteen minutes later, the Rev. F.W.C. Jesse officiating. Burial will occur at Mt. Vernon cemetery. Mrs. Kaaz was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church 45 years.

Mrs. Ernest Kaaz was greatly loved by her family, relatives and friends. She was a modest, well-mannered woman, whose life was devoted to her, family, friends and church. She had all of the old fashioned virtues that are endearing.

Mrs. FREDERICKA Kaaz was born in Marienthal, Pommern, Germany, December 6, 1849. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. FREDERICK NOERING. She was married to ERNEST KAAZ, in Germany, January 22, 1874, and they came to Atchison from Germany in1882.

The surviving children of Mrs. Kaaz are Albert F. Kaaz, Mrs. Henry Chew, Mrs. S.S. (Minnie) Estes, William, Henry and a Miss Freda Kaaz, all of Atchison, Frank E. Kaaz, of Sheridan, Wyoming

KAAZ, Mrs. Julius H. (Ida Wilhelmina) nee Schmeling Obituary

Atchison Daily Globe - Monday, June 27, 1927

Mrs. Wilhelmina KAAZ, wife of Julius Kaaz, Sr., died yesterday at the Kaaz home, 1024 Laramie Street. Her death followed an illness of more than six months duration, during the last three months of which she was bedfast and resulted from complications of diseases. Mrs. Kaaz was 71 years of age at her death, and had been a resident of Atchison for more than half a century. She was the mother of a splendid family of nine children, eight of whom survive her.

Mrs. Kaaz, whose maiden name was Miss Wilhelmina SCHMELING, was born September 6, 1856, at Plathe, Pommerania, Germany, and came to Atchison with her mother and a sister, Amelia in 1875, shortly after the death in Germany of her father, JOHN SCHMELING.

She made her home here with her sister, Mrs. Henry Jacobs, until her marriage to Mr. Kaaz, November 4, 1883.

Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Misses Lydia and Helena Kaaz, at home; six sons, Emil, Robert, Julius, Otto, Fred and Arthur Kaaz, all of Atchison; four brothers, Frank, August and William Schmeling, Superior, Nebraska, and Robert Schmeling of Atchison; three sisters, Miss Augusta Schmeling, Superior Neb., Mrs. Henry Jacob, Atchison, and Mrs. Henry Schwarnweber, Des Moines, Ia., and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Trinity Lutheran Church at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, preceded by short services at the residence at 2:15 o'clock. Interment will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the following nephews: Robert Jacobs, Kansas City, Kan., Paul Schmeling, Superior, Neb., and Henry Schwarnweber, Albert and Henry Kaaz and Ralph Baker of Atchison.

Atchison Daily Globe - Jan. 2, 1901

Daniel KAAZ, age 85, died at 10 o'clock this morning at the home of his son, Julius Kaaz, at 1014 Laramie Street, of old age. He had been sick for a long time. He came to this country nineteen years ago from Marienthal, Prussia, but has not been actively engaged in business in this country. He was a contractor in Prussia. He leaves four children and follows: Ernest Kaaz, Julius Kaaz, Mrs. August (Wihelmina) Loeprick, of Oak Street, and Mrs. Gottfried (Ernestina) Schmeling, of Laramie Street, all living in Atchison. The funeral will probably occur for the German Lutheran Church on Eighth Street Friday afternoon.

Atchison Daily Globe Thursday, Jan. 24, 1924

Mrs. Wilhelmina Loeprick, 81 years of age, died very suddenly at 8:30 o'clock this morning at the home her daughter, Mrs. H. L. Stork, 316 North Ninth Street, with whom she had made her home for the past five years. Death was caused from heart trouble and old age. When Mrs. Stork entered the room this morning she found her dead in bed, her death evidently having occurred a short time previously. Mrs. Loeprick had bee failing in health for the past three years, but was not bedfast, and had been able to be about the house within the past few days.

