<a name="hoffer">Dr. John G. Hoffer</a>, Jr.

March 17, 1913 - May 20, 2008

Dr. John G. Hoffer, Jr., born on March 17, 1913, died on May 20, 2008 at Tidewell Hospice located in Bradenton, Florida. He embraced life as a great adventure filled with wonders that demanded an enthusiastic response. His early childhood was spent in Chicago, Illinois. Then, as a teenager, he moved with his family to Wichita, Kansas. He graduated in 1937 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and in 1944 with a Doctorate of Medicine, both from the University of Kansas. In September 1944, during World War II, Dr. Hoffer enlisted in the Army where he served as a nuero-psychologist and general surgeon until he was honorably discharged in November 1946 at the rank of Captain. 

During medical school and his three years of residency in general surgery he supplemented his financial needs as a professional photographer. He married Turelda Kliewer from Pawnee Rock, Kansas. His new bride, the head nurse of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the KU Medical School, provided critical assistance throughout his career starting with key financial support during those lean years of medical school and residency. Thus began the long partnership Dr. Hoffer shared with his adoring bride. It was truly an uncommon partnership. Later, as the couple began raising a family, Mrs. Hoffer assisted him as his surgical nurse and "anesthesiologist" during numerous surgical procedures. Their wonderful story culminated in the celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary on August 20, 2007. Turelda Hoffer passed away a month later at 92 years of age on September 29, 2007 with Dr. Hoffer still at her side.

Dr. Hoffer moved his young family to Medicine Lodge, Kansas in the Fall of 1951. There he found the perfect community to practice his second lifelong love 
as a physician and healer. The small but vibrant rural community was grateful to have found a skilled surgeon, and Dr. Hoffer relished the rare opportunity to develop a robust general medical practice in addition to his surgical practice. Medicine Lodge provided the ideal environment for the couple to raise their two children and for Mrs. Hoffer to pursue her social and philanthropic interests.

During his more than 35 years of practice at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, Dr. Hoffer never lost a patient in surgery. In his general medical practice he applied his professional belief that medical treatment ideally must be informed by an intimate knowledge of each patient as an individual who is also influenced by family and community. Further, he never failed to invest the extra time to inform and educate his patients in the simple, honest and complete terms he felt were necessary to prepare them to participate in the healing process.

Dr. Hoffer's practice spanned successive generations and included nearly all areas of medicine. He delivered new life, treated runny noses, repaired trauma victims, performed countless surgical procedures and sat though the night at the bedside of the elderly as they departed life. Upon occasion, he was the sole physician in Medicine Lodge and found it necessary to provide 24-hour a day coverage to a broad geographic area. Even during these physically exhausting times he continued to perform evening house calls, often accepting payment from the less economically advantaged in the form of produce from their small farms. From time to time he earned peanuts'literally. Dr. Hoffer was honored in 1976 for his many years of outstanding service to Medicine Lodge at an awards ceremony in which he was overwhelmed by the turnout and outpouring of appreciation and affection from the community. 

In 1987 at 74 years of age, Dr. and Mrs. Hoffer moved to the senior living community of Foxwood Springs in Raymore, Missouri where they spent the next eight years. The Hoffers loved the opportunities afforded them while at Foxwood Springs with its wonderful mix of residents and proximity to Kansas City and Lawrence, Kansas. They forged great friendships and built fond memories, and Dr. Hoffer actively participated on committees and in planning entertainment. In their final years Dr. and Mrs. Hoffer lived with their daughter, Virginia Weber, and her husband, Ronald Weber, where they were able to continue activities with support from Virginia, a registered nurse. Shortly before his death, Dr. Hoffer made a generous donation of $100,000 to the University of Kansas Endowment Fund for the benefit of the lecture series in honor of his good friend and fellow KU alum, Dr. Stanley Friesen.

Dr. Hoffer checked into Tidewell Hospice on May 15, 2008, just days before his passing, still asking medical staff probative questions and actively participating in what he knew would be his last medical instructions. Dr. Hoffer remained a physician until but one patient remained. After giving his final orders, he surrendered control to a higher power and easily and gracefully passed smoothly on to the next great adventure, undoubtedly with renewed enthusiasm. 

Dr. Hoffer is survived by his daughter, Virginia Jane Weber, his son, John G. Hoffer, III and their children.

Publisher's note: Dr. John Hoffer passed away on May 20th at Tidewell Hospice near his home in Florida. He was 95 years old. Hoffer's wife, Turelda, passed away last December. They had just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Dr. Hoffer began his practice in Medicine Lodge in the fall of 1951 and retired in the mid-1980s. He touched thousands of lives during his practice here.

<a name="confer">Lorene Confer</a> , a resident of Holiday Island, AR, was born July 10, 1924 in Sedan, Kansas, a daughter of Delmar Lee "Cap" and Nellie (Johnson) Fowler. She departed this life Wednesday, December 12, 2007 in Springdale, AR, at the age of 83.<P>

Mrs. Confer attended school in <a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>, graduating from Medicine Lodge High School in 1942. She was the head bookkeeper for Midas Muffler and Ginger's Ladies Wear, both located in Wichita, Kansas, for many years, and also enjoyed reading and gardening.<P>

On October 23, 1948, Lorene was united in marriage with Paul Confer. He survives. She is also survived by one sister, Nadine and husband Herman Westmeyer of Chanute, KS, two daughters-in-law, Arline Confer of Holiday Island and Adrease Confer of Wichita, KS, four grandchildren; David Confer and wife Debbie of Flower Mound, TX, Michael Confer and wife Teresa of Overland Park, KS, Cindy and husband Michael Coldiron of Wichita, KS, and Diane and husband Larry Dixon of Anderson, SC; nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends.<P>

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Louis Fowler and Delmar Fowler, Jr., and two step-sons; Bill Confer and David Confer.<P>

Memorial service was at Holiday Island Community Church on January 5. Condolences may be sent to Lorene's husband at his current home: Paul Confer, Wichita, Kansas.<P>

<a name="pierce">Evelyn R. Pierce</a>, age 74, died Thursday, December 20, 2007 at her residence in Liberal, Kansas. She was born March 18, 1933 at 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>, the daughter of Robert Clarke and Marjorie (Rossel) Simpson.<P>

She was a 1952 graduate of Kinsley High School.<P>

In 1951, she married Albert Claude Pierce at Medicine Lodge. He died November 8, 1990. She had formerly worked as the seamstress for many years for the menswear store in downtown Liberal. In earlier years, she worked for Beech Aircraft, Liberal, in the upholstery department and at Cross Manufacturing in Greensburg. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Red Hat Society and the Prestige Club, all of Liberal. She was the Modern Woodmen Camp Secretary and Youth Leader.<P>

She is survived by one son, Robert Pierce and wife Debbie of Satanta; 2 brothers, Richard Simpson and wife Joy of Medicine Lodge, Phillip Simpson, Medicine Lodge; two sisters, Phyllis Shelite and husband Ray of Pratt, Mary Rucker and husband David of Sharon; 11 grandchildren, Misty Wilson, Crystal Shane, Sandy Dubbs and husband Daniel, Albert Claude Pierce, III, Pamela Pierce, April Hoch and husband Steve, Deloris Pierce, Preston Pierce, Josh Zimmerman and wife Margarita, Michael Pierce and Shane Sandlian; and 14 great grandchildren.<P>

