Roy Arterburn and Miss Dora Allen were united in marriage at the bride's residence yesterday evening, December 24, 1901, at 8 o'clock. Rev. J. F. Irwin, pastor of the M. E. church, officiated. The young couple is so well and favorably known in Medicine Lodge that words from us are unnecessary. The groom is engaged in the real estate business with A. M. Houchin and the bride is an accomplished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Arterburn begin life under most favorable prospects. Eli Benedict and Mrs. Beatrice Snodgrass were married at Alva on Tuesday evening August 4th. They left for New Mexico the following day on a wedding tour. Thomas Jackson Best and Ethel Simmons were united in marriage at the M. E. church in this city on Thursday, January 8, 1903 at 9 p.m. Presiding Elder Ebright assisted by Rev. W. J. Weber performed the ceremony. A large number of friends of the contracting parties witnessed the marriage rites. Both parties are so well and favorably known to the people of Medicine Lodge that we deem an extensive article in these columns unnecessary. Mr. and Mrs. Best left on the morning train for Kansas City and other points and will return in about two weeks to make their home in Medicine Lodge. Marriage: We glean from the Wichita Eagle an account of the marriage of Miss Florence L. Hitchcock to Mr. H.W. Burch. The bride resides in Guthrie and the groom at Wichita. They will reside in Wichita where Mr. Burch is engaged in business. Miss Hitchcock was at one time one of Medicine Lodge's most charming ladies and has many friends in our city. Married: Mr. Donald Carmichael and Miss Ora Sims were united in marriage at the residence of the bride's brother in this city last Thursday evening, January 12, 1899, Rev. J.F. Irwin, pastor of the M.E. church officiating. The groom is the son of Mrs. D.M. Carmichael of this city, and the bride is a daughter of Perry Sims who formerly resided at Sun City and who was one of Barber county's leading citizens in early days. William R. Cavin of Moore township and Miss Dollie Colborn of Nippawalla township were united in marriage on Wednesday, January 20, 1909, by Rev. C. A. Kitch of Kiowa. The groom is one of Barber county's most energetic and prosperous young farmers and sustains an enviable reputation for integrity and personal worth. He is a most cordial young man and easy of acquaintance and is well known in the southern half of the county. The bride is the charming daughter of F. C. Colborn and wife, one of Barber county's best families. She has been identified with the county's educational progress for a number of years and enjoys an acquaintance throughout the greater portion of the county. She is happily endowed with a most pleasant disposition and is a social favorite in her community. The Index counts it a pleasure and a privilege to extend to this most worthy couple sincere congratulations and the hope that their skies throughout life may always be as radiant as they are at this, the initial morning of their new and mutual relationship. Married: At Richmond school house, on Wednesday evening, June 22nd, at 9:30 o'clock, Mr. Chas. J. Chitwood, of Richmond, and Miss Mattie B. Freeman, of Kansas City, Mo., were united in marriage, Rev. J.H. Williams officiating. The groom is a son of Mr. P. Chitwood, and is a young man of sterling worth. The bride is a niece of W.P. Ward, and is a highly accomplished young lady. At the hour above mentioned, as the audience arose to their feet, Mrs. H.A. Seaton, who presided at the organ, began the wedding march, the bride and groom entered the house and marched down the carpeted aisle, preceded by six little flower girls who stationed themselves three on each side of a large marriage bell under which the bride and groom stood while the ceremony was performed, after which the happy couple retired as they came, followed by the good wishes of scores of friends. A wedding that will be of much interest to the people of Medicine Lodge, is that of Miss Mary Chapin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Chapin residing east of this city, to Mr. Harry Clark of Wichita, Saturday, November 3rd, at the Congregational church in Kansas City. Miss Chapin is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chapin and grew to womanhood here and was very, very popular in the social circles of the younger set. After completing her education in our schools she entered the Wichita College of Music, graduating in piano last spring. It was during her study at this place that she met Mr. Clark and their romance gradually ripened into love, naturally, culminated into marriage at Kansas City, where the bride was studying flute at Horner's Institute. Miss Chapin is a talented pianist and has more than pleased her hearers in many recitals. She has scores of friends who will never forget her loving ways and charming manners. The groom is a stranger to the people of Medicine Lodge, but we understand he is a young man of integrity and wisdom, and is to be congratulated