She was born in Marienthal, Pommern, Germany, August 23, 1842, and came to this country with her husband, AUGUST LEOPRICK, in 1883, settling in Atchison. Mr. Leoprick was a carpenter, and followed that trade here. His death occurred many years ago (Nov. 21, 1889). Mrs. Leoprick lived in California for several years, returning to Atchison five years ago to reside at the Stork home.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Stork and Mrs. John Baker, of Atchison; Mrs. Amelia Smith and Mrs. Ruedinger, both of Los Angeles, and one brother, Julius Kaaz, of Atchison.

Funeral arrangements will not be made until word has been received from her daughters in Los Angeles.

Funeral for Otto Henry Daniel Kaaz, 76, Wichita, who died there Sunday, will be Wednesday at 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wichita.

Mr. Kaaz was born Aril 7, 1893, at Atchison, a son of Julius and Ida Schmeling Kaaz. He lived in Leavenworth 20 years and was a building contractor. He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the Lutheran Church at Wichita.

Surviving him are the widow, Mrs. Alice Weese Kaaz, of the home; two sons, Daniel K. Kaaz, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kerwin D. Kaaz, Morgan City, La.; a daughter, Mrs. Alice Marie Fairfield, Medford, Ore.; two brothers, Robert Kaaz, Kansas City, Kan., and Arthur O. Kaaz, 6601 Miami; and nine grandchildren.

Burial will be in Wichita Park Cemetery. The body is at the Cochran Mortuary, Wichita.

Kaaz Funeral Tomorrow

Funeral services for Mrs. Henrietta Caroline Kaaz, 82, who died yesterday at the Atchison Hospital, will be held at the Stanton Chapel at 2 p.m. tomorrow, the Rev. Robert W. Fricke officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

At her request memorials to the building fund of Trinity Lutheran Church are suggested by the family.

She was born in Atchison November 5, 1878, a daughter of Ernest and Philibena Schaback Young and resided here all her life. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

On Feb. 2, 1907, she was married to Albert Kaaz, who died October 11, 1952.

She suffered a broken hip Oct. 14, 1952, and after eight months at the Atchison Hospital had been confined to her home, 931 Laramie until taken back to the hospital last week. Until her fatal illness she had been able to get about her home in a walker.

She leaves her sister, Mrs. Anna Johnson of the home, who took

care of her for eight years, her brother, August Young, Atchison, a

nephew, Robert Young, Santa Monica, Calif., two nieces, Mrs. Lillian

Durrett, Kansas City and Miss Dorothea Young, Atchison, her aunt, Mrs.

Chris Berntsen, Weston, and five cousins, Miss Irene Berntsen, Miss Etta

Vess, both of Weston, and Mrs. Alfred Seip, Mrs. C. C. Cooper and, Mrs.

Claude Hess, all of Atchison. Her parents and a brother, Ernest Young,

are deceased.

Kaaz, Albert F. Obituary

Albert F. Kaaz, 70, died his morning at 4:30 o'clock at his residence, 931 Laramie. Death was due to apoplexy. He had been ill the past three months and bedfast for the last two weeks.

Funeral services will be held from the Stanton & Stanton Mortuary Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. Edward Hauer, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery. The body will remain at the funeral home until time of the burial and the family will be at the funeral home this evening and tomorrow evening.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kaaz, Albert Kaaz was born in Germany, May 16, 1875, and came to this country in 1881, residing in
Atchison. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and had been a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

A well-known carpenter here, Mr. Kaaz learned the trade under his uncle the late Julius Kaaz and Henry Braun. Until recently he was employed by Mr. Braun, a local contractor.

February 2, 1907, he married the former Miss Henrietta Young, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Young, at Berkeley, Calif. And with the exception of the two years spent there they have resided in Atchison.

Besides his wife he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Harry Chew, Mrs. Sam Estes and Miss Freda Kaaz, and three brothers, William and Henry J. Kaaz, Atchison, and Frank F. Kaaz, Sheridan, Wyo.

Kaaz, William E. Obituary

William E. (Cotton) Kaaz, 77, a life-long resident of Atchison and one of the eldest members of the Carpenters' Union, was found dead at 10:50 a.m. yesterday at his apartment, 927 South Sixth Street, by his niece, Mrs. Bailous Turpin.