She was preceded in death by her parents, and 1 son - Albert Claude Pierce, Jr. and several infant grandchildren.
Funeral service was held on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at the First Christian Church, Liberal, with the Rev. Dr. Jack Russell presiding. Graveside service was at Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge.<P>

<a name="woodbury">Virgil Lee Woodbury</a> died Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita. <P>

Mr. Woodbury was born June 27, 1929 at Avard, OK the son of the late Silas and Ella Jane (Milledge) Woodbury. A resident of 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a> for 53 years coming from Oklahoma, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 5 years, was a Warehouse Superindent for Gold Bond Building Products for 37 years, and hauled hay for many farmers. After retiring he did yard work for many people. He was a US Army Veteran serving from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 9, 1950 he married Laura Back at Fairview, Ok, she survives. <P>

Other survivors include a son Harlon Woodbury and wife Silver, Oklahoma City; a daughter Shirley Woodbury, Pratt; and two grandchildren, Lauren Renee Woodbury and Scott Alan Woodbury. He was preceded in death by a brother Lee Roy Woodbury and a half-brother Charlie Milledge. <P>

Graveside Service was Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at Isabel Cemetery, Isabel with Pastor Jay Squires officiating.

GHP December 24, 2007&nbsp; <a name="kotapish">Claire McBride Kotapish</a>, 87, passed away peacefully on November 15th at the Kansas Masonic Home. Claire previously lived in Waterville and 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>, Kansas. <P>

She graduated from Waterville High School in 1937. She moved to Medicine Lodge in 1950 after marrying Clarence Voss and was employed as a legal secretary for Ralph Hall. She and Clarence moved to Wichita in 1967 and she was employed by Martin and Churchill law firm. <P>

She is survived by her children, Billie Lott of Seattle, WA, Phil Voss of Wichita and Jeannie Pike of Overland Park; stepchildren Gary and Jackie Barnes, Troy and Maxine Barnes, all of Wichita and stepdaughters Kay Iles and Amy and Charlie Harvey all of Overland Park; 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Claire chose to have her remains donated to the KU Medical Center for research. She will be buried in the Waterville cemetery at a later date. <P>

GHP December 24, 2007&nbsp; <a name="kumberg">Neva Francis Kumberg</a>, age 83, died Friday, December 14, 2007 at South Wind Hospice Home in Pratt, Kansas. She was born February 13, 1924, the daughter of the late Ace and Hazel Riffey of Sawyer, Kansas.<P>

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Pratt, the Red Hat Society and Walk Across Kansas. Neva worked many years as an LPN at Pratt Regional Medical Center. She was an avid walker in Pratt and well known for her fondness of glittery hats.<P>

She is survived by a daughter: Sandra & husband Don Mease of 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>, KS, three grandchildren: Amy & husband R.D. Cogswell of Topeka, Emily Mease of Topeka and Chad & wife Kara Mease of Liberal, four great-grandchildren: Connor, Caitlyn, Cameron & Claire Cogswell.<P>

There will be no visitation. Memorial service was Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt with R.D. Cogswell presiding.<P>

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Louis Albert Hinz, her parents, Emerson Reed and Rosa (Rebuck) Roush, her brothers Floyd and Bud, sisters Melba and Roxie.<P>

Lola was a member of PEO for over 50 years and Longmont United Methodist Church for over 40 years. <P>


Lola grew up at Fairview where she attended school, later graduating from high school in 1932. Lola and Louis left Horton, Kansas in 1950 and moved to Atwood, Kansas, where Louis worked for the REA, building electric lines in the rural areas of NW Kansas. A year later, the family moved to Bird City, Kansas, where Louis continued to work for the REA. In 1952, Louis became City Superintendent and Lola operated the Double L Cafe. In 1958, the family moved to St. Francis, Kansas, where Louis was Electrical Superintendent for the city and Lola worked for the newspaper. In 1962, they moved to Longmont, CO, where Lola began working as Secretary for Columbine Elementary School, and later worked in the School Superintendent's office before retiring. She loved to read, work cross word puzzles, and was a great cook and seamstress. <P>


Funeral service is on Monday, December 10, 2007 at Powhattan United Methodist Church with Reverend Priscilla Davies officiating. Interment will follow at Powhattan Cemetery. Arrangements by Larrison Mortuary of Medicine Lodge and Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha. <a name="withers">Jane Withers</a>, age 63, of Pratt died Friday, November 16, 2007 at Pratt Regional Medical Center, Pratt.<P>


She was born November 21, 1943 at Hardtner, KS the daughter of Clifford E. and Mildred (Martin) Schrimp. She married Danny Withers on May 7, 1960 at Hutchinson, KS.<P>


A former long term President of Republican Women, she also helped with Special Olympics in the Kiwanis Club and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Pratt.<P>


She is survived by her husband: Danny, two daughters: Dianna Flanders of Amarillo, TX, Dana Tyler of Conway, AR, five sisters: Evelyn Craig of San Antonio, TX, Nellie Williams of Pretty Prairie, KS, Fay Broyles of Ft. Worth, TX, Ellen Agronis of Tulsa, OK, Kathy Lee of Wellington, KS, one brother: Frank Schrimp of Hutchinson, KS, 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.<P>


She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clifford Schrimp.<P>


The funeral was Tuesday, November 20th at 2:00 pm at Larrison Mortuary, Pratt with Pastor Jan Blasi presiding.<P>

GHP, November 26, 2007&nbsp; <a name="baker">Wilda Lee (Glover) Baker</a> went to be with the Lord November 1, 2007 after a long battle with leukemia. She was born October 15, 1929 in Northbranch, Kansas to Edgar and Verda (Dillon) Glover.<P>


Wilda attended 2 yrs. of college in Haviland, Kansas while corresponding with Orlan who was stationed in France. When he returned they were married on June 21, 1953. They lived in Burr Oak, Kansas where Wilda was a switchboard operator. Orlan then took a job in 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a> where Wilda worked in the meat department in Parkers IGA, the local newpaper office and later was an assistant in the District Court office before retiring in 1992. She and Orlan were always involved in camping clubs in Medicine Lodge and Pratt. They began spending summers on Grand Lake in Ok. and then winters in Tx, where they decided to stay full time. In 2006 they sold their RV and home in Medicine Lodge and bought a mobile home in Paradise Park in Pharr, Tx.<P>


Wilda is preceded in death by her mother Verda, father Edgar and a niece Wanda Kay Glover.<P>


Wilda is survived by her husband Orlan, a son Jay and his wife Kezia of Collinsville, Ok, their 3 sons Brandon of Norfolk, Va, Stephon of Denver, Co, and Nathaniel and wife Jenny of Norfolk, Va.. Their daughter Doris (Baker) Roland and husband Larry of Rogers, Ar, their two sons Gale and wife Kara of Rogers, Ar and Jeremy and wife Cheri of Caledonia, Mi., two great-granddaughters Kadey and Alexys Roland, a sister Estalene Ferguson of Hutchinson, Ks., a brother LaVae Glover of Northbranch, Ks along with many nieces and nephews that loved her and will miss her.<P>


A memorial service will be held at Paradise Park November 24, 2007 and a family memorial will be held at a later date in Northbranch, Ks.<P>