on securing Miss Chapin as a companion through life. Mr. Man Clingerman and Miss Maggie High, both of Kiowa, were united in marriage at the Central Hotel parlor in this city on Monday, December 23rd., by Probate Judge Lacy. We used to live neighbor to the groom when he was an urchin of eight summers and the quarrels and good times we had are as vivid as though it had been yesterday. How times does fly! On Monday, June 30, 1902, at the residence of R. S. Field in Kansas City, Charles B. Currie and Mrs. Lilah M. Field were united in marriage. They arrived home on Tuesday night and at once began housekeeping at the attractive Currie ranch adjoining this city. On Saturday night about a dozen couples of the older set "old timers," as it were, waited on Mr. and Mrs. Currie with all the regalia and incidentals necessary to make life merry. Mr. Currie did the proper thing in the way of fixing them up with refreshments and the "meeting" was enjoyed to the fullest extent. The parties to this marriage are two of the county's leading citizens and have contributed much to the upbuilding of the county. They have a very wide acquaintanceship and are honored and respected by all. The union is a most happy one and their friends take pleasure in congratulating them. Roscoe Davis, of Sharon township and Miss Nellie Martin of this city were joined together in the sacred bonds of matrimony on Thursday, October 16, 1902, at the residence of the officiating pastor, Rev. F. S. Atwell. The groom is the oldest son of E. C. Davis, our present county surveyor. He is noted as the foremost base ball player in this part of the state and could enter the league at any time he might desire. He is a young man of marked ability, honor and integrity and is well qualified to engage in any business or profession he may choose. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Married: Mr. James Dobbs and Miss Joy Holmes were united in marriage at the residence of the bride's mother in Kansas City, Kansas, on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 1898. They arrived in this city on Saturday, December 3rd, and are now at home to their friends in the neat and beautiful house on east Kansas avenue, recently purchased by the groom. James Dobbs, of the Dobbs & Shaw firm, is one of the most extensive cattle dealers of the Southwest; prudent in business, cordial in disposition, and justly enjoys the confidence of his acquaintanceship both in a business and a social capacity. Miss Joy Holmes grew to womanhood in this city but has lived in Kansas City during the past four years. She has always been a favorite among those who enjoyed her acquaintance and is a lady of rare accomplishment and refinement. It is not often that a young couple start on the voyage of married life with such flattering prospects and if the kind wishes of a host of friends avail anything their prosperity and happiness will never abate. Eugene C. Downtain and Miss Myrtle E. Jarvis of Kiowa, were granted marriage license by Probate Judge Gleason on Friday, August 28th. The groom is a nephew of L. A. Downtain of Moore township. Until recently he resided in Texas but is now permanently located in Kiowa. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Jarvis of Elwood township. She is now with the J. W. Metz Mer. The Marriage of Robert Stillman Field and Jennie Beatrice MacGregor was solemnized at the Episcopal church in this city Monday, January 6, 1902 at 7 o'clock p.m., in the presence of many invited friends. Rev. L. L. Swan, rector of the church officiated. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity and many failed to gain admittance. The bride's costume was of White Mousseline de sole with trimmings of appliqu' and a veil of white illusion, and carried a large and beautiful bouquet of bride's roses. The groom wore the customary black broadcloth. Fred R. Ellis officiated in the capacity of best man and Miss Margaret Keller was bridesmaid. John MacGregor, father of the bride, gave her away. The marriage ceremony under the Episcopal service was very beautiful and impressive. Mr. Field is one of Barber county's most favorite sons and a young lawyer of exceptionally good qualifications. He was brought up in this county and counts his friends by the score. He is at present connected with the law firm of Beardsley, Gregory & Kirshner of Kansas City. His strict honesty and close application to business has won him a name of which he may feel justly proud. The bride is one of our fairest daughters. She, too, grew from childhood to womanhood in Barber county. For the past eight years she has been closely identified with our educational interests and ranked among the county's most able instructors. Her kindly disposition, her literary accomplishments and her sociability are the elements which have contributed to her personal popularity. She is the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John MacGregor, one of our oldest and most respected families, residing eight miles southeast of the