Mr. Kaaz had suffered with a heart condition for a number of years. Dr. Wayne O. Wallace, district coroner, said death has due to natural causes.

Mr. Kaaz had lived alone since the death of his wife, Marguerite, Nov. 11, 1962.

For a number of years Mr. Kaaz had an apartment at 719 ½ Commercial Street. He moved to his present home last June.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kaaz, William Kaaz was born in Atchison Jan. 4, 1888. He learned the carpenter's trade as a youth and followed it until his retirement.

July 26, 1950, he married Marguerite Elizabeth Murphy, formerly of Kansas City, in Atchison.

Mr. Kaaz leaves two sisters, Miss Freda Kaaz and Mrs. Sam Estes, both of whom lives on Route 4, and a brother, Henry J. Kaaz, 1036 Kearney Street, who is a patient at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Sawin & Dyer Chapel, the Rev. Harold Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the Sawin & Dyer Funeral Home.

KAAZ, Ernest Julius Obituary

Ernest Kaaz, an Atchison carpenter, and a brother of Julius Kaaz, the contractor and manufacturer, died at his home, 1024 Oak street, at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Death was caused from a cancer, which developed on one of his ears two and half years ago. Although in much pain, Mr. Kaaz bore his sufferings with great fortitude and never complained.

Ernest Kaaz was born in Marienthal, Pommern, Germany, May 4, 1845. In 1881 he came to America and located in Atchison where he had lived since with his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Kaaz have reared a fine family of children and with the exception on one they are all living in Atchison. Mr. Kaaz was always an industrious man and a good husband. He devoted nearly all his time to the welfare of his family and his work.

He is survived by his wife, four sons, and three daughters. They are Albert Kaaz, 934 Laramie Street; Frank Kaaz, Sheridan, Wyoming; William Kaaz, 517 North Eighth Street; Henry Kaaz, 612 North Eleventh Street; Mrs. Chew, 1019 Ash Street; Mrs. Sam Estes, near Forest Park; and Miss Freda Kaaz, who lives at home.

Kaaz, Frieda nee Thaden Obituary

Mrs. Frieda Kaaz, 70, 1130 Kearney street, died suddenly Friday night at her home. She had been in failing health since her retirement in 1964 when she retired from her position as a bookkeeper for the Blish, Mize & Silliman, Inc.

She was born Aug. 3, 1896, in Atchison, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Thaden. She attended Trinity Lutheran School and Atchison Business College. She was a lifetime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Kaaz was employed by the Klostermeier Brothers Hardware Store, which was an Atchison firm for many years, and the C. A. Wright Coal Col, prior to being employed by Blish-Mize.

She is survived by a son Kerwin Kaaz of Houston, Texas, six sisters, Mrs. Henry Kaaz, Mrs. Alfred Ostergard, Mrs. Jay Dyer, all of Atchison, Miss Louise Thaden and Mrs. William Seeber, St. Joe, and Mrs. C. V. Malone, Chicago; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert W. Fricke officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church preceding the service. Family will receive friends 7 to 9 this evening at the Sawin and Dyer Chapel.

Mrs. Kaaz's birthday was celebrated with her son, Kerwin, and family who traveled here last month especially for the occasion. The Kerwin Kaaz family will be here today.

Miss Freda Kaaz, 80, 616 Santa Fe Street, died this morning at the Atchison Hospital. She was a retired employee of Blish, Mize & Silliman, Inc.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Ziegler, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

The casket will lie in state at the church an hour before the services.

Members of the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Stanton Mortuary. They suggest that memorials may be left at the mortuary.

Miss Kaaz was born Sept. 2, 1894, in Atchison. She was a daughter of Ernest and Fredericka Noring(Noering) Kaaz.

She attended Trinity Lutheran school and began working for Blish, Mize & Silliman, Inc. in 1918. She retired in 1966, after working as a billing clerk for more than 47 years.

Miss Kaaz was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

August Loeprick, aged 50 years, died at 11 o'clock last night of a congestive chill, at his residence, 1021 Oak street. The funeral will take place on Sunday.