He was born June 19, 1943 at <a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>, Kansas, the son of Clair Chester and Helen Lucille (Covey) Arnold. He was a lifetime resident of Medicine Lodge. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge.<P>


He is survived by two brothers David Arnold, Oklahoma City, OK and Richard Arnold, Elkhorn, Nebraska<P>


Graveside service was held on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Highland Cemetery with Pastor Tom Walters officiating. <P>

GHP, November 26, 2007&nbsp; <a name="humphrey">Patsy Ann (Hyter) Humphrey</a>, 85, passed away in Wichita on Friday, November 16, 2007. Pat was born on September 29, 1922 at Hutchinson to Samuel D. Hyter and Mina Amelia (Everley) Hyter. Her family moved to Kiowa when she was young and her father had purchased the movie theater. She graduated from Kiowa High School and attended one semester of college at Hutchinson. <P>

On October 1, 1941 she and James "Bud" Paul Humphrey were united in marriage. She attended the Congregational United Church of Christ in Kiowa for a number of years and later became a member of the United Methodist Church. She volunteered at the church, Kiowa Historical Society, General Store, and helped with Cub Scouts. She was the Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. When she wasn't working as a volunteer she would clean house and take on the role of doctor and nurse for her boys. One of her hobbies was to refinish furniture. She enjoyed attending all sporting events for her children and grandchildren.<P>

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, Bob Hyter.<P>

She is survived by her four sons, Jim and wife, Sue of 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>, Sam and wife, Vicki of Kiowa, Kem and wife, Dot of Kiowa, Tad of Winfield; ten grandchildren, Tammi and husband, Chad Ohl, Joel Humphrey, Rachel and husband, Travis Pape, Emily Humphrey, Angela and husband, Erick Devoy, Kale Humphrey, Liz Humphrey, Ann and husband, Berton Walz, Trent and wife, Abby Humphrey, Taylor Humphrey; two great grandchildren, Hadley Ohl, Jonas Humphrey, and many friends.<P>


Funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at the United Methodist Church in Kiowa with Pastor Wayne Stephens officiating. Burial followed at Riverview Cemetery. <a name="jackson">Ronald Dee Jackson</a>, age 72, died Friday, November 16, 2007 at his home in 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>. He was born February 27, 1935 at Anderson, Indiana, the son of Claud and Marcella (Davis) Jackson. <P>


Coming from Zenda, he has been a resident of Medicine Lodge since 1977. He was a custodian at the Medicine Lodge Middle School for 22 years. He was a US Army Veteran having served from 1958-1960.<P>


On December 1, 1956, he married Shirley Ann Alvis in Anderson, Indiana. She died February 28, 1990.<P>


He is survived by his son Mark and Rebecca Jackson, Medicine Lodge; and daughter Mardena Jackson, Wichita; a sister GayAnne Simms, Tennessee; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.<P>


He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marlene Adiar.<P>


The funeral service will be held November 20, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge with Pastor Tom Walters officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.<P>


Memorials may be made to the Ronald Jackson Memorial Fund in care of the Larrison Funeral Home in Medicine Lodge.<P>

GHP, November 12, 2007&nbsp; <a name="wiscaver">Marie Wiscaver</a>, 91, died November 7, 2007 at Wellsville, Kansas. She was born June 14, 1916 in Barber County, the daughter of Earl B. and Stella (Shanks) Vaughn. <P>

She attended school in <a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a> from the first grade until the end of her 1st semester of her senior year, when her family moved to Wichita, where she attended North High School and later graduated from Bonnie Beauty Academy in Wichita. She was a hairdresser at Marie's Beauty Shop in Medicine Lodge for over 30 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, and the First Christian Church in Grove, OK.<P>

 In September, 1935, she married Everett Reeves. To this union two children were born, Randall D. Reeves and Russell B. Reeves. On June 23, 1946, she married 
 <a href="../images/kennedy_clay_1a.jpg">Clay Kennedy</a>. They made their home in Medicine Lodge until his death in 1969. In 1970 she married Edgar C. Wiscaver. They made their home in Mesa, AZ, and Grove, OK, until his death in 1982.<P>


Survivors include 6 grandsons Russell, Michael, Mark, Spencer, Randall, and Jesse, and a granddaughter Lacy Matthews.<P>


She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 husbands; two sons Randall and Russell Reeves. Two sisters Ruth Vance, and Velma Bates, and a brother Randall Vaughn.<P>


Graveside Service was held on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge with Pastor Matt Wilkerson officiating. <P>

<a name="swinehart">Carol Lynn Swinehart</a>, 61, passed away October 29, 2007 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was born April 25, 1946 at Nashville, Kansas, the daughter of the late Delbert and Georgie Mae (Ross) Wehling. <P>

She graduated from Isabel High School in 1964 and earned her cosmetology certificate in Pratt, KS. She was a member of United Methodist Church, 
<a href="../towns/medicinelodge.html">Medicine Lodge</a>, and attended Watonga Methodist Church, Watonga, OK. <P>

On June 28, 1964 she married Bobby Swinehart at Medicine Lodge. They lived in Medicine Lodge where they started a family of 3 sons, Derrick, Jared and Kory. In 1992 Bobby's job took them to Watonga, OK and later on to Yukon, OK. Carol worked as a Beautician and Homemaker while in Medicine Lodge. While living in Watonga she especially enjoyed her time as waitress at the Nobel House. One of her favorite pastimes was spending time at the Drag Races with family and friends. A love of the game of basketball and the NBA Hornets coming to Oklahoma City gave her a lot of enjoyment over the past 2 years as a season ticket holder.<P>


She is survived by her husband Bobby, Yukon, OK; 3 sons, Derrick and his wife Shanda of Greensburg, Jared, Hutchinson, Kory and his wife Sharla of Yukon, OK; grandchildren, Aubrey, Selah, Brianna, Mason and Colby; sisters, Marilynn Lee of Mesa, AZ, Delpha Vincent, Wichita; brother, Kenneth Wehling, Wichita; a niece, Tara Virzuela and husband Paul, Mesa, AZ.<P>


She was preceded in death by her parents.<P>


Funeral service was on Friday, November 2, at the United Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge with John Hamm and Pastor Frank DeFisher presiding. Burial was in Highland Cemetery. <P>

87, died Friday, August 22, 2008 at Share Convalescent Home in Alva, Oklahoma. 
She was born April 29, 1921 on the family ranch in Barber County, Kansas the 
daughter of David Adam and Jessie (McCrory) Blunk. <br><br>Allison graduated 
from Medicine Lodge High School, and attended Wichita Business College, Wichita, 
Kansas. She worked for a time at Boeing in Wichita, and later owned and operated 
Ideal Courts, Medicine Lodge. She attended and was a member of Union Chapel 
Church in the Gyp Hills of Barber County. She and husband Jim were long time 
residents of Barber County.<br><br>On July 29, 1946 she married James "Jim" B. 
Hendrix in Anthony, Kansas, and were married untill his passing on Feb. 15, 
1999. The couple had two children; a son John "Corky" Hendrix and wife Marsha, 
Alva, OK; and a daughter Sherry Stucky and husband Ron, Azle, TX; four 
grandchildren, a step grandchild, and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in 
death by her parents, and a brother.<br><br>Funeral Service was held on Monday