city. Mr. and Mrs. Field enter life's journey under most favorable circumstances and brightest prospects. Their qualifications in many respects are superior and their talents united will certainly bring great happiness, prosperity and rich blessings. The Index counts it a privilege to be numbered among the host of friends of this estimable couple and it is indeed a pleasure to extend heartiest congratulations and fondest wishes. Married: The marriage of Mr. Walter S. Gant to Miss Josie Wood was solemnized at the home of the bride's parents in Winfield last Wednesday, September 21, 1898, at 11 o'clock a.m. The young people are thoroughly known in this part of Barber county. Mr. Gant is the younger son of Mr. and Mrs. R.V. Gant of this city, and an energetic, progressive young man. He is at present engaged in handling stock and has formerly served in the capacity of deputy in the offices of county treasurer and clerk. His disposition and habits are of an enviable and high character and he is fortunately possessed with the elements that enter into good citizenship. He will be a model husband. The bride was formerly a resident of this city, but removed with her parents to Winfield several years ago. She is a lady of refinement and culture and her virtues can only be measured by her excellence of disposition and sociability. Mr. Gant is to be congratulated upon winning such a valuable prize. Married: On Sunday, February 12, 1899, Mr. Edward C. Goatley and Miss Della May Burner were united in the bonds of matrimony, Rev. J.R. Irwin officiating. Mr. Goatley came to Medicine Lodge last fall and has been employed in several capacities since he has been with us. While he is a stranger to many of us, he is fast making friends and is recognized as an industrious, energetic and upright young man. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mr. H.N. Burner and has grown from childhood in this city and vicinity. She is a pleasant and handsome young lady and will make a model wife. Mr. Graves is a stranger to Barber county people, but his bride is well and favorably known to many of our people, especially in the north part of the county. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Strohl who enjoy the esteem and respect of all. Marriage Chimes. Married on Thursday, April 16, 1885, at the residence of the bride's parents, three miles northwest of Hazelton, Mr. F. K. Grigsby, of Milan, Ks., to Miss Mary O. Dunbar, of Hazelton, Ks., Rev. Chas. H. Burleigh officiating. Promptly at 7 o'clock p.m. the prospective bride and groom appeared before the officiating minister in the parlor of the neat little house of Mr. O. H. Dunbar, and in a very fitting and neat manner Rev. C. H. Burleigh pronounced them husband and wife, according to the ordinance of God and the ceremony of the M. E. church. After receiving the congratulations of relatives and friends, the latter of whom to the number of thirty or more had gathered to witness the auspicious event, and new bride and groom led the way to the supper table which was loaded down with all the delicacies and substantial eatables which mother Dunbar known so well how to prepare. Just as they were about through supper Klinck's Cornet Band, of Hazelton, appeared upon the scene and rendered some of their choicest music, and soon the boys were surrounded by bride, groom, parents, and friends, and invited into the house to partake of the wedding banquet. To say that the boys enjoyed it highly, and did ample justice to that splendid supper, but family conveys the idea. Those who have been out with a band on similar occasions know that the boys are always good hands at the table. After supper was over music, song, repartee wiled the hours away until towards the noon of night, when the band rendered some more good music and all the guests left for their homes, wishing Mr. and Mrs. F. K. Grigsby many happy returns of the day. The young couple left for their future home in Sumner county, Friday morning. Our printers express thanks for a liberal supply of wedding cake. Married: The marriage of Mr. Albert G. Hendricks and Miss Lena Clements took place at the home of the bride's father, Milton H. Clements, in Turkey Creek township on Sunday, July 31, 1898. Rev. Owens, of Sun City, officiated at the ceremony. The wedding was a characteristic one from the fact that both parties are mute and deaf and the vows were taken by means of an interpreter. Uncle Milt, as he is known throughout the entire county, is one of those good natured, whole souled men that enliven a community and he concluded to make this occasion an old-time picnic. Accordingly 200 invited guests were present, which, by the way, included the whole neighborhood, and one of the best dinners ever spread in the county was served. The old settlers of the northwestern part of the county were well represented and it goes without saying that they had a good time calling up reminiscences, incidents and adventures in the early days when the buffalo and the mountain lion held full