BARBER COUNTY'S FIRST WEDDING WAS IN 1873

John H. Garten and Malinda Lou Rogers were married at Sun City, Kansas, 1873 in the presence of sixty cowboys.

The first wedding in Barber County took place at Sun City on December 31, 1873, when Malinda Rogers became the wife of John H. Garten. The ceremony was performed by John Marshall and assisted by N. Vontrees, a lawyer, in the presence of about sixty wedding guests composed of cowboys and hunters attracted to the occasion as it was heralded as the first wedding in the county.

The log building owned by Major Robin, in which the ceremony was performed, was crowded and jammed with the interested spectators, who were undoubtedly reminded of tender memories of dear ones back east.

John H. Garten was born in Monroe County, West Virginia, March 23, 1848, and Mrs. Garten was born in Braxton County, West Virginia on April 14, 1853. Both came to Barber County, meeting each other here.

Since their marriage, they have continued to make Barber County their home, with the exception of five years following the opening of the Cherokee Strip spent in improving up a claim in that section.

In Sun City where they are enjoying old age surrounded by their children and grandchildren, friends and neighbors.

They are looking forward to many more years of delightful companionship and enjoyment of the rewards that come to those who have spent their life in conquering the frontier and in hewing out a home in which to rear a family.

Truly John and Malinda Garten are living examples of empire builders to whom this country owes a debt of gratitude.

The Index extends congratulations and wishes them many more years of happiness.