25, 2008<br><br><a name="depenbusch">Mary A. Depenbusch</a>, 102, was born June 
30, 1906 at Maydale, Kansas, one of fifteen children born to Michael and Mary 
(Bolz) Traffas. <br><br>On August 25, 1925 she was united in marriage with 
Theodore H. Depenbusch at St. Boniface Church in Sharon. To this union six 
children were born. They made their home on a farm south of Zenda, Kansas. Mary 
was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Anthony, and of the St. Joan 
of Arc Parish Community, the Altar Society, a charter member of D. of I. She was 
President of the Zenda EHU. She was chairman of the Zenda Blood Mobile for 13 
years. After Ted and Mary retired in 1962, they moved to Anthony. <br><br>On 
Saturday evening, August 16, 2008, she passed away at the Anthony Medical Center 
Home Comfort at the age of 102. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted on 
March 12, 1967; her parents, Michael and Mary Traffas; son and daughter-in-law, 
Fred F. and Evelyn Depenbusch; daughter and son-in-law, Helen L. and Edward 
Giegerich; son-in-law, Ed "Flash" Troyer; grandson, Chris Depenbusch; eight

died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 28th, in his home.<br><br>Born on January 30,

the president of Hellman Construction and an employee of H &amp; B Lumber. He also 
served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.<br><br>Left to cherish his

co-owner of Paradise Gardens and Greenhouse in Medicine Lodge. She was a member 
of First Christian Church, VFW Auxiliary, and was on a Bowling League, all in 
Medicine Lodge.<br><br>On Feb. 16, 1946 she married Philip Duaine Hayes at New 
Orleans, LA. He died Feb. 16, 1997. <br><br>She is survived by a daughter Sharon

November 10, 1937, at Los Angeles, California the daughter of Noble and Lillian 
(Able) Tobin. A resident of Medicine Lodge since 1968 coming from Los Angeles 
she was a secretery for the Barber County Treasurers Office. <br>On August 12, 
1961 she married Lynn Kimball at Los Angeles, CA., he survives. She was a member 
of the First Christan Church where she was the church secretary. She also 
attended Pratt Community College for two years and received an Associates Degree 
in Business.<br>Survivors include a son Ron Kimball of Medicine Lodge, and three 
daughters Connie Mott of Great Bend, Cathy Enfield of McPherson, and Cindy Mong 
of Spearville; and one stepdaughter Christa Newburg of Tacoma, WA.; 15

<br>GHP March 3, 2008<br><br>John Mason Hartzell was born in Hardtner, Kansas, 
January 23, 1945 to Freda and Kenneth Hartzell. John spent his first 18 years 
growing up in Medicine Lodge, joining the Presbyterian Church April 1957, and 
graduating high school in May of 1963. After graduating from Pratt Junior 
College in May of 1965, John attended a nursing school for a year in Winfield, 
Kansas, beginning his love of that city. <br>He enlisted into the United States 
Air Force in 1966 as a security policeman and received an honorable discharge in 
1970. His service to his country included 3 years in Germany and the remainder 
in Massachusetts. John then worked as a private security guard at the Kissing 
Camel Estates near Colorado Springs, Colorado for 6 months. Returning to 
Winfield, Kansas, John attended and graduated from Southwestern College in May 
1973 with a Bachelors degree in Sociology. After moving to Chanute, Kansas, John 
completed management training in the Quick Trip Store program and was as 
assistant manager for a short time but returned to Winfield, Kansas, where he 
was employed by Automatic Coin for the next 30 years and transferred his 
membership of the Presbyterian Church to Winfield, Kansas in May 1976.<br>John 
Mason Hartzell passed away February 8, 2008, and his memorial service was held 
Saturday, February 23, at the Presbyterian Church, Medicine Lodge. Surviving 
John are two sisters, Marie Hopkins of Newton, Kansas, and Evelyn Johnson of 
Mulvane, Kansas, nephew Greg Hopkins of El Dorado, Kansas, niece Sheryl and Adam 
Ericson of Nashville, Tennessee, John and Diane Bartholomew of Lamoni, Iowa, 
Janine and Vash Narula of Carrolton, Texas, two great nephews, two great nieces, 
and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.<br>John is preceded in death by his

GHP February 25, 2008<br><br><a name="harbaugh">Pete "Pat" H. Harbaugh</a>, 86, 
died Monday, February 18, 2008 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital in Medicine 
Lodge, Kansas. He was born March 17, 1921 in rural Medicine Lodge, Kansas the 
son of John and Mayme (Wilson) Harbaugh. A lifetime resident of Medicine Lodge, 
he was a farmer and a rancher. He graduated from Medicine Lodge High School in 
1938.<br>He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Pratt, a lifetime member of the 
American Trapshooting Association, was Trustee for Nippawalla Township for 50 
years, and won many soil conservation awards.<br>On Aug. 8, 1943 he married 
Vivian Holder in her parents’ rural home at Norwich, KS. She survives.<br>Other 
survivors include a daughter Cheri Lee Keefer and her husband Robert Charles of 
Honolulu, HI; two sisters Pauline McClary, Los Angeles, CA; and Louise 
Kirkbride, Arlington, VA: a half sister Linda Stark, Wichita; two half brothers 
Benny Harbaugh, Newcastle, OK; and Johnny Harbaugh, Show Low, AZ; and many 
nieces and nephews.<br>Memorial Service was Saturday, February 23, 2008 at

25, 2008<br><br><a name="carter">Ester May Carter</a>, 87, of Livingston, 
Montana, died at her home Saturday morning, February 9, 2008. Cremation has 
taken place at Franzen-Davis Crematory. A celebration of her life was held at 
12:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter 
Day Saints, Main and Summit, in Livingston with Pastor Pete Hofer officiating. 
Funeral is Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at the Baptist Church, Sun City, KS, 
with Rev. Jeff Woods presiding. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Sun City, 
Kansas.<br>Ester was born May 30, 1920 to Stanley and Myrtle (Whitaker) Garten 
in Sun City, Kansas. On July 19, 1941, she married Clarence "Hoss" Leroy Carter 
in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.<br>They made their home in Kansas, Colorado, and 
after retirement in Montana.<br>Ester worked many years driving a school bus in 
Colorado and working as a bakery chef for many restaurants and school districts.<br>
When they retired, Ester and Hoss enjoyed traveling to many places in their RV 
and meeting many fine people from all walks of life. They never knew a stranger 
and loved visiting and keeping in touch with the people they met throughout 
their life. Ester was a member of the Heritage Baptist Church in Livingston.<br>
After settling in Montana to be closer to family, Ester did volunteer work and 
was a caregiver for the elderly up until the time of her death. One of her 
greatest joys was her family. Her great-grandchildren loved sitting on her lap 
and being close to her. In the early years, one of her favorite pastimes was 
riding her horse with Hoss checking cows in Kansas and exploring the mountains 
of Colorado.<br>Ester’s survivors include two sons, Terry Carter (Lori) of 
Livingston, Ron Carter (Jo) of Vaughn, MT and a sister Helen Obenchain of 
Denver, CO. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Samantha Booth (Mark) and 
family of Livingston, Tressa Blair (Aaron) and family of White Sulphur Springs, 
MT, Jessica Tyner (Jake) and sons of Emigrant, MT, Cadee Gordon and sons of Fort 
Shaw, MT, and Lee Carter (Lauren) and son of Power, MT. Her 10 very special 
great-grandchildren also survive her. Her parents, husband, one infant son, five 
brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. <br>Franzen-Davis Crematory was

