The Barber County Index, March 14, 1963. Obituary: Clifford Raymond Hoagland
Clifford Raymond Hoagland, the fourth child of Frank and Hattie (Owens) Hoagland, was born December 20, 1893 at Sun City, Kansas and died March 3, 1963.
The son of a pioneer Barber County family, he spent his boyhood and young manhood with his family on the farm near Sun City. There were two older sisters: Edith (Mrs. Waldo Leffler), now deceased, and Nina. An older brother, Charles died in infancy. It was here in the Medicine River Valley that he received his schooling and here he listened to the sermons that his grandfather, Rev. C.W. Owens, delivered from the pulpit of the Baptist Church.
On Dec. 14, 1914, when Mr. Hoagland was in his 21st year, he married Bernice Laura Lott. To them were born two children, Deloris Lee and Raymond Harold, better known to his friends as Bill.
In 1924 with his family he moved to a farm south of Lake City, later moving to the ranch where he made his home for 38 years. He was interested and took part in community activities and was for many years a member of the school board of the old Monument school which his children attended. When he began to feel the effects of ill health, he moved to the residence in Sun City. He had always been a generous contributor to the church.
All of his life he had engaged in farming and stock raising and had come to be known and highly regarded as a stockman and businessman of outstanding ability.
Tragedy struck his home a little over a year ago when his wife, Bernice, was killed in an automobile accident.
Surviving Mr. Hoagland are two children: Deloris (Mrs. Monroe Carriker) of Hardtner and Bill of Kansas City; a sister, Nina, of Sun City, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous other friends and relatives.

Funeral services for Bernice Laura Hoagland, 65, of Sun City, were held Tuesday in the Sun City Baptist church. She died at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital from injuries received in an accident Saturday morning.
The Rev. Harry Hays of Halstead and the Rev. Pearl Soules officiated at the services.
The accident occurred at 10:35 Saturday morning three miles west of Medicine Lodge on the Lake City road when the car driven by Mrs. Hoagland collided with a car driven by Ronald K. Parks of Liberal. The two cars collided almost head-on. Mrs. Hoagland was enroute to the hospital to visit her husband, Clifford, a patient there. Neal Fussell and Carl Troyer were passengers in the Parks car. Parks and Fussell received facial lacerations and were treated at Medicine Lodge hospital.
Parks has been charged in county court with driving left of center of road and negligent homicide.
Mrs. Hoagland was born April 15, 1896 at Sun City. Survivors include her husband, one son, Bill of Sun City; one daughter, Mrs. Delores Carriker of Hardtner; two brothers, Terry Lott of Wheeler, Tex., and Van Lott of Liberal; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

December 14, 1914 was a special day in the lives of Mr. Cliff Hoagland and Miss Bernice Lott. For it was on this day that 20 year old Cliff and 18 year old Bernice were united in marriage. The Reverend A.G. Mullin, Pentecostal minister, solemnized their vows in Sun City, Kansas. The relatives of the happy couple also witnessed this event.
Cliff and Bernice were both natives of Barber County, Kansas, being born and raised in Sun City, Kansas. Clifford Ray was born December 20, 1893 to Hattie Lee (Owens) and Frank Walker Hoagland. He was the 4th child and only surviving son of Frank and Hattie. The oldest son, Charles, died in infancy. His two older sisters were Edith Francis and Nina Pansie.
Laura Bernice Lott was born April 15, 1896 to Ella Bird (Van Horn) Lott and George Washington Lott. Bernice was also the youngest child. She had three older siblings; Lillie Blanche, Charles Van and Tiry Clifton.
Although neither graduated from high school, Bernice and Cliff did attend the schools in and around Sun City. Bernice attended the Rock School House north of her parent’s ranch on Turkey Creek. It is known that Cliff attended to at least the 8th grade and Bernice to the 7th. This is documented in a school scrapbook belonging to their grandson, Ronald Lee Hoagland.
Bernice attended the Baptist church in Sun City both before and after she was married to Cliff. When Cliff was younger he would listen to the sermons of his grandfather, Rev. Charles Wesley Owens, when he was minister of the Baptist church in Sun City and later when he was minister of the Church in Belvidere.
When Cliff was a young man he had a team of sorrels and a buggy. It was said he would race them across the prairie, scaring the daylights out of whomever happened to be the unfortunate passenger. Once, Cliff even roped his sister, Nina, off of a horse that she happened to be riding at the time!
Cliff worked for a time at the gyp mine south of Sun City. He would haul the gyp rocks with a team of horses from the mine. Cliff’s first love was farming and ranching. He was born and raised on his father’s farm and it was there he learned the skills necessary for a farmer and rancher.
Two children were born to this couple. The eldest was Deloris Lee born February 16, 1917 and Raymond Harold "Bill" born September 24, 1921. It seems as though Deloris had the same disposition as her father had when he was a youngster, for she once buried Bill in a posthole.
In 1924, the family moved to a ranch south of Lake City where they made their home. Clifford was a member of the school board of the old Monument school, near his ranch, which his children, Bill and Deloris, attended. His children also attended the schools at Sun City and Lake City.
Cliff and Bernice removed to Sun City when Cliff’s health began to deteriorate. The little house on Main Street served as their home for the remainder of their lives. Bernice had inherited this home from her mother, Mrs. Lott, after she passed on.
In 19__ Cliff and Bernice ventured to California with their daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Monroe Carriker. During this trip they visited Mr. Hoagland’s uncle, Arthur E. Hoagland, in Bakersfield, California.
Bernice worked right along side her husband on their ranch. She was not one to shy away from something that had to be accomplished. This probably accounted for her lean and firm figure. She did not have a desire for beef, but instead ate chicken and fish. This together with her love for green peppers probably helped keep her body trim. Their grandson, Ronnie Hoagland, who spent a great deal of time with his grandparents, remembers his grandmother in this fashion.
On February 24, 1962, Bernice was on her way to visit her husband at the Medicine Lodge Hospital, where he was a patient, when she was in an automobile accident. It was on this Saturday morning, 3 miles west of Medicine Lodge, on the Lake City road that Bernice lost her life. She was hit head on by another car. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church in Sun City and she was buried in the Sunnyside cemetery there.
Cliff did not live but for a year after the death of his wife. The illness took its toll on Cliff and he died at the Medicine Lodge Hospital on March 3, 1963. He was buried by his wife.
The legacy of Cliff and Bernice still lives on. His grandson, Ronnie Hoagland, still operates the ranch south of Lake City. The family name has continued to survive also. This is evident in his son "Bill" Hoagland, his grandsons, Ronald Hoagland, Richard Hoagland, and Clifford Hoagland, and his great-grandson, Jeff Hoagland.