sway. And in this Uncle Milt was equal to any of them; he had as much experience of pioneer life as any man in Kansas, and is a pretty good man yet. That Sunday's gathering is one of which he can well feel proud and those who attended have every reason to be thankful for the royal entertainment. When it comes to counting friends none can county more of them than Uncle Milt Clements. We are indebted to Commissioner H.C. Walker for an account of the day's festivities. Married: Mr. Frank P. Hewitt and Miss Ida Sleeper were married at the home of the bride's parents in Valley township on Sunday night, December 25, 1898 - Christmas night. Only a few friends witnessed the ceremony. The bride was dressed in her beautiful graduation gown and was indeed attractive and beautiful. Mr. Hewitt is an industrious and prosperous farmer and the bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. V.C. Sleeper, formerly of Wellington. The Index extends sincerest congratulations. Homer F. Hoagland and Alice M. Rowley, both of Sun City, were united in marriage by Probate Judge Lacy last Thursday, June 5, 1902. Married: On Wednesday night, November 3, 1898, at the residence of the bride's sister, Mrs. Lillian Herr, Mr. George W. Horney and Miss Ora K. Painter assumed the vows of husband and wife. Rev. J.F. Irwin, pastor of the M.E. church, officiated. The contracting parties are well known to the people of Medicine Lodge and vicinity and need no introduction. Mr. Horney came to Medicine Lodge in the city's early days and has been actively identified with her business interests since that time. He is recognized as one of our most substantial citizens and is respected by everybody. Married: The marriage of Judge Alfred M. Jackson and Miss Lydia Robie was solemnized at Greeley, Colorado, on Tuesday of last week, July 19th. The bride is a sister to Mrs. A.L. Noble, and has visited here frequently and is therefore well known and a great favorite among our people. The groom is an ex-judge of one of the districts of this state but recently removed to Salt Lake City. We clip the following account from the Denver Republican of July 20th. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Noble, of this city, attended the wedding: Greeley, Colo., July 19. A quiet wedding was solemnized at high noon today in Trinity Episcopal church. Judge Alfred M. Jackson of Salt Lake City and Miss Lydia Robie of Bath, N.Y., were united, the Rev. Frank W. Henry performing the ceremony. Only a few relatives and friends were present. The groom is an eminent lawyer of the Mormon capital. The bride is a prepossessing brunette, bright, vivacious and witty. She has been visiting her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Married: Peter J. Jackson and Lucy Wilfley were married at the residence of Thomas Carter and wife last Wednesday, March 13th. Judge J.L. Brady performed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson are colored people of Nashville, he bride being a daughter of Fenton Wilfley, of this city. The boys around the Court House tell a good joke on Judge Lacy concerning this marriage. After the Judge had issued the license he put on a few additional airs of dignity and told the couple to stand up and he would soon do the job. After a little hesitation and evident embarrassment, the couple informed His Honor that Judge Brady had been engaged for the occasion. There were several spectators in the room and if Judge Lacy would have invested in a box of cigars just about that time, he could have avoided a great deal of sport at his expense. John W. Lewis and Mae McAlister, both of Kiowa, were joined in wedlock at the M. E. church, Tuesday afternoon, December 24, 1901, by Rev. J. F. Irwin. This is the first and only couple married in the new church to date. After the ceremony L. T. Williams presented a china fruit dish in accordance with an offer made after the church was completed, to the effect that he would give a present to the first couple married in the new church. The delayed news of the marriage of Herbert Lindley, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Lindley, of this city, to Miss Mary Tomson, of Everton, Mo., was received at this office Monday. The wedding took place in Kansas City on July 25th. Mr. Lindley is in the employ of the Southwestern Hardware Co., at Liberal, Kansas, where he and his bride will make their home. The groom grew to manhood and received his early education in this city, and although he has been in this community but little during the past few years, he has a wide acquaintance still living in Medicine Lodge. The following is copied from the Washington County Iowa Daily Journal. Mr. McCreedy was a resident in our county in '96-'97, and taught a term of school here. He was visiting with his sisters, Mrs. James and Thomas McGuire, and made many friends in this county. He made another visit here again last fall. The marriage of Miss Mae Love, daughter of Mr. S. R., Love, of Ainsworth, Iowa, to Mr. J. H. McCreedy, took place Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1901, at the residence of the bride's father. The bridal party entered the parlor at noon to the strains of the wedding march played by Mrs. A. McCreedy and took their places beneath a smilax arch, Rev. Davis officiating in the presence of a company of friends and relatives. The bride wore cream wool and carried white roses. Miss Sadie Davis was maid of honor and Mr. S. A. Love was best man. Dr. Leon L. Osborn of this city and Miss Nellie Johnson of Greensburg, Kansas, were united in marriage at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. L. Osborn in Greensburg, Wednesday evening, January 27, 1909. Mr. and Mrs. Osborn arrived in this city on Friday and on Saturday afternoon and evening the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Osborn, received complimentary to the bride and groom, at their palatial home five miles west of this city. The groom is a dentist by profession, graduating several years ago from a reputable college and practicing since that time in Greensburg and occasionally in surrounding towns. A month ago he purchased Dr. McAlister's office in this city and is now located in the practice here. He is a young man of unusual attainments, both professionally and socially. He was brought up here and is well known by everybody and has scores of friends. The bride at one time resided here. She is a niece of Mrs. G. L., Osborn, formerly of this city, and is known by many of our people. She is a pleasant cordial lady of fine address and excellent accomplishment. Mr. and Mrs. Osborn are occupying J. E. Married: To the Editors of the Index: On the night of the 24th day of January, 1899, some twenty of us were invited to go to Mr. Marr's to witness the marriage of Walter Small, of Sterling, Kansas, to Olive E. Marr of our county. Rev. J.F. Irwin of your city signed the necessary papers, then we filed out to a long table full of good things to eat - cakes nearly as large as a half bushel - and it was fun to watch our little friend, Rev. Irwin, get on the "outside" of those big slabs of cake. And down along the line toward our end of the table, there was an abundance of "filling" also, and it beat kaffir corn and cane all out. Goodness gracious! Mr. Editor, we have only three young ladies left in our neighborhood who are not mortgaged. The write of this likes one of them "all right" but guess "she don't like me; I don't know." But I do know that Mr. Small loves Olive and will take care of the little woman. She is one of the girls who cares nothing for "paint and pride," and can ride a pony forty miles over our prairies and bet a hair pin against a nickel's worth of candy she can beat anyone running a foot race, or reign [sic] a pony in a herd of cattle and cut out ten head as quick as anyone can. Elisha W. Stout and Nona Hulick were joined in marriage at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Hanson in this city Tuesday evening, August 5, 1902. Rev. J. J. Griffin, pastor of the Baptist church, solemnized the marriage. The ceremony was witnessed by only a few of the immediate relatives. The groom is the second son of Dr. and Mrs. I. W. Stout and a man of sterling worth and lofty character. he has grown from boyhood to manhood here and his friends take pleasure in congratulating him. The bride is formerly from Dorchester, Nebraska, where her parents now reside, but she has lived in this county during the three past years. Until about a year ago she lived with friends at Lake City, when she came to Medicine Lodge. She has many friends here and elsewhere who wish her a happy life. Married: Owen J. Wall was married Sunday, August 18. His bride is Miss Nellie Baker, daughter of a prominent stockman of Comanche county. The groom is a nephew of A.D. and G.W. Shaw and a brother to J.W. Wall of this county. He is at present foreman on A.D. Shaw's ranch in Comanche county, a steady worker and an energetic, industrious young man. John Wells and Bonnie Adams were married in the city of Pratt Thursday, November 12, 1903. Married: On Tuesday, January 10, 1899, Probate Judge Lacy pronounced the words that made Mr. Abraham Wiebe and Miss Olga Miller husband and wife. They are German people and reside at Alva, Oklahoma. Mr. Ray Drysdale Wilson and Miss Ola McDaniel were united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents in Nippawalla township by Rev. W. H. Cross, on Wednesday, November 27th. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Wilson of Medicine Lodge township. He is one of Barber county's energetic, capable famrers and enjoys the entire confidence of all who have the pleasure of his acquaintance. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. McDaniel of Nippawalla township. She is a charming young lady and is well known and highly esteemed by the people of the community. Woodward and Mrs. Stella Null, at the residence of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.T. Woodward. The parties have both been brought up in this immediate vicinity.