Sunday, February 10, 2008 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital in Medicine Lodge, 
Kansas. She was born November 26, 1929 in Nippawha Township, Rural Barber 
County, Kansas, the daughter of A.N. and Marguerite (Green) Harbaugh. She lived 
in the same house she was born in her whole life except when she attended 
college and the last 9 days of her life, when she was hospitalized. She attended 
country school, and rode horses for transportation. Joanne learned to drive in a 
1947 1 ¼ ton truck, which the family still has today. After graduating high 
school she attended Emporia State University. Her mother would drive a car to 
Wichita, and she would ride the train to Emporia. She graduated with a degree in 
Elementary Education. There she met her husband of 41 years. On June 8, 1950 she 
married Melvin W. Prothe at Emporia, KS. After marrying Melvin she converted to 
the Lutheran Faith and was confirmed on Aug. 6, 1950 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 
Emporia.<br>A resident of Medicine Lodge, for most of her life, she was a 
farmer/rancher in Medicine Lodge since 1954 along side her husband until his 
death on July 19, 1991. <br>Survivors include a son Craig Prothe and wife Sherry 
of Medicine Lodge, KS; a daughter Ann Keller and husband Larry of Kremlin, OK; a 
sister Mildred Magnison of Medicine Lodge, KS; four Grandchildren, Heather 
McDougal, Ashley Prothe, Tara Cecil, and Luke Keller; and 3 great grandchildren 
Quinn McDougal, Ashton Cecil and Claire McDougal.<br>She taught her children and 
grandchildren to be ladies and gentlemen, and all to be safe.<br>She was 
preceded in death by her parents, her husband and an infant brother.<br>Funeral

at Hilltop Manor, she was owner/operator and Tailor of Joy's Dress Shop, and was 
a bookkeeper for Dr. Strack and Dr. Hillard. She worked at Boeing Aircraft 
during WWII. She was a member of First Christian Church, Medicine Lodge. On Dec. 
25, 1938 she married Wayne A. Ford, he died Jan. 16, 2003.<br>She is survived by 
a son Johnny Ford of Springhill, KS, and a daughter Pamela Jill Goldsmith of 
Abilene, KS. a brother, Phillip Smith, Claremore, OK, two sisters JoAnne Gibson, 
Houston, TX; Cynda Thomas, Lancaster, CA: 4 Grandchildren, and 10 Great

<a name="gregg">Leona Gayle Gregg</a>, 90, became suddenly ill at her home in 
Medicine Lodge, KS and passed away at 9:20 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008 in the 
Medicine Lodge Hospital Emergency Room, Medicine Lodge, KS.<br><br>She was born 
on September 26, 1917 in Columbia City, IN the daughter of Lyman Esta and Olive 
Mae (Dohms) Hawn. Mrs. Gregg was reared in Columbia and Richland Townships, 
Whitley County, IN. She graduated from Larwill High School with the Class of 
1935. She married James Richard Gregg on April 1, 1939 in the church parsonage. 
She and her family moved into Columbia City, they spent about five years in the 
Fort Wayne area, two years in Minnesota near her parents and then returned back 
to Columbia City where they lived until they moved to Scottsdale, AZ in 1974. 
Mrs. Gregg worked as a newspaper keyboard operator and teletype operator working 
for the Columbia City Post and Mail Newspaper from 1954-1974. While in Arizona, 
she also worked for the Visiting Nurse Service of Phoenix, AZ. In June 2001, she 
and her late husband moved to Medicine Lodge, Kansas. She was a member of the 
Scottsdale Baptist Church and Gideon Auxiliary Camp Number 90. In Medicine 
Lodge, she attended Community Bible Fellowship and was active in Moms in Touch 
and the Ladies’ Prayer Group.<br><br>She is survived by 3 daughters, Beverly 
(Thomas) Foulkrod, Medicine Lodge, KS, Laramie Niccum, Elkhart, IN and Peggy 
(Larry) Montgomery, Lakewood, OH; 12 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 
20 great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 
James Richard Gregg who passed away on June 9, 2003, grandson, Donovan Miller

Robert Poland</a>, age 80, passed from this life into the next Saturday, January 
26 at his home in Isabel. He was born April 12, 1927, the son of P. L. and 
Bessie (Hamm) Poland. He married Mary June Sleeper sixty-one years ago. Don was 
a farmer, friend, and neighbor in Pratt and Barber Counties. He was a member of 
the Isabel Church of Christ serving as a teacher, a deacon and an elder. He 
served on the school board at Isabel, the Isabel Co-Op Board and the Federal 
Land Bank Board. He was honored in Barber County as a Soil Conservation Award 
winner in 1991.<br>His children are Dianne (Bill) Buggein, Augusta; Rita 
(Howard) Kendall, San Antonio, TX; Richard (Anita) Poland, Isabel; Greg (Janet) 
Poland, Edmond, OK; Brian (Tammy) Poland, Isabel; Kendall (Rhonda) Poland, 
Carmen, OK. These children blessed the family with 18 grandchildren and 16 great

from Laird, Colo. most recently living in Sharon, she was a homemaker and a 
sales representative for Avon.<br>She belonged to the Community Bible Fellowship 
Church, Medicine Lodge, taught Sunday school and Bible School at Sun City 
Baptist Church, Sun City and First Baptist Church, was a 4-H leader and was in a 
Powder Puff Bowling League.<br>On June 2, 1947, she married Charles R. Sawyer 
Sr. He survives.<br>Other survivors include: a son, Charles Jr., Sharon; two 
daughters, Janice Rhodes, Willamsburg, Joyce Smith, San Quintin, Mexico; two

Virgil A. and Mary (Dort) Walker on Friday, December 20, 1907 near Farry, 
Oklahoma.<br>On May 8, 1927, Margaret and Edgar "Eddie" L. Good were united in 
marriage at Hardtner, Kansas. Together they celebrated 37 years of marriage 
before his death on September 10, 1964. <br>She was preceded in death by her 
parents, two infant children, sister Mildred Vincent and brother Everette

Monday January 14, 2008 at Lakewood Senior Living Center in Pratt, KS. She was

(Howard) Cain. In 1934 she married Gilbert Compton in Hugoton, KS. He preceded 
her in death on June 6, 1968. <br>She lived in Lake City from 1936 until 1986 
then moved to Medicine Lodge. She lived in Medicine Lodge until 2003 when she 
moved to Pratt. She was the Postmaster in Lake City , retiring in 1985. She 
graduated Valedictorian from Liberal High School in 1932. She was a member of 
the Lake City Methodist Church. She was also a member of YWCA of Lake City, 
Golden Agers of Medicine Lodge, and EHU.<br>She is survived by one daughter: 
Mary Lake and husband Rusty of Lake City, KS., three sons: Raymon and wife Vera 
Compton of Pratt, KS, Dalton and wife Melba of Wichita, KS, and Dick and Leora

resident of Holiday Island, AR, was born July 10, 1924 in Sedan, Kansas, a 
daughter of Delmar Lee "Cap" and Nellie (Johnson) Fowler. She departed this life 
Wednesday, December 12, 2007 in Springdale, AR, at the age of 83.<br>Mrs. Confer 
attended school in Medicine Lodge, graduating from Medicine Lodge High School in 
1942. She was the head bookkeeper for Midas Muffler and Ginger’s Ladies Wear, 
both located in Wichita, Kansas, for many years, and also enjoyed reading and 
gardening.<br>On October 23, 1948, Lorene was united in marriage with Paul 
Confer. He survives. She is also survived by one sister, Nadine and husband 
Herman Westmeyer of Chanute, KS, two daughters-in-law, Arline Confer of Holiday 
Island and Adrease Confer of Wichita, KS, four grandchildren; David Confer and 
wife Debbie of Flower Mound, TX, Michael Confer and wife Teresa of Overland 
Park, KS, Cindy and husband Michael Coldiron of Wichita, KS, and Diane and 
husband Larry Dixon of Anderson, SC; nine great grandchildren, several nieces

Evelyn R. Pierce, age 74, died Thursday, December 20, 2007 at her residence in 
Liberal, Kansas. She was born March 18, 1933 at Medicine Lodge, the daughter of 
Robert Clarke and Marjorie (Rossel) Simpson.<br>She was a 1952 graduate of 
Kinsley High School.<br>In 1951, she married Albert Claude Pierce at Medicine 
Lodge. He died November 8, 1990. She had formerly worked as the seamstress for 
many years for the menswear store in downtown Liberal. In earlier years, she 
worked for Beech Aircraft, Liberal, in the upholstery department and at Cross 
Manufacturing in Greensburg. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the 
Red Hat Society and the Prestige Club, all of Liberal. She was the Modern 
Woodmen Camp Secretary and Youth Leader.<br>She is survived by one son, Robert 
Pierce and wife Debbie of Satanta; 2 brothers, Richard Simpson and wife Joy of 
Medicine Lodge, Phillip Simpson, Medicine Lodge; two sisters, Phyllis Shelite 
and husband Ray of Pratt, Mary Rucker and husband David of Sharon; 11 
grandchildren, Misty Wilson, Crystal Shane, Sandy Dubbs and husband Daniel, 
Albert Claude Pierce, III, Pamela Pierce, April Hoch and husband Steve, Deloris

Lee Woodbury died Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Kansas Heart Hospital, Wichita.
<br>Mr. Woodbury was born June 27, 1929 at Avard, OK the son of the late Silas 
and Ella Jane (Milledge) Woodbury. A resident of Medicine Lodge for 53 years 
coming from Oklahoma, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 5 years, was a 
Warehouse Superindent for Gold Bond Building Products for 37 years, and hauled 
hay for many farmers. After retiring he did yard work for many people. He was a 
US Army Veteran serving from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict. On Oct. 9, 
1950 he married Laura Back at Fairview, Ok, she survives. <br>Other survivors 
include a son Harlon Woodbury and wife Silver, Oklahoma City; a daughter Shirley 
Woodbury, Pratt; and two grandchildren, Lauren Renee Woodbury and Scott Alan 
Woodbury. He was preceded in death by a brother Lee Roy Woodbury and a

GHP December 24, 2007<br><br>Claire McBride Kotapish<br>Claire McBride Kotapish, 
87, passed away peacefully on November 15th at the Kansas Masonic Home. Claire 
previously lived in Waterville and Medicine Lodge, Kansas. She graduated from 
Waterville High School in 1937. She moved to Medicine Lodge in 1950 after 
marrying Clarence Voss and was employed as a legal secretary for Ralph Hall. She 
and Clarence moved to Wichita in 1967 and she was employed by Martin and 
Churchill law firm. She is survived by her children, Billie Lott of Seattle, WA, 
Phil Voss of Wichita and Jeannie Pike of Overland Park; stepchildren Gary and 
Jackie Barnes, Troy and Maxine Barnes, all of Wichita and stepdaughters Kay Iles 
and Amy and Charlie Harvey all of Overland Park; 10 grandchildren and 12 great 
grandchildren. Claire chose to have her remains donated to the KU Medical Center 
for research. She will be buried in the Waterville cemetery at a later date. <br>

GHP December 24, 2007<br>Neva Francis Kumberg<br>Neva Francis Kumberg, age 83, 
died Friday, December 14, 2007 at South Wind Hospice Home in Pratt, Kansas. She 
was born February 13, 1924, the daughter of the late Ace and Hazel Riffey of 
Sawyer, Kansas.<br>She was a member of the First Christian Church of Pratt, the 
Red Hat Society and Walk Across Kansas. Neva worked many years as an LPN at 
Pratt Regional Medical Center. She was an avid walker in Pratt and well known 
for her fondness of glittery hats.<br>She is survived by a daughter: Sandra &amp; 
husband Don Mease of Medicine Lodge, KS, three grandchildren: Amy &amp; husband R.D.

Kumberg, 86 died Dec. 8, 2007 at Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, Medicine 
Lodge. He was born Oct. 15, 1921 on the family farm near Sawyer, KS in rural 
Barber County, the son of Gust and Sadie (Kincaid) Kumberg.<br>A lifetime 
resident of Barber County, he was a Rancher and a Farmer in Barber County after 
his service in the US Army Air Corp during WWII. He served as an airplane repair 
crew chief in North Africa and Fogia, Italy with the 319th Depot Repair 
Squadron. Bob loved to tease and joke, worked as hard as he could, and was 
passionate about caring for his cattle along side his wife Darlene, his 
children, grandchildren and many creatures of nature (except beavers). He was a 
60 year member of the American Legion Post, Isabel, VFW, Pratt and was a 
supporter of the Pratt County Fair.<br>On Jan. 20, 1951 he married Darlene 
Sleeper at Medicine Lodge, she survives.<br>Other survivors include a son Mark 
and wife Linda Kumberg, Pratt; two daughters Connie and husband Jack McCammond, 
Woodruff, South Carolina; Patricia and Randall Samms, Wichita; a sister Beatrice 
Kumberg, Wichita; Grandchildren, Brianna LeBret, Talia Alley, Wesley and Spenser

Broomfield for 45 years, formerly of Medicine Lodge, she was a retired 
Elementary School Teacher. She was a member of The Questers, Broomfield 
Potpourri Doll Club, and TOPS. On December 29, 1962 she married Joseph William 
Vincent at Denver, CO. He died March 19,1987. Survivors include a Step-Son, Gary 
Vincent, Highlands Ranch, CO; 3 Step-Daughters Vicki Vincent, Valencia, CA; 
Maria Vincent, Lawrence, KS; and Naomi Meadows, Loveland, CO; 2 sisters Donna

<a name="miller">Bill Douglas Miller</a>, age 53, died Friday, December 7th at 
the South Wind Hospice Home in Pratt, Kansas. He was born June 6, 1954 in 
Arkansas City, Kansas the son of Bob and Carole (Allen) Miller. <br><br>He was 
baptized in the Methodist Church. The family moved to Lyons in June of 1964 and 
he graduated high school in 1972. He attended schools in Arkansas City, El 
Dorado and Lyons. Bill has been a resident of Medicine Lodge for 20 years, 
working in the oil industry, moving from Lyons in 1986. He was an avid hunter 
and fisherman, starting with his father when he was a young boy. He was also a 
big fan of Nascar.<br><br>He is survived by his parents: Bob &amp; Carole Miller, a

Atwood, Kansas, where Louis worked for the REA, building electric lines in the 
rural areas of NW Kansas. A year later, the family moved to Bird City, Kansas, 
where Louis continued to work for the REA. In 1952, Louis became City 
Superintendent and Lola operated the Double L Cafe. In 1958, the family moved to 
St. Francis, Kansas, where Louis was Electrical Superintendent for the city and 
Lola worked for the newspaper. In 1962, they moved to Longmont, CO, where Lola 
began working as Secretary for Columbine Elementary School, and later worked in 
the School Superintendent’s office before retiring. She loved to read, work 
cross word puzzles, and was a great cook and seamstress. <br><br>Funeral service 
is on Monday, December 10, 2007 at Powhattan United Methodist Church with 
Reverend Priscilla Davies officiating. Interment will follow at Powhattan

Jones. He was a maintenance supervisor for Phillips Pipe Line Co. for 25 years. 
He was a longtime resident of Medicine Lodge.<br><br>He belonged to United 
Methodist Church, Medicine Lodge, Masonic Lodge, and the Shriners.<br><br>On 
Nov. 24, 1955, he married Barbara Osborne in Medicine Lodge. She survives.<br>
<br>Other survivors include: a son, Kent Jones, Seneca, Mo.; a daughter, Tacy 
Beck, Kearney, Mo.; a brother, Wallace Jones, Medicine Lodge; three sisters,

Granville "Granny" Hoover Lewis of Corwin, Kansas was born December 19, 1906 
near Wayside, Kansas the son of James Albert Lewis and Claire Beatrice (Barbour) 
Lewis.. He went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at the 
Southwind Hospice Home in Pratt, Kansas at the age of one hundred. <br><br>He 
worked for Cities Service Natural Gas Co. as a stationary engineer for more than 
forty years. He was also a stockman and farmer.<br><br>Granville was married to 
Virgie Mae Merideth on October 27, 1932 in Miami, Oklahoma. Virgie passed away 
in 1991.<br><br>He was a faithful member of the Corwin Presbyterian Church. He 
was also a member of the Cosmos Lodge #278 in Kiowa for seventy five years.<br>
<br>Preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, three sisters and a 
grandson.<br><br>A loving father and grandfather, Granville is survived by two 
daughters, Barbara Lonker and her husband, Don of Medicine Lodge, Kansas and 
Sherrie Von Lewis of Corwin, Kansas; son, Jim Lewis of Corwin, Kansas; and Irene 
Vanatta of Wichita, who lived with the family thru high school years. He was 
Papa or Grandpa Lewis to six grandchildren: Elizabeth Forsyth and husband, Brad,

GHP, November 26, 2007<br><br>Wilda Lee (Glover) Baker went to be with the Lord 
November 1, 2007 after a long battle with leukemia. She was born October 15, 
1929 in Northbranch, Kansas to Edgar and Verda (Dillon) Glover.<br><br>Wilda 
attended 2 yrs. of college in Haviland, Kansas while corresponding with Orlan 
who was stationed in France. When he returned they were married on June 21, 
1953. They lived in Burr Oak, Kansas where Wilda was a switchboard operator. 
Orlan then took a job in Medicine Lodge where Wilda worked in the meat 
department in Parkers IGA, the local newpaper office and later was an assistant 
in the District Court office before retiring in 1992. She and Orlan were always 
involved in camping clubs in Medicine Lodge and Pratt. They began spending 
summers on Grand Lake in Ok. and then winters in Tx, where they decided to stay 
full time. In 2006 they sold their RV and home in Medicine Lodge and bought a 
mobile home in Paradise Park in Pharr, Tx.<br><br>Wilda is preceded in death by 
her mother Verda, father Edgar and a niece Wanda Kay Glover.<br><br>Wilda is 
survived by her husband Orlan, a son Jay and his wife Kezia of Collinsville, Ok, 
their 3 sons Brandon of Norfolk, Va, Stephon of Denver, Co, and Nathaniel and 
wife Jenny of Norfolk, Va.. Their daughter Doris (Baker) Roland and husband 
Larry of Rogers, Ar, their two sons Gale and wife Kara of Rogers, Ar and Jeremy 
and wife Cheri of Caledonia, Mi., two great-granddaughters Kadey and Alexys 
Roland, a sister Estalene Ferguson of Hutchinson, Ks., a brother LaVae Glover of

Humphrey<br><br>Patsy Ann (Hyter) Humphrey, 85, passed away in Wichita on 
Friday, November 16, 2007. Pat was born on September 29, 1922 at Hutchinson to 
Samuel D. Hyter and Mina Amelia Everley Hyter. Her family moved to Kiowa when 
she was young and her father had purchased the movie theater. She graduated from 
Kiowa High School and attended one semester of college at Hutchinson. <br><br>On 
October 1, 1941 she and James "Bud" Paul Humphrey were united in marriage. She 
attended the Congregational United Church of Christ in Kiowa for a number of 
years and later became a member of the United Methodist Church. She volunteered 
at the church, Kiowa Historical Society, General Store, and helped with Cub 
Scouts. She was the Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star. When she wasn’t working 
as a volunteer she would clean house and take on the role of doctor and nurse 
for her boys. One of her hobbies was to refinish furniture. She enjoyed 
attending all sporting events for her children and grandchildren.<br><br>She was 
preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, Bob Hyter.<br>
<br>She is survived by her four sons, Jim and wife, Sue of Medicine Lodge, Sam 
and wife, Vicki of Kiowa, Kem and wife, Dot of Kiowa, Tad of Winfield; ten 
grandchildren, Tammi and husband, Chad Ohl, Joel Humphrey, Rachel and husband, 
Travis Pape, Emily Humphrey, Angela and husband, Erick Devoy, Kale Humphrey, Liz 
Humphrey, Ann and husband, Berton Walz, Trent and wife, Abby Humphrey, Taylor 
Humphrey; two great grandchildren, Hadley Ohl, Jonas Humphrey, and many friends.<br>

2007 at his home in Medicine Lodge. He was born February 27, 1935 at Anderson, 
Indiana, the son of Claud and Marcella (Davis) Jackson. <br><br>Coming from 
Zenda, he has been a resident of Medicine Lodge since 1977. He was a custodian 
at the Medicine Lodge Middle School for 22 years. He was a US Army Veteran 
having served from 1958-1960.<br><br>On December 1, 1956, he married Shirley Ann 
Alvis in Anderson, Indiana. She died February 28, 1990.<br><br>He is survived by 
his son Mark and Rebecca Jackson, Medicine Lodge; and daughter Mardena Jackson, 
Wichita; a sister GayAnne Simms, Tennessee; 8 grandchildren and 5 great 
grandchildren.<br><br>He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, 
Marlene Adiar.<br><br>The funeral service will be held November 20, 2007 at the 
First Christian Church in Medicine Lodge with Pastor Tom Walters officiating.

Marie Wiscaver</a><br><br>Marie Wiscaver, 91, died November 7, 2007 at 
Wellsville, Kansas. She was born June 14, 1916 in Barber County, the daughter of 
Earl B. and Stella (Shanks) Vaughn. She attended school in Medicine Lodge from 
the first grade until the end of her 1st semester of her senior year, when her 
family moved to Wichita, where she attended North High School and later 
graduated from Bonnie Beauty Academy in Wichita. She was a hairdresser at 
Marie’s Beauty Shop in Medicine Lodge for over 30 years. She was a member of the 
VFW Auxiliary, and the First Christian Church in Grove, OK. In September, 1935, 
she married Everett Reeves. To this union two children were born, Randall D. 
Reeves and Russell B. Reeves. On June 23, 1946, she married 
<a href="../images/kennedy_clay_1b.jpg">Clay Kennedy</a>. They 
made their home in Medicine Lodge until his death in 1969. In 1970 she married 
Edgar C. Wiscaver. They made their home in Mesa, AZ, and Grove, OK, until his 
death in 1982.<br><br>Survivors include 6 grandsons Russell, Michael, Mark, 
Spencer, Randall, and Jesse, and a granddaughter Lacy Matthews.<br><br>She was 
preceded in death by her parents; 3 husbands; two sons Randall and Russell 
Reeves. Two sisters Ruth Vance, and Velma Bates, and a brother Randall Vaughn.<br>

resident of Medicine Lodge, he was currently attending Alva Vocational School to 
become a computer Technician. He was a member of Duck’s Unlimited and Buck 
Masters.<br><br>Survivors include his father John Swinford Sr., Medicine Lodge, 
two sons, Robert Swinford and wife Lea, Pratt; Donald Swinford Jr. and wife 
Stephanie, Enid, OK; a daughter Kateri Young and husband Jesse, Medicine Lodge;

October 25, 2007 at Kaw City, OK along side his brother Donald Swinford, doing 
what he loved best, fishing.<br><br>He was born February 5, 1955 the son of John 
and Christine "Chris" (Alltizer) Swinford Sr.. A resident of Sharon since 1980, 
he was a Rig Supervisor for Clarke Oil. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. On 
February 23, 1973 he married Vivian Lynn Hebensperger at Duncan, OK; she 
survives. <br><br>Other survivors include his father John Swinford Sr., Medicine 
Lodge, a son Jimi Keith Swinford, Medicine Lodge, sisters Barbara Swinford, 
Kellie Winchell, and Linda Kaiser, all of Medicine Lodge.<br><br>He was preceded 
in death by his mother Christine, and a brother Donald Swinford.<br><br>The

He was born December 18, 1929 at &lt;a href="medicinelodge.html"&gt;Medicine 
Lodge&lt;/a&gt;, the son of George R. and Wilma A. (Wells) Peirson. A lifetime 
resident of Medicine Lodge, he worked in the oilfield as a roughneck. He was a 
member of the United Methodist Church, VFW, and American Legion, all in Medicine 
Lodge and the USS Rodchester Association.<br><br>He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and 
served in the Navy from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict.<br><br>On 
December 24, 1952, he married Jeanne Vincent at Medicine Lodge. She died May 31, 
1993. Survivors include two daughters Amy Bower and Tommi Cox, both of Medicine 
Lodge; a brother, Jack Peirson, Medicine Lodge; 6 grandchildren, Jeff Cox, 
Michael Cox, Krista Miller, Lisa Johnson and Jennifer Bower and 7 great 
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers Robert "Bob" Peirson and 
John Peirson, a grandson Jason Bower.<br><br>Graveside Service was held on 
Monday, February 19, 2007 at Highland Cemetery, Medicine Lodge with Pastor Tom

<a name="hoffert">Turelda H. Hoffer</a>, 92, of Bradenton, Florida, died on 
September 29, 2007 at Tidewell Hospice.&lt;P&gt;<br><br>Born on January 1, 1915 in 
California, she was educated at Newton (Kansas) College and obtained her 
certification of Registered Nurse (R.N.) at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend, 
Kansas. She subsequently served the Kansas University Medical Center as head 
nurse in the obstetrics and gynecology department and later served as the office 
nurse for Dr. John Hoffer, M.D., at his medical office quarters at Medicine 
Lodge Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Olin and 
Myron and a sister, Esther.&lt;P&gt;<br><br>She is survived by her husband John G. 
Hoffer, M.D., and a son John G. Hoffer and daughter Virginia Weber and six

Air &amp; Space magazine features some of the wartime photographs of local World War 
II veteran Jim Bertoglio.<br><br>At only 19 years old, Sergeant Bertoglio served 
as a photographer for the 94th Fighter Squadron in Foggia, Italy. The group’s 
twin-engine P-38 Lockheed "Lightning" fighters were charged with escorting 
bombers over the Mediterranean, as well as ground attack missions. Using an old 
German field kitchen that was captured in North Africa, Bertoglio made prints 
that captured the daily operations of the famed "Hat in the Ring" squadron.<br>
<br>"It’s not about me, it’s about them," said Bertoglio, pointing at a group of 
fighters returning from a mission in one of his photos. "They were the heroes. I 
saw the war behind a lense."<br><br>Still, Bertoglio had a couple of 
hair-raising experiences. When his squadron was being transferred to a different 
base, Bertoglio was accidentally left behind. A B-17 bomber that was en-route to 
the base was then scheduled to make a stop to pick him up.<br><br>As Bertoglio 
waited with his bags below the control tower, the plane’s pilot radioed that he 
was overloaded and did not want to make the landing. Reluctantly, the crew at 
the airbase fired up their war-weary B-17—which was normally used to pick up 
liquor from Cairo once a month.<br><br>When Bertoglio arrived at his 
destination, he saw the smoldering wreckage of the plane that he was supposed to 
be on. Due to a pilot error, the plane had crashed, killing all 17 on board.<br>
<br>Upon seeing the wreckage, Bertoglio said his "knees went out from under 
him." When he gathered his composure, he snapped a photo—the only crash photo he 
took during the war.<br><br>On another occasion, Bertoglio had been asking one 
of the pilots to take him up for a ride. The pilot woke him up one morning and 
told him to come along. Bertoglio climbed into the cramped cockpit of the P-38, 
which was normally a single-seat aircraft. Bertoglio sat behind the pilot, in 
the spot that was normally filled with the plane’s radio equipment.<br><br>Much 
to Bertoglio’s surprise, the pilot headed out over the ocean, dropping the 
altitude close to the water. Bertoglio looked out and saw that the plane’s 
propellers were stirring up whitecaps below. He frantically motioned over the 
pilot’s shoulder, begging him to pull up to a higher altitude. Despite the roar 
of the engines, the pilot managed to tell Bertoglio that he couldn’t pull up or 
the plane would be detected by German radar.<br><br>The "ride" that Bertoglio 
was promised had turned out to be a secret mission. After approaching land, the 
pilot quickly set the plane down on a grass landing strip. Bertoglio saw a group 
of British Hurricane fighters that were being operated by Yugoslavian pilots. A 
British officer greeted the P-38 pilot who had brought him a briefcase. 
Bertoglio jumped out of the plane and came eye to eye with female resistance 
fighter armed with a machine gun and grenades, who was apparently not too 
pleased that the pilot had brought company. At the pilot’s advice, Bertoglio sat 
on the wing of the P-38 and didn’t move.<br><br>After the pilot and British 
officer disappeared into a small hut, the woman with the machine gun stood 
staring at Bertoglio for what must have seemed an eternity. He was relieved when 
the pilot returned and it was time to leave.<br><br>"We he came out, I could 
have kissed him," said Bertoglio.<br><br>Bertoglio’s wartime photos have 
appeared in numerous publications and exhibits. Some of the prints are also on 
display at the State Legislature in Topeka.<br><br>
